General Motors quickly deleted the power figures for its new 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 after they were posted to the GM Powertrain website, but we now have confirmation of the heavy-duty engine’s output.
TTAC’s Matthew Guy has just sent us the figures from the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, where GM is debuting its 2017 heavy duty pickups.
What are they? Exactly what GM sought to swipe from its website. 445 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 910 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. The engine sports the same dimensions as before — a 103 mm bore and 99 mm stroke — but makes significant power gains, mainly through use of a new turbocharger.
The previous Duramax generation made 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. With the boost, GM slots itself between the Ford Super Duty and Ram 2500 in terms of maximum torque.
GM’s diesel-powered 2017 heavy duty pickups sport a hood scoop designed to provide 60 percent of the air reaching the engine. The supply of cooler air benefits overall power output, while boosting performance in hot weather and under heavy loads.
The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD go on sale in early 2017.

….styled by Mr. Ugly.
I think these looks must be intended to transmit SUPREME GROUND POUNDING POWER, EXISTENTIAL THREAT TO LESSER BEINGS LIKE PRUIS AND LEAF, GIGANTIC INDOMINATIBILITY 18WHEELERWANNABE. With just about the same gravitas and believability as the current Presidential Election.
What has happened to pickemups? Especially the Murkin ones. The old C10, F100, early F150, and whatever International called theirs—righteous trucks. Now, its a race to the bottom of the aesthetics pond to produce a bloated Baroque look. Yow.
One of these days pickup styling will collapse in on itself, creating a black hole of macho filigree.
Until then, I’ll just look at pictures of GMT400 trucks, which had their functional issues (rust, horrible interiors) but are still the prettiest pickups ever built.
Hell, I’ve seen GMT-900s with more rust than my ’96.
Common over rear fenders. They’re not as bad as contemporary Dodges, but man.
Thank you. I feel that way about my 94 Silverado that I still have since new. I’m in the south so no rust, and my interior has held up great. Still no squeaks and rattles. The dash isn’t even cracked, unlike my 09 Silverado. The styling of these GMT 400’s has aged very well.
You lucky bastard.
Mine has little rust, but it’s starting on the bottom of the cab. Fenderwells are still rust-free, which is remarkable for a 20-yo northern truck.
The 2016 Silverado refresh only looks even passably good in black. The front end is such a mess of cutlines.
I remember circa. 2014 when people were complaining about the new Silverado’s grille, then later had the audacity to say this refresh is an improvement…
Im no expert but my high school arithmetic says that (functional?) ram-air hood scoop is easily 20 HP
Yes, but the non-functional ones that stick on with knock-off 3M tape provide at least 35whp for the small ones.
So if I put three of them on…
Man… the torque numbers of the new HD trucks is insane!!
Ram: Up to 900 lb/ft.
GM: Up to 910 lb/ft.
Ford: Up to 925 lb/ft.
Are they trying to disrupt the Earth’s rotation with all that torque?
No, like I said in the other article–they need all that torque to haul around that huge payload of air. Or the occasional horse trailer, I suppose. ;)
My SUV is more than sufficient for my current occasional towing needs, but I may have to buy the first one of these that breaks 1000lb/ft just for the hell of it.
Can’t find your ruler? Psst. Check inside Chevy design studio. I bet, if they could, they would make the tires square. Black is probably the best color for this monstrosity.
Yeah, but did you see those wheel arches? Square wheel arches look slightly “off” to my eye, but the real turn off is that the wheel arches reach up to nearly the same height as the hood and bed.
Overall, it looks like a padded suit. There’s something artificial and insincere about the look.
Trucks these days all have 4×4 stance. A generation or two ago you could drop them down to look right, but now you can’t even do that.
It has gotten nuts, bragging rights and all. 765 lb. ft. isnt enough for a decent bass boat, right? For 2018 the Air Haulers will need an even 1000.
Bass boat haulers buy a 1500 with the gas V8, mostly.
You do realize that there are people who actually pull 20+’ RVs or horse trailers, right?
Maybe you just never got on the freeway and thus never see them?
Because I see them all the time.
Oh my. That Silverado has seen some angry sass from the back of a Verano and is very unimpressed.
…from the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, where GM is debuting its 2017 heavy duty pickups.
Why? So they can do lap times? So they can run a 500 mile race? So they can take turns practicing pulling support trailers for NASCAR Teams?
