Some rules are meant to be broken, but not if they’re printed on a sign at the entrance to a wild animal enclosure. Follow those rules.
A Chinese woman was killed by a Siberian tiger in a Beijing animal park this past weekend after she left her vehicle to save her daughter, who was almost instantly mauled after leaving the vehicle seconds earlier.
According to the New York Times, the woman who first left the vehicle may have been arguing with her husband. In a security camera video of the attack, the women leaves the passenger side of the vehicle, walks around to the driver’s side, and speaks to her husband through his partially opened door.
Within seconds, the woman is attacked and dragged off by a tiger. Her husband and mother give chase. While the woman survived the attack, her mother was killed by another tiger while fighting the first one.
Badaling Wildlife World safari park has a bad history of deadly attacks. The NYT report states that an employee was killed by an elephant in March, and a security guard was killed by a tiger in 2014. Seven years ago, a young man was killed after using the park as a shortcut.
Unless the only threat in the animal enclosure is the risk of soft, cuddly and affectionate creatures rubbing against your unprotected ankles, never leave your vehicle in one of these parks.

That tiger didn’t go crazy.
That tiger went TIGER.
“Crazy” was when the tiger was riding around on a unicycle with a Hitler helmet on.
O LAAAAAWD I’m a crazy tiger…
Maybe tigers are crazy for Chinese food?
Tigers love the taste of that fresh squeezed human. Mmmhmm.
Donald Sutherland:
“Pure, refreshing Simply Human. It doesn’t get any better.”
Homan, the other white meat.
Too many people, not enough tigers. Everyone in China should go there.
it was funnier when Chris Rock said it.
I believe that this is called ‘natural selection’. The tiger merely fulfilled its function by singling out and preying on the weakest member of the group.
Friends once had their FJ Cruisers’ side mirror chewed off by a brown bear there.
Wouldn’t take my family there ever.
BTSR…I cannot believe you of all people missed the real crux of this article/video….Another Hellcat kill from a dig. PAW wheel drive ftw!
I’m trying.
I’m trying really hard not to let fly with a ton of capitalized Hellcat remarks.
Is this what the world wants from me?
Mr. Hyde?
Hellcat – 1
Chinese laundry lady – 0
BTSR – You’re doing great. Just skip your bowl of frosted flakes.
BTSR…they just released the lady’s name…Day Wu.
Hellcat – 1
Day Wu – 0
These Hellcats…they’ll run anything!!!!
BTSR, these people should be charging you rent, because you apparently live inside their heads. TTAC’s latest game of people making lame Hellcat jokes because BTSR has finally dropped the subject is getting old.
“Within seconds, the woman is attacked and dragged off by a tiger. Her husband and mother give chase. While the woman survived the attack, her mother was killed by another tiger while fighting the first one.”
Ok, I have to say it. “Clever girl…”
“Nature will find a way”….
Darwin at work.
Not to crack wise since it is a lousy situation, but… Darwin Dar-lost this one, the mom of the idiot is the one who died. The idiot not only lived but according the the infallible Daily Mail has already reproduced.
People throw out Darwinism like it explains much.
garuda,
I think we who do this also see a little of themselves and I do believe it is a defensive response.
Most everyone has done something foolhardy in their lives that has placed themselves at risk.
“Not to crack wise since it is a lousy situation, but… Darwin Dar-lost this one, the mom of the idiot is the one who died. The idiot not only lived but according the the infallible Daily Mail has already reproduced.”
That means you don’t understand what Darwin was saying.
You don’t get to judge whether an individual (or her genes) are fit for survival or not. It’s the end result that matters.
“We should have put locks on the vehicle doors” comes to mind as the correct quote.
And yes I know that is not the exact line word for word.
Too much Disney and not a damn bit of common sense. Wild animals are WILD.
cartunez – they have Disney in China?

First time I saw a real tiger at a zoo I was struck by some peculiar facts. First off, tigers are f***ing YUGE! The size of these things is astonishing. The second thing I found fascinating/terrifying was how quietly it moved. How the hell does something that big move so quietly? It really is nightmare stuff.
For truly f***ing YUGE, look up the lion/tiger cross called a ligon. Males are up to 12 feet, standing on hind legs, and half a ton. Only found in captivity and there are lots of ethical issues breeding them. Fortunately for us prey animals, the males are mules – sterile.
— Too much Disney and not a damn bit of common sense. Wild animals are WILD.
The tigers are not wild. They are raised “free range” in a larger (but not too large) zoo. All we can say is that tigers are tigers (even if not wild).
Is there no justice. Bieber got the finger wag from PETA last week for playing with Tigers. Too bad it wasn’t this set.
A sad thing indeed .

Nate, I have to say i find it really endearing that you sign your name at the bottom of your posts even though everyone knows full well you’re Nate because of your handle.
Hi Nick ;
.
It’s a matter of common courtesy to me .
.
I’m old and set in my ways , I don’t think it honest to write and not sign .

I wonder if the Tiger was still hungry 15 minutes later?
Best comment I’ve read all day…
ROFL!
Yes, very tasteful. Hopefully when you die some Chinese blogger makes an equally asinine comment about you.
Chinese blogger? Now that’s funny!
Bad kitty!!

