As part of its efforts to re-brand crossovers, the Mercedes-Benz ML is now the “GLE”, the X5 to the GLE Coupe’s X6.
Along with a diesel 4-cylinder and a gasoline V6 (with or without turbos), there is an AMG version, the GLE63 AMG and an “S” version. The diesel, dubbed the GLE300d makes 2.1-liter, four-cylinder diesel making 201 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque, while the atmospheric V6 3.5-liter V6 makies 302 hp and 273 lb-ft. The turbo V6 makes 329 hp and 354 lb-ft. The AMG versions use the familiar twin-turbo V8 will make 550 or 577 hp depending on grade. A plug-in hybrid version will also be available. Full details will be announced at next week’s New York Auto Show.

So no plebeian V8.
Could you please explain for me? When I think plebeian, I think 4 cylinder.
As much as I like to mock Daimler’s naming shananigans, this actually makes the line naming *more* rational.
Not completely rational, but more rational.
(I understand they were forced to add the “L” because BMW raised a fit about the similarity to the M3. Which is understandable.
But still. It should have just been the M-Class.)
The “L” between the G and the size-code still baffles me, though.
(GLA: A class-sized. GLK: Short GL, because GLC would have been too easy. GLE: E class-sized. GL: Just big. G: Hey, we never said this REALLY made sense?)
I long for the 80s and early 90s, when the letters *made sense*.
When the GLK is redone it will become the GLC.
Exactly. The lineup will become GLA-Class, GLC-Class (old GLK-Class), GLE-Class, GLS-Class (old GL-Class), and the grand-daddy Geländewagen shall remain the G-Class.
Really, the whole “GLK” thing evolved from the fact that the GLK-Class was stylistically and hierarchically a compact, or “kompakt” in German, GL-Class. Similarly, the E-Class coupe was formerly the CLK-Class, or compact CL-Class, and the SLK-Class was a mini-SL-Class. But that kind of nomenclature is no longer sustainable.
That’s gonna remind me of Mazda from the 80’s.
GLC was a Great Little Car.
The GLE63 still uses the M157, the 5.5-liter unit, as per the press release. Or at least that’s what it said on Newspress.
Damn! Now I want one!
* Yawn *
A lot of suburban, upper-middle-class Stepford Wives are gonna be pissed.
Stupid is as stupid does.
For some reason “GLE” screams “econobox trim line” to me. I’m not sure why…
GLE reminds me of Volvo.
GLE reminds me of Nissan trim levels from the 90s.
I always liked GXE.
