Nissan, Ford, Toyota and Ram, even Hyundai, brought a lot to the truck party at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. So, what did General Motors contribute to the buffet?
Paint and chrome packages for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Canyon.
AutoGuide reports Chevrolet is offering a “Custom Sport” package for the 2016 Silverado LT and LTZ. Said trim consists of body color-matching bumpers and chrome-accented grille/surround. Chrome door handles, mirror caps, side molding and 20-inch wheels complete the package, expected to retail between $1,950 and $2,950.
GMC, meanwhile, introduced the “Nightfall” package for Canyon SLE crew-cab buyers, which throws black paint all over the body. Polished exhaust tips, 18-inch wheels, automatic climate control, and remote start make up the rest of the offering. No price was mentioned at this time.

I gotta say, that Silverado looks pretty good in all black.
Who doesn’t like a big black truck?
Did you see the new teeeeveeee ad for the new Colorado where AC/DC’s “Back In Black” is featured?
INTERIOR MATERIALS/DESIGN BY FISHER-PRICE.
Maybe I should just buy an old Yukon and black it out instead.
Nah, don’t let DW’s repetitive rant change your mind. The new Silverado’s interior is actually pretty nice.
COLORADO.
-vs-
SILVERADO.
Reading is fundamental.
Reading is fundamental, as is comprehension. He mentioned buying a SILVERADO not a COLORADO, so why would I address him about a COLORADO? Oh, maybe because you said COLORADO? Well you see, I wasn’t making a specific comment about your COLORADO remark, I was just making a general statement about your ongoing repetition of criticism.
PonchoIndian smokes DeadWeight… nice. I too tire of DW’s constant bashing of GM. GM deserves some bashing, but DW does it as a reflex.
GM deserves more than bashing – it truly & fully earned the right to go out of business forever.
But mere taxpayers (involuntarily) bailed it out.
Is there an eyeroll emotion to put on here.
We know…we get it.
As how you professed your comradery to 28 cars the other day, you and I also have more in common than you’ll ever know. Similar background, same age, same family history etc… I just haven’t fallen into the “old man” attitude of telling everyone how it used to be and how much I hate how it is now.
AMG-FTW, am I right?
Apparently Roger Smith didn’t run over your kitty, makes a difference
Had I been allowed to have a kitty I think my Dad would have been the first to run it over :)
Did you see the part where the Materials are durable for a trucks intended purpose and easy to use and simply laid out? Nope, you were too busy bowing to the the rising sun.
Those that have to keep black paint looking shiny
Black is the greatest color for those with OCD ever conceived, keeps ’em busy for days
So you offer paint/trim/chrome packages, and neglect to give options for badge color.
Okies. ;)
I’m seeing so many new Silverados with the Bowties blacked out, that I thought it was factory. It’s the 1st thing I’d do, before ditching the air dam. Interesting shade of puke GM uses though.
But the best looking Silverado is the black base truck with blacked out trim, except matte black. No chrome anywhere. And normal headlights instead of goofy projector/cat eyes.
That’s what I want. A blacked out everything 4×4 with black steel wheels and the biggest engine Chevy will let me buy.
Of course, it’s not like I’m sitting on enough cash to buy a new truck anyway, but a guy can dream.
So you can get body-color bumpers in place of the fogey-looking chrome ones… but then as part of the same package you get giant chrome wheels.
Headdesk.
The most tasteful full-sizer currently on the market is the 2015 F-150 with Sport Appearance Package (that gives you body-color bumpers/handles) and the silver-painted six-spoke 20″ alloys, which are nice and simple and not nearly as obnoxious as GM’s 20s. It’s the only full-sizer out there right now that doesn’t have gratuitous chrome somewhere on it.
I agree body colored always look better, plastic chrome is as gaudy as spinners.
That rear window line on the canyon and colorado is just baffling… why doesn’t it run parallel to the bed? The swoop looks goofy…
Crash protection? The feeling of crash protection? ‘Style’? Probably some combo of those.
I thought I was the only one that was bothered by this. Could be worse… It could be a BMW i3.
