Last year, my pals at Third Rock Events threw a brilliant rooftop party in Charlotte, NC for about five hundred of their closest friends. Even constant rain didn’t stop the show. I’m still trying to figure out how I went back to the hotel alone from that one; the women were all gorgeous and highly inebriated. Oh yeah, I remember now: because Bark made me stick around to help clean up.
Good news: the party’s on again this year. $40 for unlimited food, beer and vodka. Our own Caroline Ellis will be working as a hospitality girl. So, you know, be hospitable to her. @April – I guess it’s always been that way. For us, cars take the place of drugs. OK, drugs occasionally, but the 2 don’t go together. Beer mostly. Different mindsets. But the sexism and Rock-n-roll are the constants. And the women folk are always welcome, out back in the garage, but they can’t expect us to clean up the sexist banter and remove the sexy posters of scantly clad or naked women just because they join the party. I’ve been around crowds of people who are drinking, and it’s not pleasant. They’re all fake, loud, loopy, and annoying. Health class and my mother have told me drinking is bad; don’t do it.

Let’s be honest here. As nice as the “good heart” part sounds people don’t change their orientation because of a good heart. I worked with a brilliant engineer that also happened to be transgender. I could always count on her for solid design advice. Bigotry can hold you back in life. I have a lot of friends in the LGBT community and my life is better for having known them.

I think if you manage it well, drinking adds a certain color to life that is missing for those who abstain completely. It’s a fine social lubricant when used in moderation. I imagine half of us wouldn’t be here if not for alcohol.

Thus, those who use them are insulting me. After all, most of you haven’t had to deal with the kind of bullshit I’ve dealt with in the past, from simple misgendering, to threats of rape and/or murder. Those slurs are just the hideous masks worn while whispers behind my back and chants of “faggot” to my face — and worse — make their presence felt.
Hell, one time, I got into a fight with an individual because of bullshit like that. Lost a camera, a few drops of blood, and the guy was eventually arrested. Alas, he didn’t bleed like me; I’m not exactly a fighter.

My life is much richer and fuller having friends and customers from all over the gender spectrum, as well as many friends who are different colours, different races and different religions.

Hey Cameron, I rarely comment but I just wanted to say that I love your articles on TTAC and I think you’re a refreshing change from a lot of the clickbait that is posted on here. You’re a great writer and you seem like a damn fine person. This is coming from a 100% straight hetero male from rural NC. As with some of the other things I’ve said on here, I should’ve kept the whole last part of my comment to myself. Though I don’t know if I know any transgender people in person, if I did, I’d still treat them the same as I do now. After I posted that comment, I was continually thinking about going back on my computer and requesting for it to be deleted, because I knew it was a dumb mistake on my part. While some of my views are extreme, I should just keep my mouth shut in the future
So, this thread has been my big lesson about being careful online, as I was thinking “Wow, I’ve said stuff on an automotive community where I’m close to no one that those who are closest to me don’t know about”. And here’s a sterling example of Mr. Kills’ point! It’s all “Hatred!” and “Bigotry!” from the alternative crowd, but what are Slow Kills and I really doing? Are we demanding the lifestyle go away? Are we yelling about how terrible it is? Are we objecting to anyone’s participation in it? NO! All we’re doing is questioning the constant moving of goal posts around what a slur is and what is offensive.
The gay/alternative lifestyle community would love nothing more than making whole-heartedly embracing everything that is gay or crossgendered or whatever other weird stuff they dream up to be deemed “hateful bigotry” but that’s not how it works. When you are TRULY oppressed, sound the alarm, but when a couple people simply object to having to avoid yet another word because it hurts someone somewhere’s feelings, that’s not hateful bigotry, no matter how loudly you whine and cry about it.

You are right that the goalposts have moved. When I grew up in the 70’s, my father turned into a fountain of racist epithets whenever he drove, and no one minded. Terms like African-American didn’t exist.
Bullies constantly used slurs for gays or Asian-Americans to insult people, and typically got away with it. And the football team in Washington didn’t think twice about its name.
When I went to college, no one really seemed to care that a bunch of gays and heroine addicts were dropping dead from the strangest diseases, certainly not enough to devote meaningful research dollars to stopping HIV/AIDS.
Today, we are a more evolved society, and we will continue to evolve. A part of that is moving past vocabulary that is hurtful and incites violence.
So my ask is that we get past all the name-calling and focus on cars.

What does it cost you to be tolerant and accept LGBT folk as equal? Or to accept marriage equality? Or to be friendly and welcoming to a person of colour? Zero. That’s the cost. Absolutely nothing. Nobody is asking you to sleep with, marry or go into business with a LGBT person – all they ask is to be considered equal, as guaranteed under the Constitution.

The gender spectrum is like the colour spectrum in that there’s millions of gradations, not absolute black and white. Just taking a second to reply to the question of why I have not replied: it’s because I have been doing other things.
It’s amazing how we managed to turn a harmless post about a charity gig into a social discussion about gender identity. As a musician and artist, I come into contact with people of all colors, shapes, sizes, genders, etc. I have performed on stage in front of thousands of people with heterosexual and homosexuals alike, transgendered individuals…the music supersedes all of that.
While I don’t think a automotive website is the place for such discussion, I am glad that it has given Cameron the chance to speak about her identity.

@S2K Chris. There are times when some trans folks will go public and share their story. They are not trying to “cram it down everyone’s throats”. It is for education and advocacy.
Of the trans brothers and sisters I know, they try to go about their lives with minimum drama. The goal is to blend in and not stick out. BTW, for most of us the only agenda we have is finding a decent job, a safe place to live. Maybe find a nice person to love and to be our authentic selves.

It’s an article where I can go thousands of miles out of my way to have fun, and meet women. Some of these women, apparently, are tall.

– you are regularly insulted for living your life as you see fit, when you do nothing to bother others
– you face discrimination in the work environment on a regular basis
– you frequently are subject to degradation and threats of violence, just for being who you are
– people just like you are beaten and even killed without cause
– churches teach congregants to hate you
– posters on a website focused on cars populate the message board with slurs, insults and threats of incarceration, and then act entitled and whine for an apology
