While “Top Gear” moves forward with new host Chris Evans at the helm, Clarkson, Hammond and May are closer to introducing a new show of their own.
Jeremy Clarkson confirmed the news to The Sunday Times, the details of which are still unknown beyond speculation the new show featuring Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will be on Netflix. Said details are projected to come in the next few weeks, with the first episode to debut before “Top Gear” returns after next March.
Meanwhile, May will host a two-episode series called “Building Cars Live” on BBC Two. The 90-minute episodes will be broadcast live from BMW’s MINI factory in Oxford, England, where he and co-presenters Kate Humble and Ant Anstead will follow the process of building a car from raw materials. The series will also air before “Top Gear” returns.
The worst-dressed men on television are back!
And they’ll continue to prove that boys will be boys. And that some middle aged men, will also be boys…
Dad jeans, dad jeans everywhere.
They’re only real dad jeans if they’re Levi’s, Wranglers, or Lees (or Carhartts if you’re my dad) from the early 90’s that are that faded because they’ve been worn for 25 years straight, not because they came from the store that way. These guys jean fades are a little too regular to be legit.
At least most of their collective teeth pointed in the proper direction…most of the UK being an orthodontist’s dreamland of opportunity…
“most of the UK being an orthodontist’s dreamland of opportunity…
Ha, but that will pale in comparison to being an Osteopath or Chiropractor for the new generation of “text neck” therapy needed worldwide…
Maybe this time they can track test their cars when it isn’t pouring rain out.
That would be difficult unless they move to another country, or film at a certain time of the year only, merry-ole England has a lot of rain.
I always enjoyed that whatever weather attitude, part of the britishness of the show. I had heard years ago that at an english drag strip part of tech is they check your wipers. In America we pack up and go home if it sprinkles a bit.
Don’t they just film “will it drift?” when it gets too wet?
They do that in the dry. They dont stop stig laps or SIARPC in the rain, which apparently offends some americans’ sense of justice!
Yawning now. The last few years of TG have been antidotes for insomnia.
Agreed. Their schtick and oddly tiresome social attitudes, whether real or imagined, had me no longer looking to see what is on this week. As of about two years ago.
So where exactly am I supposed to send my 30 second video?
Here’s everything you need to know, Mr. BigTruck:

Thanks!
BTSR actually does have my vote. I don’t agree with him on much, but Mopar worship and more powah would be entertaining in a Top Gear format.
I’m sure they’d make fun of him by putting a proper euro rally team against his JGC SRT on a rally course… But I’m OK with that!
Good for them.
I may be the last Netflix non-subscriber. Finally, a reason to subscribe. My grandkids will be relieved as they’re convinced I’m the last of the dinosaurs.
Feeling inspired. I think I’m going to run out and get a smartphone and learn to text.
One of the last; I don’t have a Netflix account, either. That said, I’d pay for one if I can watch Kill La Kill and Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt dubbed, as well as every season of Littlest Pet Shop and My Little Pony.
I’ve heard of Panty & Stocking (have costuming friends who were doing cosplay fifteen years before the term was coined, say, Starship Yamato back in the mid 70’s) but have yet to see any episodes. It should be intriguing enough to get me off my butt and try to buy the BluRays.
Starship Yamato = Star Blazers? (am currently waiting for part III of season I to be delivered), bought first DVD as joke on son, he likes just as much as I did in 80-81′.
judging from your profile pic I’d have figured you would want to have netflix so you could watch all of RWBY in one go…
If RWBY weren’t directly uploaded to Rooster Teeth’s YouTube channel already, I’d definitely be on it.
Also: I’m already caught up, and await Vol. 3! :D
how do you think it’ll turn out?
I believe Team RSTR can make Vol. 3 live up to Monty Oum’s legacy, maybe even surpass it.
I watched both of those subbed, but only bits and pieces of PSG dubbed.
In my case, next week I move from the sticks to civilization, and as a result get to drop The Laurel and Hardy Phone Company (aka, Century Link) DSL for something that is actually high speed internet that I can get thru a 1/2 hour television show without rebuffering (you don’t want to know how many rebuffers it takes to get thru Au Pair Girls). Can’t wait. My Netflix usage is going to skyrocket.
No netflix, no cable, no nothing here. Just an antenna on the side of the house. Well i have two tuners, a media PC, usenet and sickbeard if you know what that is. I guess i will subscribe to the new show then.
