While some declare Volkswagen dead in their betrayed hearts over the recent emissions scandal, others see an opportunity for a discount on a diesel.
According to Forbes, though diesel sales during the first month of the scandal would resemble Kuwait circa early February 1991, VW could start moving diesels again once the general public’s memory fades enough to do so. However, selling diesels to new-car buyers would entail throwing a ton of cash on the hood in the form of “up-front rebates, no-charge extra equipment, free-fuel cards,” as well as “some kind of environmental-justice reparation like buying a rain-forest tree in your name.”
Further, the fallout would likely affect other automakers in the diesel passenger car game, such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes, though possible discounts forthcoming wouldn’t keep one’s wallet too fat as the rebates VW could offer.
Some consumers, however, aren’t waiting until the first fires are extinguished. The Guardian reported on a couple visiting a VW dealership in Blackburn, England for the sole purpose of buying a Golf with as much cash on the hood as they could get. The husband, Warren Marvelley, knows all about the ongoing emissions scandal thus far, but isn’t bothered by it, not when it could benefit him and his wife, Jane, anyway:
VW have said they want to be transparent and do the right thing, and I’m pretty confident they will. They’re a good company, so I think they’ll feel obliged to compensate people.

You’d be much better off with a Volvo.
The new XC90 looks sweet, just sayin….
I drove it and made a short video review. It’s fantastic.
They ever fix the glass slap? The old ones had really loud doors.
The new XC90 makes you wonder why you’d spend 10K more, on average, for a German equivalent. And it’s extremely handsome, too. But I am a bit concerned about its 4-cylinder-only engine lineup.
Kyree, there are rumors that Chinese-made cars, made to Volvo-specs, will be imported to the US under the Volvo name.
My main concern with Volvo items post 1996 is always drive train (AWD and/or V8 items especially) and trim bits.
It’s way too easy to find young XC90 and S80 vehicles with falling off and discolored trim/buttons.
“there are rumors that Chinese-made cars, made to Volvo-specs, will be imported to the US under the Volvo name.”
It’s hardly a rumor.

