I have become a Gin and tonic person lately and occasionally a Tom Collins. I do have a stash of Leinenkugel’s summer shandy in the fridge because it is damn delicious at a barbecue.
The thing I love about G&T is how easy it is to make. Three ingredients which you eyeball. In comparison, making a mojito is like a meal. I have to go pick spices from the yard, and muddle things.

How much does a tall can six pack cost in the US? Here in Toronto I’ll grab six Old Milwaukee because at $11.50 (near the legal minimum price for 6 tall cans) it’s 2.50 less than Budweiser, and I’m a cheap son of a bitch. Alcohol in Ontario is taxed at a rate to keep consumption in check, much like cigarette taxes are used.
Jeez. That’s pricey. A 24 pack of Bud or Bud Light goes for about $16 around here. You can get a 30-pack of Old Milwaukee cans for less than that.
You people should remember that bottled beer is where it’s at! Canned beer always tastes inferior IMO.
Real beer is usually $30/case in these parts, so in my view Bud Light is expensive.

Naw man. Canned is good. I like bottles, but one pint cans are where it’s at. Also, cans travel better in a boat, in a cooler, or on the beach. Cans be for summer.
I never go any of those places, ha. When we played croquet on the lawn, I just brought a table out there for drinks area.
There are some beers that do really well in cans, and I actually prefer them to be served that way. Session IPAs, some stouts, and some lighter brown ales. All better in cans.
Around here, all the local breweries are very on-trend with doing cans only. Go to a nice restaurant and get at $6 beer, and they bring you a can.

I haven’t ordered something with gin in it in over a decade. Maybe I’d like it now. I have a lot of scotch and bourbon I need to drink before I buy any gin though. And I can drink those with a couple ice cubes.

I usually go for Bombay or Hendricks. I never liked Vodka I like Bourbon and Scotch they were my go to drink until about 2 years ago (around when I first tried Hendricks). I remember early on I tended to drink rum drinks (boat drinks) but I haven’t ordered one of those in years.
I’ve got some Czech vodka at home which is ideal for such an application. The brand is called Stalin’s Tears.
No Segrams…long story. I’ll condense it.
In college. Asked a dude to buy us some Segrams Whiskey. He was a dumba$$ and bought gin. It was one of the big 1.5L bottles. Bought some juice. Drank the whole thing with a couple friends. Woke up with no pants on the floor or an MSU sorority at 5 am. Still had my wallet. Borrowed a towel and walked almost two miles back to my dorm. Passed a final exam at 9 am.
That story just made it sound like Seagrams caused you to be winning. I don’t see the prob. :D
Segrams Distillers Select is very different than regular, anyway. I wouldn’t buy the regular stuff. This comes in a very nice black bottle, and is not available in larger sizes. Seagrams employed a lot of my hometown before I was born, so I feel some connection to it.

Oddly I was in a bar in NOLA last year that had Moose Head it may have been the first time I drank since I lived in Maine on the New Brunswick border.
Gotta gives the hipsters credit for making the micro-brew scene into a Big Thing. Now everyone has access to brewskis that aren’t Molson / Labatt. Even if you don’t dig the man-buns and beards, the beer is the saving grace.

I live in Ottawa. Please tell me where I can find this “Canadian bacon” of legend. I’ve never been able to find it, despite searching on either side of the rivière des Outaouais. All I ever find is something called back bacon. I wonder why the Americans gave it the “Canadian” descriptor. I’m gonna go ahead and treat this like an open forum as only B&B stalwarts can:
Shopping for a cheap second car to keep my beloved 4Runner out of the salt, and to also use as a Lyft rig. Requirements are 2004 or newer, cheaper the better but an upper limit (ideally) of $3500. Got beaten to the punch on a really clean ’04 Lancer Sportback last night that sold for $2900 with 110k. Looking at a ’05 Ford Five Hundred with 139k miles (FWD and 6A, NOT AWD or CVT thankfully). What sayeth the B&B? I default to Toyotas in general, but I can’t touch a Camry that isn’t a rebuilt title (not allowed for Lyft), and the only Corollas within range are 04 cars in mediocre condition and 150k+ miles. I’m trying to stick with ‘unloved’ makes/models with clean histories and without a penchant for serious reliability problems or hard/expensive to find parts. A see Kia Amantis somewhat regularly, 04-05 Sonatas. Default reaction is to recoil, but is there any reason to fear these? Saturn Ions pop up, I figure a 2.2L Ecotec with a 5spd can’t be too bad, although my brother has seen some top end issues (manufacturing defect) on these motors before that required the head to be replaced.
Why would anyone buy a used Mitsu? Especially one with over 100k? It’s already on borrowed time.
A pretty common misconception IMO, mostly brought about by sub-prime owners putting the poor cars through the ringer. This generation of Lancer (at least the wagons) is actually 100% made in Japan and is a very well built car. Sit in the interior, it harkens back to the good old days of soft touch vinyl dash pads and nice clicking switches from Japan Inc. The other old school thing about them that is less desirable is the short 60k t-belt interval. Not ideal, but hardly a deal breaker for a DIYer such as myself.

