General Motors announced Wednesday it would invest $1.4 billion into its Arlington Assembly Plant, which produces SUVs.
The investment will create a new paint shop, body shop and “general assembly area upgrades” for the plant that produces Chevrolet Tahoes and Suburbans, GMC Yukons and Yukon XLs and Cadillac Escalades.
Construction will take three years and plant operations won’t be impacted, GM said.
GM received tax incentives from Arlington for the plant expansion in April. According to minutes from the Arlington City Council, the plant will add 589 new jobs as a result of the expansion.
The announced $1.4 billion for the Arlington plant comes ahead of GM’s negotiations with the United Auto Workers, which will focus on pay raises for “second-tier” workers hired after the recession.
GM said it will invest $5.4 billion in U.S. manufacturing over the next three years. GM says it has identified $4.5 billion in improvements so far.
Mmm…union thuggettes!
I think this comment is uncalled for.
I’ve yet to receive a call for any comment I’ve made.
Anyone else? Can I put my cell number in my profile? I never look at that.
Tell me – what is it about the woman in the photo that makes you describe her as being a “thuggette”?
I’m using the contrast with these attractive and hard working women to play on the persistent and stupid TTAC meme of *all* UAW members being thugs.
Um… the not-so-artistic tats? If it weren’t for those arms, she’d be worth taking a closer look at.
Tats always suck but strong women are sexxay.
Those arms look just right to me, ink or not.
It’s too bad she’s not assembling a transmission — then we could get an outrage twofer.
I wondered how long it would take for someone to comment that the workers in the picture were female. You know, instead of commenting on the headline that GM is investing billions back into the company in this very country. Very first one…way to stick to the topic at hand
Maslow hierarchy. Bottom feeder, here.
This obviously isn’t working for you. Next time, clearly use the sarcasm font, then very slowly explain the punchline so that the point gets across. Then do it again.
Nope, gonna keep right on a-doin’ the same thing till I get a different result.
“lowerarchy” (?) :-)
Hey, it’s the modern day Rosie the Riveter!
How many assembly robots would $1.4 billion buy?
@eCurmudgeon..The young lady is part of the “engine dressing” process. They have not invented a “robot” yet, the will replace the dexterity/eye hand coordination of a human being.
Profit, profit, profit:

You realize this story was published in 1995…
So… did you do all of the chores that I gave you before I left for work at the plant?
Yes, Dear, yes I did!
If she’s not “attached” she may have just gotten a new Tinder profile pic…
Yep — :-)
why build a plant in the south if you have to deal with the UAW thugs. Surely Detroit doesnt’ have to recognize a union in a right to work state.
Menloguy, see what I mean?
I guess all you can do with this lot is catch them in bottles and let them loose in the woods.
Smart comeback, but I really think you meant to make a disparaging remark based on the appearance of the woman assembling the engine in the photo.
He’s mocking the folks who jump onto these threads and refer to union members as “thugs.” (RideHeight is a frequent user of the sarcasm font.)
Apparently that’s what a thug looks like — a normal person who buys groceries and does all of the other horrible things that working people do.
(I replied to a post from Menloguy that has since disappeared. Here it is, floating in the ether…)
No, thanks Pch but Menlopause is right.
He’s always right. Some day the world will admit that. He’ll *make* them admit that.
PCH101 – it’s awfully nice of you to come to RideHeight’s defense, but I think derogatory terms like “thuggettes” that attempt to negatively stereotype people do not belong on TTAC.
Pretty much every time that there is a thread here that makes a reference to the UAW, there is a particular group of usual suspects who start screaming “thug.”
He is mocking that. You don’t have to like it, but intentionally misinterpreting him just because you feel like it doesn’t do you any favors. It’s ironic humor.
PCH101- I think those particular group of “usual suspects” are referring to the UAW leadership as “thugs” and not necessarily union members who are doing their jobs on the shop floor. I don’t get the “ironic humor” and I still think the “thuggettes” term is inappropriate in referring to the woman in the photo.
Thanks for the tip. I had no idea that there was another website called The Truth About Cars where the union bashing was more nuanced.
Over here at this website, they pretty much use the term “thug” to describe anybody associated with the UAW.
No… Menloguy ….I’m with pch, and ride height, on this one.
I would be a retired, UAW and CAW member, and a reader of TTAC since Robert Farago wrote GM Death Watch #3, circa 2005.
Being refered to as a “Union Thug” by “some” of the idiots here, would be one of the more gentler terms, used to describe me
“I guess all you can do with this lot is catch them in bottles and let them loose in the woods.”
I laughed heartily. Well played.
By the time this plant is operational, gas prices could skyrocket again and once again those big SUV’s will sit unsold at dealer’s lots.
I still remember when gas prices hit their max and the Arlington plant dropped a shift; the SUVs were not just piled up at the dealers, but in a field next to the rail yard where they load them onto railcars for shipment; there were rows and rows of SUVs as far as you could see until demand finally caught up with supply.
Workin’ American gals, as natural as it comes! 1 good thing about the SUV craze, though I worry about what’ll happen when it ends.
Photo is staged. The girl on the right has no safety glasses.
Good catch!
And two loose necklaces. Big no-no in any industrial setting.
The loose hanging necklaces I thought were not allowed on an assembly line or industrial situation.
I too noticed the lack of protective eyewear and the loose jewelry, but do you think they could have chosen a staged photo that didn’t make it look like the woman on the left had a beard?
Little inside info guys. About 95 percent of the photos released to the press, are staged.
Big ups to TTAC for having a sexy woman of color picture for one of their articles.
They look like they could be David Lee Roth’s bodyguards.
Well, the Amazonian Guards have been out of a job for a few years now…
darkwing – maybe they will resurface when Davie gets back together for a Van Halen revival tour ………………….. and hell freezes over ;)
At the risk of not commenting on the photo, it’s great to hear GM is (continuing) to invest in the USA.
Carry on.
Since we’re all commenting on the photo, I’m gonna say that she’s absolutely gorgeous.
Well, this picture has nothing to do with Arlington, unless it’s the “unpack the crates and connect a few wires” on engines from Tonawanda. In case anyone gives a you know what.