Because deep in the heart of Texas; not to mention they will also appear at the Texas State Fair in nearby Dallas. I think most, if not all new pickups are revealed there; because Texas.
Texas is the centre of the universe when it comes to full sized pickup sales. (Unless you are BAFO – I`ll get my post deleted if I say where his centre is located )
But why Texas MOTOR SPEEDWAY specifically? Why not a ranch or something?
Duh, because it has a track and seating; unlike a ranch, that just has cactus and cows for seating. ;)
Why do so many of you hate large pick ups so much?
If I had the means, I think my car fleet would most certainly consist of:
– German/Italian Sports Car
– German Luxury Sedan
– Big 3 Pickup
These trucks (from light duty on up to HD Class) are as much about their capability as they are about how they make their owners feel.
Luxury cars dont need 600hp and trucks don’t need 900lb torque.
Personally, I think the big 3 truck designs are as intriguing as anything coming from any auto maker. They sell hundreds of thousands yet the style must remain fresh, appealing, and not copycat from one another.
“Why do so many of you hate large pick ups so much?”
Outliers and weirdos.
Short, sweet and right on. There is no finer, safer ride.
But it’s become too pricey for me as I won’t buy used.
“Why do so many of you hate large pick ups so much?”
Primitive hardwired survival instincts.
No one likes being the smallest critter in the herd.
I have to agree. An empty HD pickup going down the road is just as vacuous as a Nurburgring-tuned saloon doing the speed limit.
I just went to the “build a chevy” site. I built an HD 2500 , diesel , reg cab, 8 ft box, painted wheels, rubber mats, and the heavy duty trailer package. I have virtually no use for such a vehicle, but I’d sure like to have one.
And what did it cost?
*Dr Evil* One billion dollars!
Just under 52 K…Canadian ,full list. I figure factoring in my GM retiree discount, then adding in all the taxes, dealer prep, destination charges etc ? i would probably be looking at 58 K , out the door.
Yesterday, i priced Michelin winter tires, and OEM wheels {not steelies } ,for my Mustang. $2785.00 all in ,mounted and balanced..
Or a 58K…truck ???
Around here there are take off Mustang wheels all over Craigslist in good shape for as low as $100 a set for base model aluminum wheels though most are $300-$400.
The truck, is just” fantasy thinking ” on my part. The tires, on the other hand, are a must. The 3 season, original, Good Year eagles are truly frightening in 3 inches of snow.
I’m going to explore the after market. I just have to check with Ford Canada to see if after market/used will be warranty compliant.
GM needs to address the lighting issues on their vehicles. You rarely see a GM vehicle without a malfunctioning light and/or a burned-out light. I am speaking of NEWER vehicles.
Interesting comment. I remember some guy asking GM truck major domo Tom Stephens (long since retired I assume) exactly that question in an employee newsletter 15 years ago.
He blamed it on hyperactive alternators LOL.
Specifically, the voltage regulators were lowest-bidding-supplier garbage with lots of voltage spikes and line noise that trashed the junky OEM bulbs.
Why don’t they just make the engine bigger?
427 Duramax…mmm…
@NoGoYo – 427 has a nice ring to it. 7.0 doesn’t.
The grille is not GMs’ long suit aesthetically. Viewed from the front, Rams look the best. In profile, GMs, and from the rear, Fords. At least to my eyes.
How much does it weigh? These heavy diesels can greatly impact payload capacity.
“Diesel engines are heavier than gas engines and significantly reduce the available payload of most truck configurations. It’s amazing how hard the choice of gas or diesel hits you in the pocketbook and payload, right where it counts.”
http://www.truckcampermagazine.com/news/tcm-debuts-2013-chevy-silverado-3500/
You’re correct, but those that buy diesels are looking not at the payload, but the tow rating. Whether it’s a gas or diesel, half-ton or HD, most modern pickups are used less for hauling (in the bed) and more for towing (a trailer). Yes, they still have insane payload ratings (3000+ on a properly-equipped F-150?!), but the tow ratings have seen an even larger increase in the past 20 years.
More than RAM, but not as much as the Ford?
I don’t think GM understands how the Torque Wars work.
You’re supposed to UP THE ANTE.
They didn’t, so they FAILED (say this in Wallace Shawn’s voice).
Are you gonna be the new BTSR?
I feel like this was a missed opportunity for a cowl-induction hood. With a vacuum-operated flap.