Perhaps you forgot. They’re not made

Perhaps you forgot. They’re not made to Volvo specs, they are Volvos, since Geely owns the company.
BTSR impresses me today. Despite its 2 liter, 4 cylinder engine, the XC90 was found to be ‘fantastic’.
My local dealer has a 2013 Golf and three ? Sportwagon TDi. I don’t know why, the other local dealer has zero older cars in stock.
Oh, and is the site now named TTAVW ? I have a TDi under the (Nitrous Oxide) cloud, but I’d like to read about other cars.
They cheated. On Purpose.
They got caught big by folks who didn’t “have it in” for them.
At least they admitted it. Cue the shuffling of chairs.
How low can car prices go ? Will dealers fold ?
What will the US Govt do next ?
Fill in general bitching by owners.
Story done.
We’ve now exceeded even GM Deathwatch density.
We had TheTruthAbout Pedalgate, Ignitiongate, GM Deathwatch, and now TDItanic. Almost had an Alumighazi for the F-150. (And Hyundai-Kia Fuelgate) Stories get big and have coverage. Who wants to start taking bets on the next big story? Been a while since we’ve seen Honda or Nissan in the news.
Don’t forget Airbag-gate.
I want to begin betting on how many articles we’ll see on whatever issue arises next.
Back when Mazdas had rust issues I’m surprised that wasn’t milked to death, theres a ton of evidence, pictures, and what not. It’d be a little too late now.
Next story might be Nissan with their quality control issues, but nothing says page views like the term “SCANDAL”, “CHEAT”, “SWINDLE”, that evil giant VW is at it again and hes going to rob the orphanage! Somebody stop him!
I had a look at base Golf online. No deals yet.
Joss, contact hoyvw.com and/or rudolphvw.com in El Paso, TX. If you see something you like, make them an offer. Someone I know works there on the sales staff.
All the diesel VWs currently available in Europe (and probably also via US dealerships) have urea system and Euro6 compliance. These are not at least for now under any suspicion AFAIK. To get some turnover VW probably will have to put money on the hood anyways, though.
Won’t these cars fail smog checks (they’re not as controlled as the EPA emissions testing, so doubt the software can detect them in progress)?
They’ve gotten past smog checks for the last few years. States will presumably be paying closer attention to diesels in general and VW diesels in particular going forward, however.
By the same token, wouldn’t an emission failure before the 8 yr 80k mile point be VW’s problem? One would think they would be quick to handle it given this scandal, however as a former VW owner I would never give VW’s service departments the benefir of the doubt however.
Exactly. When my TDi puked a Diesel Particulate Filter at 83k, VW paid for 1/2….I wasn’t pleased as the filter physically broke, and there is a TSB for exactly my malady. $2400/2 which is $1200 out of pocket.
At 83k your DPF & Converter were just out of warranty, no? Is it 80k or 100k? Im sure VW would claim you did not use DPF friendly oil, or some other such excuse, in order to void the warranty coverage.
Was $2400 the price of the DPF setup alone or did that project labor? I’ve seen pictures of where the DPF sits on your diesel, I would imagine it is an incredibly time consuming R & R.
They won’t fail smog checks until smog testing stations go back to using the sensor in the tailpipe method. From what’s been written, if a smog check is done using the ODB port, it won’t capture an accurate read of the NOx emissions.
I’m guessing in a week or so there will be cash incentives on most if not all VW’s. In the meantime I will hand wash/wax/detail my Mazda and be ready to trade for that snazzy blue 2016 Jetta sitting on our local VW dealer’s lot.
As I said the other day: “There’s never been a better time to buy a car I don’t like.”
So, guess that diesel VW Amorok is now never gonna happen here.
I was told Spring. When the bites infested.
TDIs are being removed from dealer’s online inventories as we speak.
I visited my local dealer yesterday, 28 new TDIs were in the back with a sign that said “VW Inventory Hold 09/2015”. VW is subsidizing them $70/car, which totals to $1960 for 28 of them. As much as I dislike dealers, I kinda feel bad for them at the moment.
It’s hard to feel bad for any dealer, especially when most treat customers as little more than ATM’s with legs.

The amarok in brasil under investigation. Maybe in a few days a new scandal…
I had reliability concerns before, how long do you think these diesels are going to go without issues when they have to constantly meet emissions standards that they weren’t engineered to meet?
Still waiting for the $999 down, $99/month lease on a base Golf.
Doesn’t the cost of maintaining a diesel car kill the value of any fuel savings for those who keep a vehicle long term?
It can if something major fails like a DPF. Luckily VW has extended the HPFP and exhaust flap warranties to 120K for a lot of cars. But the DPF or turbo isn’t covered by any extended warranty. I bought my car for the fuel economy and the torque. If something breaks I’ll be mad but so far it’s been good in the 40000 miles I’ve had it.
I was looking at HR-Vs yesterday, I might end up with one of those if some sort of buyback occurs.
“They’re a good company, so I think they’ll feel obliged to compensate people.”
No, they’re a guilty company which got caught very red handed at cheating and lying. Stop rationalizing your selfish cheapskate nature, you wank.
Um, isn’t there an embargo on the sale of Diesel VW’s? So how are you going to get a “deal” when they can’t sell them?
The dealers will be motivated to move their non-TDI inventory, and VW is putting cash on the hood to help keep the dealers afloat. I admit, my wife and I looked at the used listings this weekend to see if there had been any serious down movement. Her ideal next car is a TDI Beetle convertible.
Just paid off my ’10 Golf TDI before the summer. Then the turbo failed at 80k. Exhaust flap thing failed a couple months prior (related?). A big part of the appeal of these cars was that they retained their value so well over time. What’s my kryptonite trade-in worth VW? If anyone gets a “sweet deal” it better be me. Go ahead, convince me to buy another one. I’m waiting…
