General Motors CEO Mary Barra was under consideration to be Hillary Clinton’s running mate. Barra’s name, along with the names of 39 other candidates for the vice presidency, were found in a hacked email released today by WikiLeaks.
It’s an interesting choice as Barra has never held any political office, though she was commended for her handling of GM’s ignition switch recall fiasco, which helped stem the tide of negative public perception toward GM.
Despite some business ties to General Motors, Clinton has no direct connections to Barra.
In February 2010, the General Motors Foundation announced a donation of 30 pickup trucks, valued at $684,455, to the Clinton Foundation. General Motors Corporation also contributed between $50,000 and $100,000 to Clinton’s Foundation directly. The democratic presidential nominee delivered a speech at a GM plant in Uzbekistan the following year. Clinton voted to approve the automotive bailout in 2008.
The leaked email, dated March 17 of this year, named Barra alongside other noteworthy business executives, including Michael Bloomberg, Bill Gates, and Apple’s Tim Cook.
It’s not known if Barra sought to be involved with Clinton’s campaign or was even aware of her inclusion on the list before it was leaked.

Opps! That’s allot of UAW members not in support of Hillary.
My body allots support to a member when I look at Mary!
Kenmore, you’re not the only one, pal. ;)
Yeah, let the feebs scoff.
She can be my boss anytime…
Yep, and I’m a tireless employee when the motivation’s there :-D
Oral reports would be my favorite.
Ah, right on schedule. A little bit of misogyny.
Oh, Schatzi, you ain’t seen misogeny yet like you will on an institutional scale if that coiffured thug gets elected.
You have no idea what lurks in the woodwork waiting for him to rip off all the trim.
Yeah, remember Hillary tweeting that all sexual assault survivors had a right to be believed? Took it down for some reason.
So? I like her voice.
But your mind makes a promise that your body can’t keep.
She was also group with the Gates, Tim Cook, Michael Bloomberg, and other Fortune 500 business leaders. None of them would have made any sense as VP but again, this is pretty normal stuff. Every campaign picks some business leaders to spitball about. I suspect it was designed to be the anti-trump card if she felt it necessary.
I would have preferred Sherrod Brown or Amy Klobuchar, Klobuchar is less liberal than Hillary was in the Senate but she has a powerful ally in Franken and in very liberal Minnesota. Brown was too risky with Kasich getting to name his replacement….But I can dream. Really, VPs are dead weight positions that serve little purpose unless you want a certain expertise on the ticket.
I am not sure it was even that serious. The intended privacy of the e-mail and the long list of names makes me feel like this was a first draft list. Sort of the notes of a meeting where everyone was asked to just blurt out the names of anyone they think might be good. Hence the long list.
Yeah, that was the extremely preliminaries, far too many people were on that list to be of any serious contention. As it was broken down Barra was probably in that group as a ‘if Trump is viewed as a competent businessman we’ll bring in our own’ and well….that fell apart quickly. So she went with Kaine who’s a solid center-left VP type.
@kenmore – ha ha. Reminds me of a spoof attack ad that occurred in Canada leading up to our last Federal Election.
Was it sexxay? Is there YouTube?
I’d certainly allot time for it!
Kenmore- spambot removed it. It is funny. Google: Justin Trudeau Attack Ad Parody
watch?v=Mb-1XiHGjtM
Got it! Thanks, great punch line!
That was really JT, wasn’t it? Flaunt it if you got it, babycakes.
@Kenmore – yup.
The kid is good at playing politics.
He challenged Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau to a charity boxing match. Brazeau was bigger and stronger with a history of martial arts training as well as a military reservist.
Trudeau at one time worked as a bouncer combined with being very fit. He TKO’s Brazeau.
Some pundits say this fight was his stepping stone to the front of the pack for the Liberal Party.
Your politics are more interesting than ours.
Kenmore – funny you say that. I see yours that way. Sort of like watching WWE.
Not news to anyone but it’s always so striking how much a calculating politician Clinton is. Her team narrowed it down to seven categories and no doubt group tested and polled the hell out of each of her seven strategic VP archetypes (Hispanic male politician, white female politician, white male politician, black male politician, white male ex-military, well-known business executive, or Bernie.) I guess generic white guy outperformed all the others and Tim Kaine was the best of his subgroup.
This is a good thing, no? I like a leader who carefully considers all of the options before making an important decision.
No doubt, the contrast in this area is especially pronounced this cycle.
Yes, had them all sorted, like food groups…

crunch crunch crunch crunch
Delicious popcorn.