Netflix SUCKS.
It’s not worth $5 per month as their streaming selection is horrid.
If Clarkson-Hammond-May’s stuff is as abysmal as it’s been for the last 2 seasons of Top Gear UK, which is so awful it’s hard to overstate how horrible it was (hot hatchback comparo today vs 80s, Bridge over Kwai, Trucks in Myanmar, etc.) , their show will be an instant fail.
I say this as one who is a big fan of TG UK as entertainment when the three presenters were in their stride, between Season 12 and Season 18 (maybe 17).
The last two seasons were nothing short of unbearable.
Im hoping a fresh start, new show will maybe give us some good stuff. Certainly the capability is there, look at the other shows clarkson did like motorworld and car years. There is plenty of opportunity for them to do something different than more scripted coincidences.
More of only European cars are any good, anything Japanese or American sucks again? No thanks, I’ve had enough of fantasy land BS
Pretty much. The America-bashing got old from a guy who’d be singing “Deutschland Uber Alles” before every soccer game if it weren’t for us. Ditto for the Frogs.
(Then again, if not for the Frogs, we’d be singing “God Save The Queen”…so there’s that)
We do sing God Save the Queen. Just with different words.
He’d be singing “Deutschland über Alles auf der Welt” (all four verses of it) if it weren’t for _the Soviet Union_.
There, FTFY.
Waaaah foreign show doesn’t pander to your patriotic sensibilities get over it and enjoy!
you americans have a Top Gear suited to your sensibilities… its called Top Gear America
one of the reasons why Top Gear UK is successful is that it is so British. It celebrates European cars. This is a good thing. Their dislike of the Germans and the Americans (and Mexicans and certain South Americans) is a good thing.
I get the feeling that certain people really want ALL TV to pander to them. This aint how it works. The UK taxpayer used to pay for Top Gear UK. Surely you can see why its aimed for them? By coincidence a lot of the world seemed to like this formula. The fact that large swathes of the world doesnt is also a good thing.
You are wrongly assuming that the US version of Top Gear is some sort of success in the United States.
It isn’t. On a typical night, more viewers are watching cable reruns of “The Big Bang Theory” than this show. It could not possibly survive on a broadcast TV network with the kind of ratings that it has, and the critics dislike it.
Very interesting. Those of us who would never think to watch it are apparently legion.
Being only distantly aware of the hubbub surrounding the show, I thought it was also huge in the US.
US Top Gear, canceled, gone, kaputz, thankfully. The fat guy has a new show that sucks even more. Who keeps giving these people money to produce stupid shows?
I dunno, I like Lost In Transmission. I like the idea of a guy who goes out of his way to help people get their classic cars (even if said classics are a Delorean or a VW Thing) back up and running.
Never seen Lost In Transmission but will look it up…I enjoy Wheeler Dealers, Mike Brewer is a bit much but makes for a decent show on buying and restoring classics from the perspective of how you might fix it yourself – they’d never make money if they had to pay for labour.
Starring one insufferable prick and two guys named “Pay Me Please.”
FreedMike – the formula worked for a long time. They now get to die on Netflix instead of BBC. That is unless they come up with fresh material which I seriously doubt. As the saying goes, “there is no fool like an old fool”.
The stories going around is that the BBC was willing to pay more to get Clarkson back and with that failing, offered the other two £4.6 million each to do it alone… they were all turned down (obviously).
So in fact it isnt about F YOU, PAY ME…
At this level its not about money, hell they all have more money than they will ever need.
The Best Show on TV becomes the Best Show on the future of TV.
You can always count on the TTAC crowd to sneer at someone else’s good news, and it;s happening again like clockwork.
exactly! Get so tired of the anti-TG. Why can’t folks just let me have my comic book entertainment?
I don’t have any problems with a TV show named “Top Gear.” I just have a problem when raging a**holes like Jeremy Clarkson continue to succeed.
Clearly you haven’t met our US Congress.
Nothing but successful a$$holes.
Ok to be fair this is an predominately American website, so these are the reasons, in my opinion, is why TGUK gets a semi-hostile reception here.
1, The american sense of humour is a lot different than the UK*
2, The poms delight in tearing down institutions
3, We were masters of the world at one stage and we resent the colonial upstarts taking that away from us
4, You don’t like underdogs winning, i.e. Firefly
5, What happened to TG USA?
