One of the bloodiest battlegrounds in the electric car wars is the topic of government subsidies for EV purchases. In the American case, it’s the $7500 federal tax credit for EVs and the various state incentives including California’s current $2500 rebate. In Europe and Asia, a variety of EV promotion schemes have frequently been the subject of acrimonious debate.  Much of the disagreement arises regarding the perceived “fairness” of rebates: defenders of subsidies generally claim that they help put EVs in the hands of middle-class consumers, with critics charging that they only serve to line the pockets of the wealthy. Now one California lawmaker wants to revamp the state’s subsidy program by capping the income level for households receiving EV rebates.

By Louisa Ortiz (Junior, Ketchikan Alaska) and Mike Smitka (the Prof, Detroit Michigan and Lexington Virginia) edited from her post of May 11th, 2014 in Economics 244 (link here). This is the latest in a series of (edited) posts by my students, many of whom got into blogging and all of whom performed well in a class that while on the road or with a visiting speaker could begin with an 8 am departure and not end until a 10 pm return. Kudos to them!

Disclaimer: we have no particular knowledge of these EOBR services; they were chosen for their decorative value.

Truck accidents can be horrific, and Washington and Lee is just off I-81, which has some of the highest density truck traffic in the country. My son was forced off the road while commuting to school – with a police car there to witness it. A Japanese tourist passing through the county was less lucky, rear-ended by a truck as he tried to merge. His wife in the rear seat didn’t have her seat belt on (typical in Japan), and was thrown from the vehicle, dying later that evening. (I was called in as an interpreter, small town networks being what they are.)

In many ways it was the quintessential accident, a chain of chance events. The truck driver was under lots of pressure. Driving big trucks was the only profession he’d ever had. He’d never had an accident, indeed he’d never had a ticket, but the Canadian company that employed him was in bankruptcy. He’d driven more than the legal number of hours; likely he’d dozed off. The driver of the car was lost, and it was getting dark. Again, there happened to be a policeman there who saw the accident; he claimed the car was traveling at a normal speed, but I got to know the driver and suspect he was likely going closer to 35 mph, not 55+ mph. Oh, and before I forget, the driver and the daughter who was traveling with them both had their seatbelts on and were uninjured: buckle up!

Oh, GM, you so cray-cray. You’ve done it again. If the 2010 Buick LaCrosse was the ’84 Fiero 2M4 of entry luxury sedans — all the right ideas executed indifferently — this 2015 model is the ’89 GT V6 of entry luxury sedans. All the right ideas, executed well enough to get the attention of […]

11 - 1974 Datsun B210 Down On the Junkyard - Picture courtesy of Murilee MartinI’ve seen a few B210s during my junkyard travels since we had this ’75 hatchback and this ’78 coupe in this series back in 2012, but most of the time I don’t find them sufficiently interesting to photograph. A bewilderingly labeled 210 or 310 or B310 or whatever it was that Nissan called their American Sunny for several months in the late 1970s, sure, I’ll shoot that. I overlook these cars, I must admit, because I came of driving age in the early 1980s, when these cars (and early Colts, and Pintos, and Vegas) were the bottom-of-the-barrel misery boxes that young people bought for $150 and loathed driving— let’s call them the Ford Tempos and Chevy Berettas of the Late Malaise Era. This B210 looked so old, sitting in the snow among the Camrys and Volvo 940s at my local Denver yard last winter, that I decided to add it to this series. Enjoy. (Read More…)

To ignore the fact that auto reviewers head into a review with preconceived notions is to forget that we’re humans, not robots. A car review isn’t a specifications chart, it’s language, however artfully (or not artfully, in this case) penned. I don’t decide in advance to dislike a car. Indeed, as often as not, the […]

Elon Musk + Akio Toyoda

Just four years ago, Tesla and Toyota entered into a relationship where the former would supply battery packs for the latter’s RAV4 EV. In turn, Toyota invested $50 million in Tesla, and sold the NUMMI facility — which Toyota once shared with General Motors — for $42 million. Things have changed, in the sage words of Bob Dylan.

Though peak oil usually refers to when production reaches the highest point it’ll ever see before coasting back down to the same level once experienced in the 1800s, a new report reveals a different oil peak will come in the next few years: the total product consumed worldwide.

rental-car-signs

2014 has been a good year for the rental car industry. A recovering economy has meant more car rentals and more miles traveled by consumers. Volume alone isn’t responsible for the rental companies’ recent success, though. Each of the big three rental chains has been able to raise prices, thanks to the consolidation of an industry that they now collectively control 98% of.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe silverU.S. sales of General Motors passenger cars slid 3.8% in July 2014. This 3348-unit loss was created in large part by the Chevrolet Cruze’s 4521-unit decline and the Impala’s 3279-unit slide, decreases which were not completely offset by smaller gains from the Malibu, Sonic, Camaro, Corvette, and Buick’s LaCrosse.

Despite a 5.5% boost in July volume from the GMC Sierra, GM pickup truck sales slid 1.6% as Silverado volume remained level and the company lost 1907 pickup sales from nameplates which are either defunct or have not yet returned.

Yet overall GM sales grew at pace with the market’s fast 9% clip in July. How?

Commercial vans, that’s how.

Yes, really.

But only in part. (Read More…)

07 - 1966 Toyota Crown Station Wagon Down On the JunkyardI spent a week in Sweden back in June, and I’m only now getting caught up on the photos I shot of interesting machinery at the Bloms Bilskrot yard, located in Söråker. We saw this ’63 Ford Taunus 17M a while back, there was this straight-outta-1978-San Diego customized ’69 Econoline van, and now we’re going to admire one of the earliest Toyotas sold in Europe.