I am no fan of paint and trim packages – with that said the GMC Canyon Nightfall is a darn nice looking trucklet.
Bring back the full-size extended cab. That way GM (Chevy/GMC) will outsell Ford. The basic cabs just sit on the back lots waiting for buyers without the incomes to buy real trucks. Some people do not need four doors but appreciate the access and storage of extendeds! Kage, my Collie/Shepherd dog prefers the 2013 GMC Sierra Extended Cab over anything newer.
They (and I) have it. It’s called a double cab. The rear doors are real doors so the driver doesn’t have to awkwardly open his/her door to let out someone behind them.
The other major benefit to this style is a massively more ridged cab and chassis.
@ Jeff. …. I thought the double cab replaced the extended. BTW it’s never wise to judge someone’s income by what they prefer to drive. Personally I prefer the reg cab , with an 8 ft box , to a ” real truck”.
Right, “typoed” too fast. But at my dealerships, from the sales level, many of the buyers of the regular cabs wanted the better offerings but the “bank” would only finance the regular cab with the big rebate. The back lot at my Auto Center is full of GMC and Chevrolet regular cabs and I can’t help but think that those numbers would be less if GM still offered the extended cabs like they once did.
Before trucks had four doors I thought the regular cabs were Real Trucks!….
I feel sorry for GM. We have the Detroit Auto Show where Ford trots out a new Raptor, Toyota trots out a new Tacoma (okay, new for Toyota’s conservatism), Ram trots out a new truck package, and Nissan trots out a Cummins powered HD killer.
GM trots out a few monochromatic trim packages……………..
WTF?
DeadWeight – bash away.
It’s a sad story. DeadWeight comes from an old Detroit family who were heavily invested in GM in 2007, well you can guess what happened. To add insult to injury the family was even driven to the poor house in an Escalade. DeadWeight has never really recovered from the shame and humiliation of that event
GM built the area, literally, where I grew up, both in terms of white collar & blue collar areas.
But I cut emotional, transportation & economic ties to GM, and saw GM’s horrific future in my mind’s eye as early as when I was 18 years old, as I had already been burned too frequently by GM vehicles (thanks, Roger Smith!) at that young age, and needed a truly reliable vehicle (Honda Civic) to get me though college, and I never looked back.
GM disgusted me then & disgusts me now. Even after a taxpayer-sponsored bailout, recalls of tens of millions of shoddy GM vehicles with life-threatening defects in just the last several years, and a slew of new botched products in terms of being unreliable & overpriced (e.g. Cadillac), GM is still an obtuse, arrogant, bureaucratic nightmare of a massively inefficient & sloth-like, subpage (subprime?) corporation, with the most idiotic management structure of any major automaker.
Not to mention the morning Roger Smith ran over your kitty in his Eldorado on his way to work. Michael Moore got the whole thing on tape
I like neither Moore or Smith.
Roger Smith makes the Top 3 WORST CEOs OF ALL TIME list, comfortably.
If there’s a He11, Roger Smith is being forced to commute around its roads & highways in an Oldsmobile Firenza.

So much awful in one car, how’d they do it?
I had a friend whose parents bought one new and it – literally – was in for repairs at least once a month (usually twice), for years.
His dad believes that car was the catalyst for lemon laws.
I hear you. I honeslty don’t see how GM is presently selling as many vehicles as it is. Aren’t they having record sales or something like that?
I hear you DeadWeight. Honestly, I don’t see how GM sells as many vehicles today as it does.
The black bowties are factory offered. The double cab replaced the extended cab and increased crash worthiness substantially with the introduction of the pillar and access ease. Rebates have been larger on the double cab most of the year. More Chevy trucks still actively registered since 1981 than Ford even though Ford sold more-hmmmm maybe they last longer. The combination of GM and GMC large SUV’s own almost 75% of that segment-that is called domination and there is good reason for it-Chevy is better at building them. Do not hate on DW too much as every thread needs someone to be so obviously biased that they force even GM haters to look again at the product line to confirm their suspicions that hey maybe that hater is delusional. Thanks DW.
