Weeks after European Audi owners could look to see if their cars were affected by the Volkswagen cheating scandal, Volkswagen of America added a VIN lookup to its diesel scandal site (which is buried by Google) for U.S. owners, Auto Guide reported.
The service redirects to Volkswagen’s recall site, where owners can enter their vehicle’s VIN. During congressional testimony Oct. 8, VW of America chief Michael Horn admitted that the U.S. site didn’t include the VIN tool and agreed with representatives who said it would be a “good idea” to include that for American customers.
More than 482,000 vehicles in the U.S. are affected by the diesel scandal involving Volkswagen and its 2-liter diesel engines.
In September, the Environmental Protection Agency notified Volkswagen that its cars violated the Clean Air Act by polluting up to 40 times more nitrogen oxides than allowed by law. Volkswagen admitted in September to officials that it had included an illegal “defeat device” that allowed its cars to pass emissions tests, even though the cars polluted far more.
Affect vehicles include:
• VW Jetta TDI (2009-2015)
• VW Jetta SportWagen TDI (2009-2014)
• VW Golf TDI (2010-2015)
• VW Golf SportWagen TDI (2015)
• VW Beetle TDI and VW Beetle Convertible TDI (2012-2015)
• VW Passat TDI (2012-2015)

My VIN popped up on the list the day after they posted the link.
I thought they had already admitted that every US TDI from ’09 – present was affected. What would anybody need a lookup tool for?
Yeah I agree I guess some congress person said it would be a good idea so VW said sure no problem.
Even if your car is affected, there’s nothing to do yet. You really can’t even trade the darn things. This logjam has to be affecting nearly every car dealer.
Some information that I saw said 2012 and 2013 Passats were not part of Dieselgate due to their use of the urea tank on those models.
My VIN comes up only with generic info saying “some models” are affected.
They are affected, but will likely not need a massive hardware-based fix; just some updated programming for the Urea system.
“the emissions issue”. That’s cute. Why not “the emissions fiasco” or “the emissions malfeasance”? Could they make any more effort to distance themselves from the responsibility?
Disappointed in the missed Vin Diesel joke opportunity.
MCBAIN: That’s the joookee.
Looks like my car needs 23O6 (aka the “nothing to see here” fix) and also the new 23Q2 fix (aka “the Holy $h1t, they found out” fix).
I don’t intend for my car to see the dealer again unless the HPFP or exhaust flap fails, so I’ll elect to skip both of their campaigns.
Uh. No link to the site? The other articles don’t seem to link to it either. That’s probably why it doesn’t show up on google. That & all the ads for slimy class action lawyers. Thanks for being a useful resource. :-/
