Our Editor in Chief pro tempore, Jack Baruth, was injured an automobile collision near Columbus Saturday. His injuries were serious but he is expected to make a full recovery. Last night, Jack posted the following to his Facebook page:
This is Rumor Control. Involved in 40mph offset today on rural road. Wasn’t speeding, the other car wasn’t speeding, we just hit some ice. My son’s fine. My partner is in the proverbial dire straits. I had spleen surgery and I’ve broken the stuff I broke in 1988 — minus the neck.
In the meantime, all of his colleagues are keeping him in our thoughts and prayers, wishing for him to have a recovery as speedy as he is on the track.
Once again, Jack, all of us wish you a return to full health as soon as possible.

Jack posted a short while ago that his passenger was injured but taken to a different medical facility where she’s had surgery and is now in stable condition.

Jack: I pray that you and everyone involved can heal quickly and without permanent consequences.
Ironically, my son was just recently involved in TWO accidents, separated by a week: one with a company car; the other with his Mazda 5. (Slow-speed driving in each. He’s OK; the cars are not.)
But the cause? ICE! He said, “Everything was going OK, but then in each case, the car just kind of ‘took off’, and I didn’t do anything unusual…”

There’s always a silver lining and in this case it’s that at least one of Jack’s hideously ugly wheels was taken out. Maybe this will lead him to get four new ones with a bit more class.
That said, I wish the best to Jack, his loved ones and the occupants of the other car. We often get so involved in “the net” that we forget there are actual people on the keyboards typing what we read. Things like this help to remind us.

Best of Luck to you and yours…I just returned from a 2000 mile trip, in a Mercedes Sprinter of all things, from NY to WI. I’ve never seen so many vehicles off the road and/or upside down. It was a tough ride in a big storm. No matter how good, careful or equipped the driver, black ice gives no quarter.
the midwest weather has been brutal these past few weeks, indeed! glad to hear jack and his son are ok, hoping to hear good news about his passenger as well.
even those who’ve been through a lot of bad winters up there are feeling this one, and the cold snap coming tonight will only make it worse.

Get well soon Jack, and all others involved. I really feel with you, since I almost had a 50mph+ head to head collision on the 30th of november,with my gf and our three kids in the car.
I tried to sverve and had the other car rip my front wheel off and destroy the whole drivers side of the car instead. We were lucky and got out mostly unharmed, except for my gf still having sore ribs from the seatbelt. The other driver suffered small bruises and cuts to his face. Cars were totalled though.

Really unfortunate news, especially bad start for the new year. Mend quickly, Jack, and friend.
Vacationing up at The Farm for a couple of weeks and took a trip into town several days ago. We waited until late morning so the roads would clear of ice, but the forest shadowed areas(always on the sharp curves) were still icy, and despite going very slowly, still had to catch the rig in a few spots.
Doesn’t matter if you have 4WD and Posi front and rear with studs all around, it can get hairy when on a steep down hill turns at any speed. Thrown in the usual high camber roads, and it is doubly so.
The time of year to be especially cautious, no matter your equipment or wheel skills.

Yes, I was wondering (though it’s not necessarily important), which car they were in.
@Lorenzo: Lots of race drivers are nervous about driving on public roads. They also tend to obey speed limits to a fare-thee-well, and drive cars you might not associate with them–big, soft-riding cars and the like, instead of sports cars.
Yup about the race car drivers. I remember reading an in depth interview and ride along with Jackie Stewart in Car and Driver, well over 25 years ago. He drove a Ford Taurus and scrupulously obeyed the speed limit.
I don’t know if it’s because they get it out of their system on the track, or being around nonprofessional drivers freaks them out. Or both.

