Shopping for a new Toyota 86? The newly revised JDM model is gaining an injection of style for one variant, in the form of the style Cb.
AutoGuide says the 86 style Cb — or Cool beauty — is meant to inject fashion sense into the low-cost sports car, featuring a face that wouldn’t look too out of place next to its older siblings like the 2000GT. Other features include two-tone paint, leather steering wheel and woodgrain instrument cluster.
The overall 86 range gains revised power steering, improved ride comfort, and a more rigid frame, all features it will share with its Subaru BRZ twin. The BRZ, however, will have more unique interior features, such as satin silver bezels for the steering wheel and shift panel. Powertrain upgrades were not mentioned at this time.
More 2000 GT, which is what it should have had from the beginning.
Just needs a redesign on those ugly tail lights.

I have to say that bringing back some kind of 2000gt look wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.
It’s unfortunate they didn’t give the rear any retro treatment. Now the front and back don’t match.
And it looks a leeeeetle bit like a Solstice now.

I got the same vibe. The angle of the photo even makes it look like it has a FF layout.
That said, remove the fender vent thing and whatever that thing is that seems to be protruding from its ass, give it some decent wheels and a paint job, and take a photo that reflects its true drivetrain layout; and it would be the prettiest Eclipse ever conceived.

Not sure about the front end but love those wheels.
All this car needs is a better torque curve. No dip in the middle and a screaming high end that gets you 8000+ rpm and 230 hp. (Turbos are for porkier cars.)
MORE POWER please! Before these things disappear forever… At this point I would even be happy with 230BHP.

I never had a problem with the twins’ noses. There are several other changes they should make before the front bumper cover.

This is actually quite pleasant, a car that isn’t all “ARGH! I’M SUPER STEROID PUMPED! IM GONNA SET SOME NURBURGER RING TIMEZ!!”.
The guage clusters nice too, lets hope it has a decent 2.0 litre engine this time rather than some parts bin Subaru special.
Hek, throw an optional Camry V6 in it, that’ll give it a nice 268hp to play with.
Apparently CyberStork is a Toyobaru gauge cluster customizer. Maybe they can do something for the ATS (woof!)
Parts bin implies that the engine was in a different car first. The FA20 has never appeared in anything other than a BRZ, FR-S, or 86.
The recently introduced WRX shares bore and stroke and is an FA20 family engine, but the similarities end there.
Camry V6 is transverse mount and lacks the required block machining to be mounted longitudinally. The 1GR (Taco), revised 1GR (4Runner), and 2GR-FSE (IS350) are Toyota’s only longitudinally mounted V6 engines. By the time you fit it, crash test it, and upsize the diff, tranny, and axles to support the extra power, you are looking at a huge investment for an extra 5000 sales a year. I just spent 10 days in Japan. This car was built for the Japan market first and foremost. It won’t broach 2.0L any time soon. It won’t see a turbo until Subaru gets more capacity.
The FA was built from the FB, so its parts bin in my book.
If Toyotas investing money into a new look I’d hope they’re investing into new hardware too.
Looking at the back end I cant say that I like this new look, we got yet another case of where a cars face doesn’t match its back end.
Why? A quick special edition with some cheap body work changes is an easy sell. Actual powertrain work would cost a lot more money, and wouldn’t be made back in sales.
This is still supposed to be profitable (even if it isn’t really).

I drove one of these at a media even with great expectations. What a disappointment. My 1990 AWD Eagle TSI Talon, 25 years ago, was a MUCH better car.
The 1990 Talon TSI is hard to top – it was a great performance value for the money. I’d happily buy one in the signature two-tone black / silver if they made them today.
I like the looks of this 86.
I like the look better than the current car. If they offered a sunroof, I’d have one in my garage. A sunroof would allow the cabin to be opened up a bit, less claustrophobic.

The lighting and excellent photography probably make it look nicer than it would be in real life, but this car looks SO much better than the current generation! The gauges are terrific, the front has a smooth, classy, sporty look with original and classic/inspired elements.
Two thumbs up for the “Cb” design language – it’s a winner, and hopefully will be embraced and enhanced across Toyota’s full line, and influence other car makers as well. (God knows we’ve had way too much of the jelly beans, followed by “flame” surfaces and meaningless, unnecessary creases and bends!)
And since no one has gone there yet, Cb gets a big 10-4 there, good buddy!

This particular edition costs 4.2 mil.