6, TGUK is the humour section at the back of the car magazine, if you want stats and “serious” car testing, look elsewhere, i.e “Fifth Gear”
* You like your humour telegraphed so that you know when to laugh, whereas we like our humour subtle and dry, except for Benny Hill, The Young Ones and Filthy Rich & Catflap!
There’s no great cultural issue here.
It’s fairly simple: TTAC is a magnet for moaners and complainers. This website began as a welcome antidote to auto industry PR, but some who comment here have turned that into a license to whin(g)e about everything.
Anyone what cheese with their whine?
Geez. I didn’t realize one needed a license to whine, moan and complain. Where can I buy one, and how much does it cost?
jimbob457 – also known as BMW = Bitch Moan Whine
Please wire US$5,000 to:
TTAC Whining License
c/o Pch101, Bank of Grand Cayman
(That is for a restricted one-year license. An unlimited lifetime license can be obtained for an additional $20,000.)
Cheque’s in the mail……
I never watched Top Gear for the cars. It was always about the presenters, their chemistry and interactions. The cars were more like props on that show.
I think the reason why much of the automotive press has acted like the PR wing of the BBC as regards Top Gear is that the idea that there’s a hit tv show even peripherally about cars validates the hobby.
I can’t speak to the show itself because I’ve only seen a single full episode. It was entertaining, but a bit silly. I guess that’s true of other British imports like Benny Hill and that sitcom on PBS my mom watches.
Ronnie you are really missing out for such a well read/watched car guy! Its sure popular to hate on Top Gear, but if you go back and watch from the rebirth, there is some good stuff in there, The boys bring a great perspective of emotional connection to the automobile that most american auto journos lack.
The derision you hear is for what the show had become not for what it was along the way. It was just a quirky BBC show not many knew about when i started downloading rips of it 12 years ago.
When Clarkson showed up with his car converted to motor home that devoted most of the interior space to a “Zen contemplation garden”,I couldn’t stop laughing. That sort of thing is what makes TG so much fun to watch. And, to be fair, Clarkson was always quite warm and welcoming to every star who took on the challenge of driving the reasonably-priced car. I never saw him treat a single guest badly.
I think the problem stems from the fact that the show seems to be so giant and get so much press and money that everyone else picks up the scraps so there’s a lot of jealousy there.
I find people like Chris Harris, Harry Metcalfe and even Matt Farrah and lord help me… even Pulitzer Dan Neil more suited to my tastes but where are they exactly? Gawker gets more press than them…
Top Gear (UK) was the most watched/popular/successful ‘factual’ TV show in the world, regardless of its viewership in the U.S.
Netflix will probably want it to develop a larger American audience. Hopefully they won’t “dumb it down” to do this, generally the American media is geared to the lowest common denominator.
Personally I don’t wish to see James May competing against the Duck Dynasty family or Honey Boo Boo for ratings.
Hooray! Now maybe I’ll feel comfortable watching the last episdodes of Top Gear – I’ve allowed myself to live in denial by not watching them therefore maintaining the illusion that I haven’t actually reached the end of the show. Here’s to hoping the trio don’t feel like they need to edit/censor themselves more than on the BBC and that Netflix gives them the freedom (and budget) to be themselves.
Some say that they have a gig going with a company that has been under the radar named Stuffistry.
I wish Clarkson and co all the best and I really hope they succeed, and prove that free speaking on-air talent > 6 figure leftist BBC executives sucking off the public t*t.
While I may not be able to do what Clarkson does (for better or for worse) $50 says that 85% of the folks here can do whatever upper management does at the BBC at a deeply discounted rate.
“Dad jeans, dad jeans everywhere.”
Haha so true.
I’m just curious how they configure this show – same over the top drama and production value?
What about the Stig?
Stars in the cars?
I will watch just out of curiosity, but then quickly tune out.
The formula worked pretty well for a while…the Bard, the Bloke and the Snob. I’m sure I’d get a lot more out of this if I understood the fine gradations of British Class.
For me, it had two great selling points. First, it was a great travel show. I’ll never get to a lot of the locations they went to…and I like to travel, and even if I get there, Avis isn’t tossing me a Porsche/Ferrari. Enver Hoxher’s private road ? Trashing a GT-R in the outback of Oz ? Hot laps in Dubai ?
The silent fourth member of the show was key. Nowhere else did you see a straight up comparison of cars by lap time.
It will be interesting to see what they do with the new show.