I was asking because one very unhappy thing I experienced with an LSD on a ’72 Oldsmobile, on slippery roads at speed, was a dangerous fish-tailing back and forth, as first one rear wheel engaged more solidly with better traction, and then the other. It was almost as though the LSD produced a side-thrust in first one direction then the other.
Yes, these traction-assisting devices help in starting up in snow and ice, but I had never experienced the at-speed instability effect with an open differential. The low-traction wheel would just spin a bit, alternating the spinning wheel from one side to the other, but the car would not change course.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I’ve heard that a vehicle with an LSD will “dog-track” if the wheels are spinning while climbing a hill, so I think it would be rather unsettling if the back end started to go to the side while moving at a good clip.
But not stability control, which given the news report might have been a huge help.

Is it wrong for me to say if the Town Car is totaled I look forward to the articles generated by his search for something to replace it? Jack’s not the kind of guy who usually owns the same thing over and over…
Maybe not ‘wrong’ but possibly a bit early.
As I’ve just been through the same thing, I can tell you that when looking for a replacement car, ‘I want something lightweight and nimble’ is suddenly (at least unconsciously) replaced by ‘how many airbags does this come with?’
It kind of changes the way you think about, well, everything doesn’t it?
I know that after my 60MPH shunt and spin into a Jersey barrier, I knew I’d never daily-drive any of the tiny old Japanese cars I’d pondered in the past – at least not extending to proper highway trips. A Volvo 240 isn’t exactly modern technology, but it’s got enough sensibility and overkill baked into it to hold up well enough. I walked away, ended up with a Saab NG900, and am currently selling it for… another 240.
Every accident’s different, and I have no illusion that I wouldn’t be safer in a ten-year-old Accord, but I like old cars, and I like knowing that by the standards of the era (two to three decades ago), I’m quite safe – and that I’m still likely to walk again if I get into any kind of survivable accident.

I shouldn’t really speculate, but if he had been driving a Camry, he might not have had the accident. With a Lincoln, combine RWD with (presumably) all-season tires and ice, and even a driver as highly-skilled as Mr Baruth can spin out. To quote the man himself:

“It’s the front-engined, FWD car that has the most predictable emergency handling and the quickest return to stability.”

This is terrible news. I wish Jack had taken his own advice on drive configuration, along with some good winter tires. I just can’t relax driving a RWD on slippery or potentially slippery highways, despite plenty of experience driving RWD growing up. Give me FWD or a well-sorted AWD on good studded tires and I’ll set the cruise and calmly sip my coffee.
I might have wondered how such an apparently skilled driver could lose control had I not just driven my buddy’s 3/4-ton Dodge 150 miles on changeable winter highway conditions along with a brutal cross-wind last weekend. Some of it was icy enough to just throw it in 4WD and set the cruise, but much of it was clear so I had to leave it in RWD but be very alert and careful that the thing doesn’t try to swap ends on an icy patch. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve felt that tense on a highway drive. I normally enjoy slippery roads and the feeling of the car dancing around beneath me. I did the whole trip at the 70 mph speed limit like I would with my own car but thinking back I should have just kept it at 55 or so. It just didn’t feel safe, and that was on studded winter tires. But the heater wasn’t working well and I was in a bit of a bad mood so I had no patience for that.
This news is a reminder of the caution that even a skilled driver needs to exercise, and that caution should begin with the choice of equipment.

I had assumed from the side impact that a loss of stability played a part here. I suppose it’s possible the car just understeered across the opposite lane, though I’d expect that to be more of a frontal impact, which probably would have been better for everyone involved, and certainly for Jack and his passengers. I’m sure we’ll hear the details eventually. I apologize if any of my assumptions are incorrect.
Looked at the link someone posted in the comment. It was his Town Car (he said it was a 2009, and the accident report said it was a 2009 too) that got totaled. And a pre-refresh 2006-2010 Sonata was involved too.

Somewhat disturbing, it lists four of the people injured with “non-incapacitating injuries”. For his passenger, Michelle, it just says she was transported by Medflight. Presumably her injuries are more serious.
That’s terrible news. We all will be hoping for Jack’s full recovery, as his companions, too. He truly has saved this site from the doldrums, and is making waves in the print press, too.

Man I hate to read this news. Ice and moose are the scariest road hazards. I hope everyone (including the other cars’ occupants) makes a speedy recovery without a lot of stress. A wreck like this is no joke. What a relief that Jack’s son is OK.

