It’s been an important part of who knows how many stunt-filled car movies: the jump over the car carrier. Now, thanks to alcohol, we know how it would work in real life.
The official report is surprisingly free of words like “bad-ass” and “awesome” but some news stories on the incident do contain the word “impaired”. This is pretty much how I always figured a jump over a car hauler would work. Unlike bicycle or motorcycle stunt jumping, the rotation of a car that’s doing a big jump is set entirely by the conditions of launch and can’t be changed by the actions of the driver post-launch. We can chalk this one up as another case of unibody SUVs being surprisingly safe. I mean, can you imagine making a jump like this in a BOF SUV? Don’t worry, I won’t make you imagine it.
I guess that, as soul singer Keith Sweat would say, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it.
Looks like somebody was playing Grand Theft Auto V too much….
He didn’t use the control stick to land it properly.
“up up down down left right left right B A start”
His judgement may have been impaired but he lined that up really well.
Thanks for posting that video with the commentary. I learned two new words!

We’ve all wanted to catch some air by jumping one of those truck ramps. Too bad, in reality, your engine’s mass causes the car to land like a lawn dart rather than a gliber.
Too bad neither your suspension- nor spine- can survive the ordeal.
the c8 will surely and finally be mid engine so at least it will fly well. ;-)
No, no we haven’t.
Its a Jeep thing,you wouldn’t understand.
Wonder if it had one of those “If you can read this roll me over” stickers on it……..
You mean that doesn’t work in real life? Who woulda thunk it? I do it all the time in Driver: San Francisco!
That is a crap game. The way the cars redline all gears (in automatics) rather than drive normally is obnoxious. I doubt a DeVille at 45mph is at 6000 RPM.
How would you handle the problem, taking into consideration that the gas pedal control isn’t analog and the driving situations aren’t designed for WOT?
The FAIL was not letting off the gas before hitting the jump and then flooring it right before you hit the incline and through the incline.
That would have flattened out his vehicle in the air and kept his ass end down. Pretty sure the Explorer in the second vehicle knew what he was doing.
I learned this at 12 years old jumping my go-cart.
Obviously the Explorer driver is a graduate of the Bo Duke Academy of Automotive Aerobatics, while the Jeep driver took the less-prestigious Rosco P. Coltrane correspondence course.
“Ooo, Flash! That was a horrendous crash!”
Looks to me like his wheels caught the cab of the truck which certainly helped to flip him forward.
I agree. The truck driver is definitely to blame for the bad landing by leaving the ramp at a too shallow angle.
Hold mah beer and watch dis
Winning!
I would like to commend the video takers for at least stopping, i will just imagine that they actually tried to help.
