Now that the hype train has pulled into the station and unloaded the Toyota Supra, we can finally begin to examine what all the fuss was about. Still, Toyota has one more minor announcement left up its sleeve. While we’ve frequently seen the coupe in black, white and red (or camouflage combination of the three), we didn’t actually know what shades the manufacturer would offer for its introductory year.
Launch Edition vehicles will continue to be relegated to the established trio of hues, adding red mirror caps, black 19-inch wheels, unique upholstery, carbon-fiber accenting, and commemorative plaques for $55,250. But other colors are coming — most of them silver.
Car and Driver recently tipped us off that Toyota has updated its website, digitally showcasing the upcoming GR Supra with eight additional color options. Beginning later this year, the sports car will be available in Downshift Blue (Navy), Nocturnal Black, Nitro Yellow, Absolute Zero White, Renaissance Red 2.0, and three versions of silver. Going from lightest to darkest, those chromic shades include Tungsten Silver, Phantom Matte Gray, and Turbulence Gray.
While not the most diverse range of colors, especially considering the Launch Edition reuses three of them, all of the obligatory sports car hues are there, starting at $49,990. It should be noted that Toyota affixes an “extra-color cost” to Nitro Yellow and Phantom Matte Gray.
Regardless of trim or color, all U.S.-spec’d Supras come equipped with a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six — producing 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque — bolted to an eight-speed automatic. Launch Edition cars (below) should start cropping up this spring, with less-expensive models arriving in the fall.

It’s the additional names of Nitro and Phantom to the colors that make it even more exciting.
I love the BMW Supra’s looks and I’m not even sports car kind of guy. I think they would have been smarter to offer it with a manual but I hope it’s successful.
I have to stop clicking on stories about this car. I am starting to feel physically ill when I see these body lines. Especially the hood and nose, where it comes to a point and … What was meant to happen there?
I’m sure it’ll be a fun car to drive and I like the looks of the interior, but I don’t see that exterior styling ever growing on me.
While I know a lot of people will buy them, I will not be one to buy silver, silver or silver. I’m not too happy with the choice of blue, either… much too dark. Unfortunately, Red and Yellow would be so eye-catching that you’d be unlikely to get away with even 5 over the limit. A paint color matching the interior, however…

Doubt it. Toyota will probably be smart enough not to commission too many, especially since it’s not all that profitable. Both it and the Z4 will be built by Magna Steyr in Austria, which is a popular site for low-volume-but-not-hand-built cars.
Even the suspension on the Supra has BMW tags.
I don’t dispute that this is a BMW product with Toyota styling and some Toyota tuning. It carries a BMW VIN and everything—it’s the same as how the Saab 9-2X was really a Subaru WRX with some more creature comforts.
That does not, however, automatically mean that it’s going to have a glut in inventory.

Toyota can sell anything. The Corolla, Camry, and RAV4 are the best selling vehicles in their class. It won’t be long until the Supra is the best selling car it’s class.
When there are only 30 Japanese left alive they’ll still be making that effing silver paint.

For the same money, the Tesla Model 3 Performance is the better car, and way better looking.
Only if you’re on your way to an appointment at Pearle Vision. I’d rather avoid driving a car that looks like a platypus with a stick up it’s butt. The model 3’s interior is great though

That matters not one bit to anyone interested in the Supra. This is a class of vehicle where people buy something because they want *that* car, not because of price. Something you Teslaphiles need to get through your heads.
And no, the Model 3 is *not* better looking, it looks like a duck which was stung on the lip by a hornet.

Totally agree. This rule seems to apply to most car buyers.
As for being a ‘Teslaphile’, yes and no. I think their CEO needs to go, and when it came right down to it, I chose to get a Hyundai instead of the Model 3. But I’m still generally a fan.
Better is a pretty broad swath. As it is a 2 seater sports car, I’ll assume things like handling and weight matter. The Supra is around 3400 pounds. The Tesla is 4100 pounds. For reference, my F150 Crew Cab is 4500. That matters if we are talking drivers cars. Then there is build quality. Toyotas is legendary. Tesla’s is, well not. The Tesla is a better electric car and maybe better on a drag strip…not really markets the Supra is chasing though I am sure the tuners will get one down a drag strip with jaste should you desire

I really like this car, but buying it will not satiate my need for validation from internet strangers so I’ll probably skip it.
It can’t be worse than the scorn received for daring to purchase a large pickup truck with leather seats and navigation.
I predict a life similar to that of the BRZ/86 for this thing, except smaller volume obviously and probably fewer years.
Difference is, the 86 is a sports car. This is a tinyturbo slushbox cruiser, even if perhaps -bruiser, dressed up to look like one.

Every market segment Toyota enters they find success. As GM and Ford shrink their carlines Toyota continues to expand. Unlike GM and Ford Toyota knows you cannot cut your way to success.
The peasants at GM and Ford look at envy at a shining structure in the hills among the clouds. Is it mount Olympus? No, it is just Toyota looking down at everyone else.
Every company’s bound to take a fall at some point. Toyota’s a colossus, but it’s definitely got feet of clay.
Toyota is bombing with their fuel cell cars (which they continue to double down on), they have no EVs to speak of, and the Prius is dying a slow death.
They are quite unprepared to compete in the BEV market, which is the only segment that is growing right now.

The Prius Prime was the second best selling thing with a plug for 2018 and it isn’t unlikely that in 2019 it’ll remain the best selling plug-in not wearing a Tesla badge.
I don’t see how Toyota is in a dire situation just because they lack a 200 unit/month EV right now.

All the vents. All the fake plastic vents. Why? WHY? For the fast/furious demo? What? Looks like attacked with machete wielding maniac and then wouldn’t heal properly. Ridiculous.
As much as I really hate the way this thing looks, I have read that most or all of the vents actually go through the body, but are blocked off for drag reasons on factory cars. If you want to use the vents, you can either cut out the middle of the plastic plates, or buy a special open vent frame.

yep. it’s not a knock against BMW, but Toyota, who apparently can’t make anything interesting without having another company do it for them. The company that made the Celica Turbo, MR2, (original) Supra, SC300/SC400 now has to let Subaru and BMW do the fun work for them.
I asked a former coworker who would buy BMW quality and engineering with a Toyota badge. It seems like a non-starter to me. He told me his father has purchased a spot on the waiting list at his local dealer. I’ve never known his father to own a Toyota, but he has two BMWs and two Mazdas at any given time. His wife drives a Honda. I still don’t understand.