You can drive the road on ‘G-maps. West bound you have a maybe 30-35 degree left turn that goes immediately into about a 30-35 degree right turn. Only turns on the road as it is mostly straight for a ways in either direction.
Incident probably started with the entry into the right turn, but that doesn’t explain the right side hit unless the car spun 270* plus or spun exiting the left turn, but that would have put the cars in front of the auto recyclers and not down the road past the right hand corner exit. Jack’s vehicle could have just slide across the center line in front of the other vehicle exposing the passenger side to the contact.
The Lincoln took a big hit in the ‘A’ post to ‘B’ post area, from the right side front corner of the Hyundai with no clear sign that I can see of airbag deployment. It may have also had contact with a pole.
Front passenger took the brunt of this unfortunate incident and was life flighted. Hoping it is not as bad for her as it appears, as her injuries could be quite severe.
Good thing the little Buddy came through with out physical injuries.
Hoping for the best for everybody in the Hyundai, and Jack and friend of what was a very serious accident.

I was looking for the airbags in the Town Car, but couldn’t see them in the pictures; the one close-up of the Hyundai’s driver-side shows the two front bags. Odd, since it looks like the front of Jack’s car took enough of a hit to trip a sensor.
In the first pic in the story (top to bottom) you can clearly see the drivers seat and dash – the airbag is not deployed in the steering wheel on the Lincoln.
The 6th picture down of the Hyundai shows the airbags in the front did deploy.
This was a nasty crash – and it appears that Jack’s partner took the brunt of the crash.
If the front end damage is from post side-impact into the pole or other contact, the speed probably wasn’t fast enough for a secondary impact deployment – and looking at the damage, front airbags probably wouldn’t have helped minimize much.
Airbags are deployed when the car’s accelerometer data shows that dangerous deceleration is occurring along some axis AND that a particular airbag is positioned such that it can help mitigate the situation.
An airbag deployment is violent and dangerous. You don’t want it to happen unless it is absolutely necessary. If the steering wheel airbag didn’t deploy, that’s a very good thing…
Unless there was a malfunction, but the car’s black box should have the data to prove one way or the other. In college, I lead a team that created a software package for a GM supplier that allowed engineers to better test the interactions between all those components and made sure the correct action was taken. They took it very seriously – years of testing hundreds of scenarios per week. An airbag malfunction would be exceedingly unusual.
This year and model Lincoln has side airbags, did they deploy? None of links to the story are working, so I can’t look
No side curtains though.

I recall that in his “Rentin The Blues” article Jack indicated the Lincoln Town Car was “a nightmare to drive in icy 2 lane roads, requiring frequent violent steering corrections” and in “The Panther In Winter” he described it as “treacherous” on cold roads. Of course, on black ice all cars will perform like this.

News of Jack’s accident this morning certainly depressed me, to say the least.
Here’s hoping to a speedy recovery to all involved. Jack – looking forward to more of your excellent and poignant pieces once you’re back to 100% – they get me through the drab workdays. You’ve come a long way since the ‘Phaeton at 100mph’ piece that riled up more than a few feathers.

Kickstarter for a replacement Town Car?
I’m pulling for a end of production Northstar equipped DTS or Lucerne just to see if they finally fixed the Northstar. Plus Baruth will actually make that bastard rev into the high ranges were it sound sweet unlike the elderly clientele that the car originally had.
A bad start to 2014 – hope it goes better from here and everyone makes a full recovery.

So sorry to hear about the crash. Thoughts and prayers to you and your loved ones, and I’m very glad your son is fine.
I’m glad Jack was out and about in that weather in the Panther as it likely saved them from a horribly worse outcome. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jack and his injured passenger. I hope we get positive news soon. Any accident that requires cutting up the frame of a big panther is a serious crash indeed.
I just read this article and followed the links after working through the weekend. The cabin intrusion is bad sign. I hope all involved do well and that Jack’s friend got Level 1 care. She will need it. Other than my patients and people at church, this is the first time I prayed for a total stranger.