Nothing new here. When I was a kid, there was a safari park near where we lived in Jersey. The place was called Jungle Habitat, and it was pretty much the same deal, you drove your car through a section of the park that contained dangerous animals not indigenous to New Jersey. One summer a New York City tourist hired a cab to take him to said safari park. While in the cab, a tiger strolled up to the window of the cab, and the rocket surgeon tourist proceeded to roll down the window. Had it not been for the quick reaction of the cab driver, the both of them would likely have been killed. To sum up, all the Chinese do is copy.
Racist much?
Wait, the “jokes” up thread don’t bother you, but mentioning the relative paucity of products designed in China and the lack of regard for intellectual property there is racist?
“Racist much?”
Well, speaking as a racist and, dare I say, something of a domain expert in the field I’m confident skor is not a racist. Or at least he’s not enough of one that I’d ever invite him over.
I’m sure his opinion of those pesky, overachieving branches of the Han people, Japanese and South Koreans, is quite different from his disdain for the Chinese.
OK, gotta respond to this:
The Han Chinese laid the basis for the success of the Japanese and South Koreans (you will find a lot of overlap in terms of culture, Confucian concepts like meritocracy, and even written language – to this day, the Japanese still use a lot of Chinese characters in their writing).
Taiwan and Hong Kong are probably a better representatives of “traditional” Chinese than the People’s Republic of China (Taiwan and Hong Kong were long-time members of the “Asian Tiger” economies, no pun intended).
I would argue that Communism, with its outright rejection of the educated class, the climax of which was the Cultural Revolution, was the major factor which derailed what had been a leading society/civilization for millennia.
Dai, indeed, your head is large of capacity and knowledge.
Would say that neo-Confucianism started the decline of the Han way before totalitarian Communism.
They were so distracted or absorbed amongst themselves they thought they had left the wild area and it was safe to get out.
I see what appears to be a park jeep quickly arriving. They need Charlton & the NRA running their safaris.
The fella trampled by the elephant was the park director.
Shades of Jurassic Park where the attraction kills the guests.
I learned not to f*ck with tigers when I saw a video of some guys trying to swim away from a tiger and then being drowned by said tiger. The lion gets all the image but the tiger is the true king of the cats.
Heck yeah. They’re bigger, better decorated, and with tigers.. you don’t even know when they are about to snack on your kidneys.
Still, cheetahs are the most royal of them all
Other car advice for the day:
-When parking next to the Grand Canyon, enjoy the view but don’t jump down into the canyon itself
-Don’t drive your car through the middle of a gunfight — you might get hit by a bullet and that can really hurt!
-If you see a large mushroom cloud exploding in the distance, don’t drive toward it
If the youtube link isn’t there, type in “monkey with AK47”.
I don’t think anyone is injured, but it gives you an idea regarding Darwin’s, Evolution of the Species.
“monkey with AK47”
That was fake.
I do think it’s terrible what occurred. The family will be shattered.
It all to easy to make fun and jokes, but it would be a life changing moment not just for them, but others in cars in front and following ……. most likely with kids as well.
Tragic, yes, but like Steph said: follow the damn rules.
It’s no different that seat belts. My SO works at a hospital and is constantly seeing fools who think they are above the laws of physics. And she only gets to see the ones who actually lived.
Neither the NYT article nor the Chinese “Legal Evening News” article referenced by the NYT makes any mention of the tiger(s) being destroyed as a result of this.
Not surprising, as the ultimate goal of these sanctuaries is probably breeding-up endangered animals for the illegal trade in skins and “aphrodisiac” material. Maybe a male would have been sacrificed to PR but females are too valuable?
The deeper you dig in China, the more maggots.
I find your assumptions are also that of a maggot. Neither paper made any statement about the purpose of this sanctuary either yet you jump in and condemn.
Yeah, that’s me before my morning smoothie.
Nevertheless, from the NYT article:
“Critics say such breeding programs do little to help wild populations and are sometimes used as cover for the illegal trade in animal parts, like tiger pelts and wine made from their bones.”
Plus this lucrative scam has been mentioned numerous times and timidly investigated by the English language “News China” magazine I’ve received for years.
You are contradicting yourself. If the ultimate goal is to get tiger skin and body parts, this is the perfect time to do so. They only need to declare that the tigers are put down. Why feed the tigers 3 more year for no further gain?
The tigers may not be put down because they are not wild animals and there won’t be further free range interaction with humans. They will probably go to some locked cage zoos.
I defer to your greater knowledge.
“Why feed the tigers 3 more year for no further gain?”
Especially impressive is your scoop on their using cloning rather than mommy/daddy tigers for procreation.
Never get out of the boat,
Never get out of the boat,
Never get out of the boat…
You’d think before she got out of the car (even with her obviously lapsed logical reasoning faculties) that she might look around and -see- the tiger which is no more than a few feet away.
The worst scars from this will be the emotional ones, knowing her mother died trying to protect her from her massive stupidity. Though the park may be blamed for prior bad events, this isn’t one where they should receive any.
And I honestly wonder how her thought process went beforehand. She was so mad at her husband that she felt she needed to stand up? Talking through the window is somehow better than next to him in the car? Of course both of these emotional worries trump the fact that there are WILD CARNIVORES IN THE VICINITY.
“When you’re being attacked by a lion, it doesn’t matter if you’re in a bungalow or a mansion, being attacked by a lion is the main thing.”
The tiger might seem completely harmless when the women left the car, like taking a nap or something. But the moment she turned her back towards the tiger, the big cat’s hunting instinct was triggered. There are several youtube videos demonstrating this. Some african farmers even paint fake eyes on their cows’ ass to prevent lion attack, because of the same reason.
And you think someone who threw a tantrum like this will feel guilty or responsible? I don’t think so. She will definitely blame her husband.
Insightful ejwu, the ones with raging bitch syndrome rarely blame themselves.
Hey… China’s left-hand drive! Let’s import cheap SUVs and pickups for seniors who’d sign an insurance waiver!
Don’t laugh at the tigers, show them your diamond heart.
Too bad that family wasn’t wearing the harness to float up to the treetops as in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Wires.
HT + SH = FT + DH
Hungry Tigers + Stupid Humans = Full Tigers + Dead Humans