As perhaps you’ve noticed, I, for one, have elected to choose the high road of common lechery versus the hoped for political rancor, thank you very much.
Me too! Politics is too much like work these days.
@ Oh yeah !…You put it far more more eloquently than I. Who cares about politics ?
In the eyes of this old boy ??? Mary is smoking hot, I felt the same way about Sarah Palin.
lots of companies make 50-100k donations to have some executives come to the annual meeting to network and make commitments.
A very passive voice was used by the article’s author.
And who would take her place?
I don’t think Mary Barra would be any worse than Tim Kaine, which I had more respect for before the VP debate. All he could do was interrupt Pence and attack attack. Maybe that was Kaine’s strategy but it was a complete turnoff. He was like the terrier who is constantly biting at your heals. I am not saying Trump’s conduct is excusable but it does not make it right to continue to be rude and constantly interrupting another person when it is their turn to speak. Barra probably would have been much more professional.
But anyone saying she became CEO of Government Motors (after being in Human Resources) purely for political reasons (Girl Power!) was smoking crack.
Wait a minute? Someone(s) broke into sensitive, private, emails. They possibly altered the emails and then released them to the public, in an attempt to influence a president election?
Where are we in our attempt to capture and punish these criminals?
Amazing that the theft of these emails is seemingly easy to do. And yes, we should do something about it. Maybe start with all SCADAs in Russia and shut down their electric grid. Two can play this game.
Funny how Russia so wants “crooked” Hillary to lose and woman abuser Trump to win….what is it about her that scares the Soviets, I mean Russia so much…
golden2husky – I suspect that when it comes to politics, Hillary is every bit as dangerous as Putin and the Russians know that.
My hat is tipped to you, sir.
From the Soviet POV, a psychopathic war criminal with a lengthy trail of corpses and now proven corruption is far more dangerous than a blowhard whose main qualification is I took a fortune and grew it.
That’s pretty much my perspective as well. Her apologists are as awful as she is.
Don’t mistake me for a Clinton (or Trump) apologist.
My ideology does not stop me from seeing the obvious.
On that note, Hi Todd.
Psychopatic war criminal with a lengthy trail of corpses? SMH
30 years of demonizing a pretty middle-of-the-road centrist democrat has left the US political discussion damaged beyond repair. Clinton derangement syndrome is even more severe than Obama derangement syndrome. A large part of the population is either unwilling or unable to differentiate between objective facts and discredited conspiracy BS.
Just imagine Clinton or Obama had several kids from three different spouses, they wouldn’t be even close to any political office. Or, another funny exercise, imagine a democrat today would propose setting up a federal agency like the EPA, just like Nixon did in the 70s. Conservatives would be taking up arms…
How do you preserve your ignorance Vega? Hillary’s crimes are well documented. Everything from manipulating pharmaceutical stock prices downward after short-selling them with her HillaryCare pronouncements, to ripping off retirees via Whitewater, to her miraculous cattle futures trading record, to the tape of her laughing at the 12 year old rape victim she brutalized on the stand, to her threats towards her husband’s rape victims, to her betrayal of her ambassador friend, to her clumsy coverup of her incompetence and lying to the families of her victims while telling her daughter the truth, to her using Haiti relief funds to enrich her cronies while depriving the Haitians, to her fleecing college students through her expensive speeches authorized by fellow-traveler campus radicals, to her astonishing death tolls of employees and former confidants, to her cleaning out Vince Foster’s office, to her Clinton Foundation/State Department influence peddling operation, her pathological lying every time she exhales, to her proven ties to voter fraud and dispatching violent democrats to Trump events. Her private email was just a necessary tool for leading her criminal enterprise, and you think she’s a victim of some sort of conspiracy? Ridiculous doesn’t scratch the surface.
meanwhile, the Bush II administration invaded a country under fraudulent pretenses which has:
-sacrificed the lives of thousands of servicemen
-flushed trillions of dollars down the drain
-destabilized the region to give rise to ISIS
-attempted to justify the use of torture
and you have the unmitigated gall to try to natter about “Hillary’s crimes.” The entire world will be dealing with the fallout from the unwarranted invasion of Iraq for decades.
JimZ,
Bush is not running for president this year, Hillary is.
It’s pretty obvious to the sentient that the Bushes, Obamas, and Clintons are all playing on the same team. Without Bush’s duplicity, there would be no President Obama. Bush could have allowed him to be vetted properly. Obama didn’t reduce spying on Americans, or dismantle the TSA, or roll back Bush’s executive power grabs. He and Hillary did make the worst of Bush’s war in Iraq, but Bush isn’t out trying to stop the madness.
