Ah, the joys of forbidden fruit. Shortly after the leaked photos of the new C63 AMG were revealed, the official pics and specs were released – along with a tasty two-box treat.
The wagon bodystyle will, of course, not be offered in America. All-wheel drive doesn’t appear to be in the cards either, unlike recent AMG offerings. Unlike the BMW M3, the C63 will retain its V8 configuration, though no manual gearbox will be offered.

“Unlike the BMW M3, the C63 will retain its V8 configuration, though no manual gearbox will be offered.”
Points:
* I don’t think there was a manual with the last several AMG C-Classes. I don’t recall it being an option on the C43, and I’m not sure about the C32
* The M3 was only a V8 for the E90-based iteration. It’s been an I6 most of it’s life; the V8 was a blip.
Points:
* I’m aware, merely highlighting packaging differences in the latest generation of German sports sedans (err, wagons/coupes)
* I’m also aware, see point #1
Is this pedantry really necessary?
This is the internet. Of course pedantry is necessary. So is snark, snottiness, and general misanthropy.
Greater Internet F*ckwad Theory and all that.
No, it’s not necessary. Please refrain from it in the future.
If we were really being pedantic, the ‘real’ M3s were 4 cylinder cars, the ones with 6 cylinders were just posers…
That’s actually a good point: what would you consider a “real” or “best” M3? I hadn’t really thought about the E30.
I always thought the E46 was the “best” M3 but that might be bias slipping in.
The E30 is by far the prettiest of the bunch. Perhaps the best looking “designed with some eye to practicality” car ever made.
The E36 engine is much nicer, though. And the car was faster and smoother (Spoiled rotten college roommate from Canuckistan traded E30 for E36 before senior year…)
The E36 is more of a modern car. Efficient, well engineered, more obviously a descendant of the E46.
The E30 is much more lively at sane speeds. A hopped up 2002. It has the charms of a classic sports car. Less engineered, more tuned. For non geezers, the E30 is the Miata to the E36’s Toyobaru. Or the FiST to the GTI.
Heh, I bought an FR-S because I couldn’t find a decent e30 M3 for under $15k. I figured if I was dropping that sort of cash, I wanted something that I could put 10k miles a year.
I believe all AMGs since they became an official Benz trimline in the mid-90’s have been automatic – certainly, all North American-spec W202s were automatic only.
This C Class wagon is too sexy. Too effing sexy. But I’m guessing a plug in hybrid version with a ~40 mile range on a charge and 0-60 in under 7 seconds is a pipe dream at any price.
It’s not a pipe dream at all, it comes out next year. Americans will only be allowed to buy the sedan version though.
What is this, Jalopnik? Next I’ll hear that Elon Musk built the first ever electric car. And why wouldn’t they do AWD for the wagon which is made for practicality than the sedan. WTF?
I would personally not combine “practicality” and “AMG” (let alone “*63 AMG”) in a sentence.
I mean, I wouldn’t turn one down (especially an E63), but … AMGs are not “practical” in any normal sense of the word.
A wagon is inherently more practical than a sedan. Just because it has some badging and large engine, doesn’t make it unpractical.
First, the word is “impractical” and second, when the wagon in question gets about 12mpg, yeah, it’s that word.
Doesn’t mean I don’t want one, in non-neckbeard sedan spec, of course.
My 1999 C43 works very well in all situations;especially stop lights.
Ooh, ooh, I’ll buy one, but only if it’s brown, has a manual transmission, and is a two door.
Just thought I’d add another condition to that unobtainable wagon.
I’d still prefer the AMG CLS Shooting Brake
Mercedes has determined that speed and practicality is not a good mix for America. The only thing i wold change is that giant logo in front of all their cars. The proportions are almost cartoonish.
Amen!
Ah, the ‘forbidden fruit’, I feel so sorry for you poor americans that can’t buy an incredibly expensive Merc that almost no one in Europe can afford anyways.
All you guys can get, is a ‘dirt cheap’ 707 horsepower ‘unmarked police cruiser’…you poor poor people
(yeah, I’m sarcastic, yeah, I’m jealous…and technically, if I sell the house I can almost afford the import and registration tax on a Hellcat, but, still…)
Hey, we can still get the E63.
I don’t even understand the C63 Wagon when there’s an E63 – how segmented *is* the market for insanely overpowered superexpensive station wagons, that they need TWO OF THEM?
@Sigvald
There are about 7 different BMW 3-series bodies if you count the 4’s and X’s. That’s how segmented european car industry has become…
I’m not sure that this is forbidden fruit here as much as it is unwanted. Personally, I think you’d need to have a goofy amount of money before you’d buy any of the prestige brands, as the mainstream brands are a much better value.
Yay! We can get 707 horsepower! All the better to get from 0 to a maximum of 60mph on our long straight highways. Woo!