Actually if you look at consumer reports and other reliability data Mitsu ain’t bad, as long as you avoid some of the higher tech stuff built in the 90’s.
I’m voting for a 12 year old Ford Taurus (possibly wagon). There are a million out there under $3,000 — just buy the one in the best shape you can find.
Amati is a goofball and IIRC is pre-Hyundai under the sheet metal. Sonatas of that era are generally good cars if not beaten on, as are the XG350s. Ions shed their trim and interior parts like a shaggy dog in Arizona.
Can you get in a Scion xB gen 1 for that money? Nice practical shape. Or a Matrix perhaps.
Gen 1 Outlander is a forgotten vehicle which is also Japan made.
I really like the Sport Backs but they are short on the ground. I saw one up here a few weeks ago as well but higher mileage. 04-05 Sonatas should be fine as long as the mileage isn’t to high. I have several relatives that own them (V6 versions) and my neighbor across the street has an 06 that seems to have held up really well (like no repairs other then brakes at 100k miles). For budget bang I would look at Mitsubishi’s, certain Nissan, Impala’s, Mazda 6, and maybe Fusions. Honda and Toyota are gonna be pretty much no go’s under 3k. I have seen several early 2000’s maximas that are clean in that range thou. I hate to even suggest this but certain disliked Mopar vehicles are hitting this price range with really low miles, and while some are crap (I’m looking at you 2.7) some really aren’t that bad.
Was looking for something before the TDI settlement broke. Found a 2007 Ford 500 for $2900 that appeared to be pretty well maintained with 100k on it. So maybe a 500?

Daily driving sub $5000 vehicles my entire life I used to buy at 8 years old now I’m averaging closer to 14 years old. Can’t wait for a correction on used car pricing.
What is needed more is asset prices to fall or wages to rise. Neither is likely to happen as they have been only growing farther apart since the 1970s.
This one is basically a restyled low-spec Sonata of the period, though, so it could be okay.
The Church will recommend G and W body 3800 of course, but also things like Vibe/Matrix, Scion xB, Acura RL, Gen 2 Focus, late DN101 Taurus/Sable (not good for Lyft but also Z-body Saturn SL as a great beater). I’d avoid GM Delta I bc f those. I know you like Mitsus, so those I guess. That Ford 500 sounds like high miles and you have to remember those are essentially a P2 Volvo in and out, and the P2 has its share of issues.
I’d also ask does Lyft have a rolling requirement every year for MY of the car you drive. I thought Uber drivers in Vegas told me Uber did, so if Lyft does as well you might be boned on an MY05 say next year.
Checked into the RL, and 04 was the last year of the old style. Can’t touch one for $3500 with <150k.
I don't think he will really enjoy Lyft once he tries it. He already got dat engineer money, them chauffeur pennies won't look like much.
We went through this with Dal, they were averaging $2600 when I crunched numbers for him. They also can do about 300K and be sold running. People don’t know what RL is and unlike Lex LS, it doesn’t sell itself. Old lady/estate RL MY01-04, this could be a nice buy and except for the trans and poor mileage, could be a nice runner.

The minimum Lyft allows in 2016 is MY04 however in several states and cities it is MY06 or newer. Like Uber, I expect them to raise requirements next year or certainly the year after. So my view is either drop the Lyft requirement because you’re going to get aged out soon, or up your minimum year now to MY07. Personally I’d drop the Lyft requirement and look for some unloved Japanese made iron MY00-06ish.
Uber drivers in Vegas were using their primary cars and beating the hell out of them, in most cases to help make payments. This might make sense when you are still in extended warranty/just out of it under say 80K but old car + mad miles + Lyft abuse? Ehhhhhh……

I have a cousin who started driving for Uber he was happy with earning about $12.00 an hour on average until I pointed out that with gas and wear and tear on his 14 optima it was well under minimum wage.
Precisely. I’m not sure what his market is like in terms of taxi demand, but if they money is there simply buy something newer and make payments. Then use Uber/Lyft to help make the payments. Uber drivers told me Uber takes 25%, and most fares in Vegas were around $10 or more. However insurance companies are not reacting well to Uber/Lyft, I believe only Allstate has a non commercial policy which offers Lyft/Uber coverage.

