Volvo’s newest concept car is so advanced it doesn’t need sheet metal, wheels, doors, headlights or even an engine, man.
The Volvo Concept 26, unveiled Wednesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show, is the company’s vision for autonomous driving — which, at least publicly, it’s beating many of the big boys to the punch. The vision apparently includes a center-mounted tablet and an automatic 26-inch screen that emerges from the friggin’ dash.
Volvo didn’t announce why or even when the concept would appear in any of its cars, other than they thought that drivers a might be able to enjoy “The Avengers” in it’s full-screen glory instead of plotting to kill each other in traffic.
I tend to agree, but releasing the chair without much context seemed a little odd. Especially considering the company has eyes on getting into the compact crossover game and no convertible for the moment.
Back to Concept 26, Volvo announced it would sell 70,000 cars in the U.S. this year, and the automaker is itching to race up to 100,000 as fast as it can. So far, 17,000 XC90s have been sold in the U.S. and 80,000 have been sold worldwide, which isn’t bad for the car that Volvo projected would sell about 50,000 this year.
To accomplish that feat, they rolled out a luxury baby seat because you need to get them hooked early, I guess.

Except you can’t mount a passenger airbag in a moving television console. Also, why?
I’ll look forward to the Concept 28-Cars-Later. It’ll be brown and have a 3800TT.
Xzibit probably could.
Just sayin’
maybe they want to move into the X-Box market.
As long as I can hook up my PS4 and play Gran Turismo 6 while I’m waiting to get to my destination who in hell cares! I’ll need to keep my driving skills sharp somehow.
Jayzuz! They had a statuesque blonde there for a couple seconds but spend the rest of their time with weenie guy sitting at a prop from Gay Trek?!
Is that Wonder Woman’s jet or the emperor’s new clothes?
I used to be able to kill your toxic GIF with the Esc key. But you’ve somehow armored it against that.
You are OFF my Christmas list.
RH,
You can use Adblock to block the specific element of his avatar. It walks you through it, just make sure it says “Matches 1 item on this page,” and you can ensure you’re blocking only his avatar.
I didn’t realize I could do that until just now.
Thanks, Corey! I always have Adblock running but didn’t know it could be tweaked for this.
*BANG!*
Suh-weeet! GIF Sniper!
I’ve done nothing to it.
Well, with Corey’s help, I have :-D
As you wish. I’m using FoxReplace (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/foxreplace/) to replace all instances of “RideHeight” in my sight with “OldGrump”.
Much of Volvo’s currently available autonomous electronic gadgetry is also available in lower priced vehicles. I doubt Volvo will stay ahead, in this area, for very long. And, as a long-time Volvo customer, I don’t recall the electronics in my Volvos being long lasting and durable. Hopefully Volvo can demonstrate the durability of this electronic gadgetry on which their customers will be relying.
I don’t like large moving parts in my cars. Even if I could be 100% certain they won’t fail – I want to be able to look around and see exactly where I spent my money at any given minute.
One of my employees ordered an SRX and it came from the factory with a defective retracting LCD screen. Spent a week in the shop – brand new.
No thanks.
“I don’t like large moving parts in my cars.”
That would explain your affinity for FCA V8 vehicles. Their durability ensures that those large moving parts (engine, transmission etc) won’t do so for long ;)
YEAH – OK…neither of my cars EVER had a tranny or engine problem.
And by trading one in for a HELLCAT – I’ll be certain they don’t!
Neat idea, but I expect about 10 years before we see one on the roads. Other autonomous cars will be out there driving themselves before that 32″ TV screen is an acceptable piece of automotive hardware.
No cupholders?
Dear Volvo:
Please offer this interior separate from your cars, and find a way to adapt it into your older 7-900 line.
Sincerely