Man, saving that 4 seconds of acceleration over a normal car is so worth our otherwise crappy car market.
I don’t trust a man who can’t appreciate the Hellcat. Person like that is probably gay or French or something. Or both.
Well, I do live in Quebec so…
But my point: I do appreciate the ridiculousness of the Hellcat, and I liked the 300C I drove.
I just think its silly to pine over such a vehicle when you are faced with the wealth of choice the European market provides.
I don’t think the Euro market offers a single thing I can’t find a replacement for here that’s comparable or better. But I don’t pine for tiny fuel-sipping diesel rubbish.
The European market offers a lot of very very good looking design studies with dashboard that are oooh so touchy feely and nice, and diesels that can go to the moon and back on half a tank.
But, they no longer offer one single large (roomy) cheap comfortable car with a reasonable amount of power that drives through the correct wheels…
Here in Europe crossovers are more and more popular because grown people and child seats can actually fit in them…unlike most brown diesel stationwagons.
I’m not talking about “fuel-sipping diesel rubbish” (God, really?) I’m talking about cars that are desirable to me (i.e, smaller, refined, fast, fun) and available in a much wider array of powertrain options, form factors, interior and trims fittings, etc.
The same car in the states is limited drastically on the availability and customizability of all of these characteristics, and that alone drives me crazy.
I’ve lived in both markets, and I know what I prefer. A Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4 4-Cylinder is not preferable to a Honda CR-V EX-L 2.2di 6-speed (with available xenons, vastly superior looking rim options, etc.).
Oh,I understand. There just aren’t any reasonably priced ‘basic’ cars available anymore, especially now that Opel and Ford has tried to move ‘upmarket’. I wish we could get cars like the US Accord or even Crosstour over here, even if they wouldn’t be able to sell more than a couple of dozen each year…
(Grass is always greener…)
:P
The only man I know with an SRT-8 Charger happens to be gay.
Well of course, he understands the importance of a good push in the rear.
Dude, I’m just saying, move east.
A Mercedes E 63 sedan in Sweden, including all taxes and charges but base price, a mind boggling 158 881 American dollars.
Crazy! But in Norway that would be a bargain, an E 63 will actually run you 299 967 American dollars, a Chevrolet Captiva 79 grand,
Lol, seriously considering it from time to time, but unemployment figures and monthly pay in Sweden sadly doesn’t match ours at all. There are many Swedes working here though, those poor unempolyed b**tards come here with their nice overpowered luxury cars, hoping to make a living…
It doesn’t bother me that much, because I do prefer older cars, and the prices doesn’t vary that much once a car turns 30 or more, + parts cost the same on Ebay wherever you live.
(PS, my CRV with it’s ‘massive’ 150 hp R20 engine cost me 34K last december, and it’s an ’07 with 60.000 miles on it, the new one starts at 60K)
Yeah, the trick is to cram as many people as you can in an as small as possible apartment and make sure that you walk the line in a way that makes sure that you pay the reduced tax rate. Then it’s all good as a Swede in Norway even though it’s the last Soviet state. ;)
‘almost no one’? I see them driving through Frankfurt all the time…
Jesus, now we’re going to have to read 1000000000000000 internet posts from neckbeards who couldn’t finance a cheesy gordita crunch if it required 10% down claim they’d buy a C63 wagon “if only the idiot sheeple would buy them in America instead of CUVs so I could get one”. Meanwhile they only thing they’d haul in this hypothetical wagon is their cat to the vet, the newest copy of World of Warcraft, and a flatpack end table from Ikea if they’d ever go on sale.
“Hey guiz, what would you import if that white house petition repealing the 25 year rule goes through??”
“Uhh, a C63 wagon so I could haul all those chicks I swipe past on Tinder who won’t snapchat me back, and because I move apartments every fortnight requiring a lot of cargo space. Or I would move if I wasn’t living at home working on my community college computer sci degree.”
You are a cruel, cruel man :)
Eh…I never did like these rounded windows that Mercedes-Benz put on most of their wagons (and the R-Class)…and for me, that ruins it. But I *really* like the current E-Class sedan, coupe, cabriolet and wagon.
Caramba!
Mercedes AMGs, BMW M cars are the only reason I buy lottery tickets. If I ever hit the jackpot, I’d want that AWD Ferrari wagon with the V12 just to thumb my nose at the Ferraristas. But a tenth place payout and a C63 would be just fine.
No luck in 40 years of trying. But the occasional daydream is worth a coupla bucks every now and then..
You and me both wmba. There’s an older lady who drives a black FF around downtown Toronto. I am really hoping that she’ll notice the dashing young auto journalist in the grey Miata. A longer shot than your lottery ticket but a man can dream…
Though this Merc is tasty, I’d still rather a RS6 Avant.