My lyft driving has nothing to do with making money, more of a side hobby for a guy that loves to drive and doesn’t mind meeting new people.
In what little driving I did with my Civic, I think I barely broke even on gas, and not even that once I factor in that I bought seat covers and floor mats specifically for the job!
I may look at a RL next time. I currently drive a P2 volvo the first 2 years of ownership wasn’t bad but the list of crap going wrong now at 130k miles is gettin old fast. (just dropped $1600.00 at a local indie)
On the RL I noticed my Indie mechanic was daily driving one and he had another around back I may have to ask him but they seem like a decent value.
I think they’re a good idea, especially the revised gen 1 version 01-04. And yes they look like a big Accord, but they come in cheaper when it’s time to buy. Got a good amount of space and a nice interior. And like 28 mentions, they’re forgotten and unwanted.
But the people who own them seem to take care of them. There are not many cars which fit all these criteria.
Similar age GS is another good option. A very sturdy car in either I6 or V8 guise, assuming you’re alright with RWD.
Dal on here has a great deal of knowledge on the Legend/RL (which is the gen 3 Legend). back in the day, UC dealers were wary of RL and Legend because of auto transmission issues (it uses a longitudinal transaxle similar to the Toronado of old) and they average about 16mpg city/21 highway which is terrible for a V6.
I’m tempted by it myself as a Sunday car but I use my Volvo 244 as one, perhaps when I have more room down the line. The thing is though, don’t overpay for an RL. A Lex LS can get pricey and is sometimes worth it, an RL should be a cheap buy and walk away from sellers who think they are selling an LS.
I have to go back to the indie garage on Tuesday because my car still has an oil leak, he’s promising to fix. I will ask what he thinks of his RL (his looks like a 2001-2004). I know before he opened his one man shop over a decade ago he was a Jag and Cadillac dealer mechanic, so the RL seems an odd choice.
3800 powered Pontiacs and Buicks should be on the list I agree. Lots of value in those, if you have patience you will find them for 3k clean and around 125,000 miles.
28 cars, in Indy the Lyft reg has been ’04 for some time now. People already in the system get grandfathered in once the bar is raised, which is pretty kind of them. Not sure about Uber here. Other states are stricter, Indiana gets by with the lowest bar of requirements, set internally by Lyft.
When you first sign up your “mentor” (ie another somewhat more experienced driver) checks your car out for overall condition, functioning HVAC, no weird smells, etc. Once you’re in the system and you want to change a car (like me), you take your new car to a shop along with a print out with a 19ish point inspection which is substantially more thorough. Brake pad thickness, tire tread depth, check for loose ball joints and tie rod ends.
Interesting. I’m surprised on the grandfathering, but personally I wouldn’t count on it long into the future. Eventually standards will change.

Turning things on their head fellas. I have in my possession to test out for the weekend, an 84k mile ’05 GX470. Oh buddy, set that suspension to “comfort” or even “normal” and it’s like you’re on a morphine drip. Makes the ol’ 4Runner feel like a real ox cart!

Local Mitsu dealer hooked me up :) returning it tomorrow at some point. In the mean time I have half a tank of premium to burn! It’s generally uncommon for them to do the overnight keeps for used cars, normally that’s for new cars only that they have many of.
Nice score, and almost unheard of for anyone outside the industry.
How much do they have on it?
Well they’re asking $17,700 or something like that. It’s right on the cusp of needing the pricey T-belt and water pump on the 4.7 at 90k, and it’s a Michigan truck so the frame has more surface rust than I’d like. It hasn’t been pampered either, the windshield has some etching from the bozo who didn’t change the blades in time, and the trunk door seal is shot. On the upside it has nice Michelins on it, drives without any weird sounds or vibrations, and the interior is pretty darn clean. I think I’ll walk away from this one owing simply to the chassis rust, but I am inspired to take a closer look at these. Not as versatile and missing the rolldown window of the 05-07 Sequoias that I’ve been scoping, but a nicer interior and the solid sort of build that I expect from something that comes out of the Tahara Land Cruiser factory. Princeton Indiana made Sequoias just don’t feel “right” to me in a way, as much as I would like to support our local guys and gals.
I’m ehhh at that price and with the condition. You enjoy Pursuing Perfection with your used rides, and the dude who owned it prior – didn’t.
Yeah I like the GX but not that much. I would rather get a Sequoia or a 3 row 4 th gen 4runner and save some cash. For me I would also have a hard time paying that when Grand Cherokee’s etc are so cheap.
$15K sounds like a generous offer given the issues.