I don’t care for Trump, but the idea of getting someone who isn’t just going to keep the secrets of the criminals who’ve been dismantling the rule of law for the last couple decades is worth exploring. Supporting more of the same because you love your cage is just the most pathetic thing I can think of.
Or, maybe they think that Trump would make it easy for Russia to increase their influence sphere in Europe significantly. You know, judging by what Trump has said about Nato that seems to be the most obvious reason.
“It’s pretty obvious to the sentient that the Bushes, Obamas, and Clintons are all playing on the same team.”
If that is the case why confine one’s disdain to just those on the left side of the isle?
Yes, many in political office regardless of political stripes all perform from the same playbook.
It costs a billion plus to become President. That means there are a lot of debts to pay along one’s term in office.
Let us hope… let us pray she doesn’t take shirtless horseback rides…
Putin knows that Trump can be manipulated through his vanity and inexperience. President Trump would erase our credibility and reputation among other nations. And Russia knows that Clinton is a seasoned pro at the diplomatic game. Now with Trump in his death spiral, Putin will be happy to watch him challenge the election’s validity, further lowering American morale and cohesion. You couldn’t build a better Russian tool, a “Useful Idiot,” than Trump. Just be sure to slap a GOP sticker on it- badge engineering at its best!
On the other hand, Putin has Hillary’s emails, and can threaten to expose all of the things she was trying to hide by conducting all of her business on her own server.
Either way, Russia is enjoying the Greek Tragedy playing out in the USA.
While I’m always please to gaze at Mary, I’m not exactly sure how this is news. Every general election season probably dozens of these lists are compiled and refined.
Thanks for the additional chance to gawk at her, but let’s find something newsworthy about GM.
Question: How much did Russia donate to the Clinton Foundation?
Answer : See the NY Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/24/us/cash-flowed-to-clinton-foundation-as-russians-pressed-for-control-of-uranium-company.html?_r=1
Oh which Clinton hadn’t the power to sign off on……So gonna try again or what?
Do you really think that Obama’s default successor had no influence to peddle? Is that your argument? Do you get a safe space to preserve your obtuse rejection of all empirical evidence of Hillary’s life spent enriching herself at the expense of this country and Haiti?
Yeaaaah…And Rod Blagoyavich wasn’t selling Senate seats either.
@Todd – at one time, political pundits used to refer to a “revolving door” between big business executives and political office.
During the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld era many of those same pundits stated that they contracted out the replacement of that revolving door. In its place, a golden archway.
No sense pretending or believing that it only exists on one side of the floor.
That is why there is so much displeasure about the current political system. We have a neo-liberal liberal on one side and an isolationistic businessman on the other side.
Why does the lower end of the Republican base supports Trump and the higher end doesn’t?
Same can be said for Hillary except the Democrats are much better at controlling the tendency to self destruct.
She doesn’t control the half-dozen regulatory agencies that oversee it nor does she have ‘influence’ to peddle with the Department of Defense and strategic nuclear resources. Sorry Todd, you’re slings and arrows don’t do a damn thing to me.
List of who else she had to apparently ‘peddle influence’ to:
Secretary of the Treasury
Secretary of Defense
Secretary of Justice
Secretary of Commerce
Secretary of Energy and Homeland Security
The head of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative
The head of the Office of Science and Technology Policy
It also had to pass the independent Nuclear Regulatory Commission as well as Utah’s nuclear regulator.
Never mind that most of this money came during 2008 or prior to the Foundation so by the time the sale occurred not all of these 9 members were part of the company.
So you see how quickly the argument falls apart on its face. I’m not even going to bother with going forward, you’re too ignorant and partisan to see how this stupidity has no traction.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/jun/30/donald-trump/donald-trump-inaccurately-suggests-clinton-got-pai/
HRC has problems like any candidate but when you make up BS and can’t see how stupid you are for it, well…You lose more.
PS: Stop being a jackass and you may get taken seriously.
The number of things that don’t mean anything to you is as vast as the world outside of George Soros’ script.
It’s ALWAYS follow the money with the Clinton crime family.
Well there is precedent…I mean Robert McNamara was pulled from Ford to serve as SECDEF and he did a bang up job with that whole Vietnam thing!
Yes, it’s my understanding McNamara had an excellent reputation before he got involved in the Viet Nam conflict. Which was stirred up by our own CIA, you might know.
It could have been great experience for Barra…she would learn a lot about covering up issues from Hillary.
Given Hill’s proclivities, I’d think she’d lean more toward Melody Lee than Mary Barra.
