Mazda will show two different concepts of its lightweight convertible next month at the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas.
The first, a Speedster concept of the MX-5 Miata is a lightweight version of the two-door, two-seater that, among other things, dumps the windshield in favor of a deflector and hopefully looks like a damn Bocar XP-5.
The second, a Spyder concept of the MX-5 is a mild update of the small convertible with a sculpted leather interior and a “concept” Mercury Silver paint color. (Just make it available already, Mazda.)
The cars will be displayed when the show starts Nov. 3 in Las Vegas.

Less concepts please. The SKYACTIV 2.0 engine is an excellent platform that needs to be exploited. 14:1 compression (!!!!), dual VVT, direct injection, factory long tube header………… this thing is BEGGING for big cams and either a bigger multi stage intake manifold or full on ITBs. Throw in something on the suspension end (coilover + sway bar + harder bushing package) and you will have a real monster that still keeps within the Miata’s spirit and keeps weight low. Better Mazda get that money than the aftermarket…..
On paper there is potential, but are you bothered at all by the fact that with all of the changes they made in it for its install in the MX-5, including a switch to 91 octane fuel, it still doesn’t make any more power than it does in the FWD installs?
Yeah, it has dual VVT…but why is the high-rpm profile still so weak? Peak power @ only 6k rpm – ? Redline 6800 – ? I have seen Dynojet pulls on these – 140 lb/ft (higher than expected) and 140 hp (about what’s expected), so it’s not a case of it being wildly underrated.
I’m not bothered per se, just a little disappointed. The engine is brimming with potential…. getting it up to 180-200HP would put it up with some serious metal speedwise. This needs to happen.
Now give us a hatchback coupe along the lines of the first generation RX-7. MX-5 GT, anyone?

Yes, please! Not everyone wants a convertible toy, so how about a hardtop hatch, Mazda? But there must be fatal technical reasons why such a GT hatch is not possible, or they would have done it already…?
I remember the last generation speedster concept was very nice looking (ditched the windshield for a little deflector)– but I guess these things can’t get approved for the road.
Also, Mazda colors are awful.
Agreed. Bring back Mariner Blue, Sunburst Yellow, and British Racing Green!

If FCA sells a version of this, will they call it the Fiat Lux?
I like that taupe color with the brown top. But my MOST favorite Miata ever was this one.