Yeah if we do decide to make an offer, I’m topping out at $15k. One other annoying factor was lack of any remote key fobs, typical auction car in other words.
These aren’t exactly rare, and for the right one I’m willing to spend a decent amount more than $17k if need be. Higher miles don’t really scare me at all if I can snag a rust free dealer-maintained creampuff.
No problem, my fee is I get to borrow it for a weekend :D
I think if you find one for 10K even with slightly higher miles (under 140) it could be attractive.
mopar the 4th gen 4Runners are somewhat of a consideration, but the “squashed roof” feeling is even more of an issue than it is in my 3rd gen. Add to that, their prices are every bit as high as a comparable-year GX! I had tested an ’03 V8 Sport (115k miles, asking $9k) in forest green with the unpainted plastic bumpers that they had for the 03-04 “Sport” trucks, clean truck but it had a lot of frame rust. Probably not structural, but to a guy that has spent some time torching off frozen bolts, even a little rust is too much!
GX has a manually shifted t-case High to Low (fulltime 4wd, locking Torsen center diff), whereas 4g 4Runners are fully solenoid actuated, and they are known to have some issues at higher mileage. V6 4Runners have the MPG advantage of being able to drive in a true-RWD mode which is nice.
I’m surprised here in CT I see them at about 4-5k less then the equivalent GX. I looked at a trade in 2004 with thrid row and midlevel equipment (painted bumpers) 100k miles for 9,500 back in Febuary.
I really like the GX that would be a top pick for me, but I tend to see them as either overpriced or high miles around me. How much the looking for the 05.

yep. growing up in Detroit, Saturday nights during winter were Molson* Hockey Night in Canada, followed by The National with Knowlton Nash.**

Me, I’m waiting for Tim Hortons to come to Texas. Some people were excited when Krispy Kreme started opening stores here, but I think their donuts suck. A couple of their stores in the DFW area closed within a year.
We had them in Maine for several years, then they just closed them all up 2 weeks before last Christmas. Americans don’t seem to like them and prefer Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks for whatever reason.
I think KK would have been alright if they had not over-saturated. They opened too many stores when they were a novelty, and became to common. There’s a certain appeal when you have to -try- and drive further to get to something. Once it’s easily accessible, no more fun.
DD has sh*t donuts.
KK was one of the Southern-based franchises that some hipster marketer periodically latches onto and kicks off a too-much-too-fast expansion boom. Cookout is probably the most recent example; shouldn’t be long until someone complains about the Bible verses on the cups.
Haven’t heard of that one yet. But I’ll need to go to a safe space if my Coke Zero features verses from Leviticus.
In 2006 I had some Krispy Kreme’s in the Bullring Shopping Center in Birmingham….England.
The hot ones are like taking a bite of a baby angel.

OK. This will get me booted out of Canada. At first I thought it was just me but then other people started furtively telling me the same thing: Tims coffee isn’t as good as it once was. It’s less rich and more bitter tasting than it used to be and I blame Burger King.
I don’t know, are there that many people who find Tims palatable unless you get it double-double? It’s awful swill if you drink it black (although I haven’t been drinking coffee long enough to say if it’s gotten worse or not).
Everything Tim’s is crap. You can’t even find a goddamn donut there after 8pm.
I’m a man but I can change, if I have to, I guess.

Canadian = pay more get less choice. They don’t wave the maple in Quebec and First Nations have red flags of their own.
This is also Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. It’s meant to commemorate the battles fought by men from those places in WWI. And we mustn’t forget, today is the centenary of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. Nearly 20,000 killed in one day among the British forces alone, to include nearly 100% casualties among the Newfoundland Regiment.

I became really fond of Creemore Springs and other small craft breweries when I lived in Toronto. The freshness of those brews was phenomenal.

Looks like your best bet is to try and track down some Dieu du Ciel (because I like my beers impenetrably dark, I like their Peche Mortel) or Unibroue. I mean, we have plenty of solid microbrews, but those two at least look to be available in Australia.

I’ll buy some when I go out to vote. We are having a Federal Election. I’m hoping the Liberal Party Coalition will take out the Labor Party (Funny spelling for Labour).
We can bet on elections in Australia at our betting agencies. The odds for a Liberal Party victory have improved markedly.
One thing great about Australia is you bet on most anything legally. So go to the election, then place a bet on who you voted for!

I know calling it “Canadian Bacon” is mostly for our US friends, but still – you know as well as I that no such thing exists here.
OK AMERICANS: Here’s your yearly bacon lesson!
Firstly, what you call bacon – we call.. bacon! That’s right, we eat the same bacon.
What you call Canadian Bacon, which is wet-cured port tenderloin.. we don’t really have here. It’s what goes into our ham. It’s ham. Just call it ham.
We also have wet-cured pork backs, rolled in cornmeal. We call this “Peameal bacon”, even though it’s not in peameal anymore. It’s delicious and much healthier than bacon. It’s the closest thing we have to “Canadian bacon”.
There you go! When you hear “Canadian bacon”, think either ham, or, a hilarious movie. But don’t think of what Canadians eat as bacon. ;)
