Folks over at Chrysler have filed another extension for the Barracuda nameplate, according to Allpar, which would be at least the fifth extension in three years with no new car in sight.
The filing over at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is wonderfully vague, specifying only “passenger automobiles, their structural parts, trim and badges” in the filing made June 23.
Reviving the Barracuda name would be incredibly difficult, considering it may not currently have a place to live.
In 2012, Chrysler rumbled about replacing the current-generation Challenger with an SRT Barracuda, but those plans never materialized. We got a 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat and we have yet to hear anyone complain.
The aging LX platform should be replaced in the coming years and could produce Alfa, Dodge, Chrysler, Lancia or Maserati vehicles. The original Barracuda was based on the Valiant so it’s possible the new, smaller Giulia could be a future ‘Cuda platform.
Or it’s possible Chrysler just renewed the trademark because that’s what they do.

When Ann Wilson sang “Barra…Barracuda” it always reminded me of the evil Baron Barracuda in the Diver Dan kids’ show.
These days Ann looks a lot like Linda Ronstadt.

I’m not sure what the Barracuda is gonna be based on (platform), what engine options there will be or what the interior will be like, but I hope Dodge will make it some sort of Muscle car with something even more ridiculous than the HELLCAT inside. A lot of these old guys with cash would snap em right up.

Why can’t a company resurrect a brand name AND car name and just sell it through an existing dealer network. They own the rights to the names right?
For example, Chrysler Group could just call the car the Plymouth Barracuda and sell it through its Dodge Or Chrysler dealer network. Or GM could sell a Pontiac Trans Am through its Buick or Cadillac dealer network. It’s not like there’s be brand confusion. More like a double brand name.
Now that’s an interesting – but creepy – idea.

All of Chrysler’s channels are tied together. The could possibly use any of the names of any of their brands (imagine a 2016 DeSoto Fireflite!) and sell it in any of their stores.
GM still has the three channels, so selling a Pontiac Trans Am for example, would be a bit more difficult.
Sell it through Chevy dealers? Hells no, it’s bad enough they have the Camaro to compete with the Corvette, this would just start another internal war.
A Cadillac dealer? Again, something that would compete with any of the V line or V cars would be considered poison. Especially when it’s basically the same car (underneath) as the ATS…
Through a Buick/GMC dealership? Maybe. At least they could possibly get all the 50+ year olds like me to show up and look at it. And possibly sign a lease on a nice Verano on the way out of the door…
So, at best a new hypothetical Trans Am would end up selling Buicks. Mission accomplished. /sarc

I agree with this suggestion! Revive them as separate item names. Who cares, as long as you sell some and are keeping names alive in the public awareness.
The Pontiac Trans Am would certainly only be sold at Chevrolet dealers, parked right next to the SS.
I saw a very late model Trans Am this past weekend, with a trim I had not heard of. WG-6 or something? WU-6? It was pristine condition, all white.

The WS6 Trans Am had the Ram Air “nostrils” on the fiberglass hood. The Ram Air hood fed cold air directly into the intake adding a few extra hp. They also had bigger and wider 17 inch wheels, specially tuned suspension and a free flowing exhaust. They could have either an automatic or 6 speed. Most Ram Air cars only saw about 10 rwhp gain over the base model Trans Am.
Yes, the LS1 in the Trans Am and Camaro Z28 is identical to that of the C5 Corvette. The difference in the 345 (or 350 hp) in the Corvette to the 305 (or 320 hp) in the Trans Am and Z28 is strictly on paper. GM didn’t want the T/A and Z28 to be too close to the Corvette which cost $15,000 more.

I think WS6 trim also came with standard leather, the upgraded stereo, and possibly heated seats. One of my friends has a cherry red WS6/6spd manual in mint condition (40K). I believe it has nearly every option that year.

Last night I was watching some Breaking Bad season 3, and for the first time they spent some considerable time with the camera inside the Grand Wagoneer Skylar drives. I noted the steering wheel appears to be the exact same design as in the Caprice Classic we saw yesterday on the Junkyard Find.
Were AMC and GM using the same steering wheel supplier in the late 80s?
