Our speculation was at least half correct. The upcoming Genesis GV80 crossover will indeed boast an uplevel four-cylinder base engine, the premium marque revealed Tuesday night, but the most potent of the anticipated powerplants will see a boost in displacement.
Genesis filled in the blanks at an event in Miami, saying its first crossover model will make use of an engine bound for the Hyundai Sonata N-Line and an upgrade mill with more horsepower than before.
That base engine is the automaker’s new turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, good for 290 horsepower and 310 lb-ft in Sonata N-Line spec. Genesis didn’t reveal power figures for the GV80, Car and Driver reports.
Buyers seeking more oomph under the hood of their midsize CUV can opt for a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 that tops the brand’s familiar 3.3L mill by 10 hp (375 versus 365). A torque figure wasn’t forthcoming, though one can expect a modest bump from the 3.3L’s 376 lb-ft. Both engines send power to either the rear or all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic.

As the GV80 borrows the upgraded platform of the next-generation G80 sedan, you’ll likely see these mills appear in that model, too.
Genesis aims to find buyers in the hot premium CUV market by undercutting German competitors on price, offering niceties like active noise cancellation, a 14.5-inch split-screen infotainment system, and swaths of quilted leather. An upscale design that signals the model’s lofty status should help attract visitors to the dealer.
As for cost, that’s still a mystery, though Car and Driver claims a base GV80 should retail for about $50,000, rising to $65k for an all-wheel drive V6 model. Detailed pricing will land closer to the model’s summer on-sale date.

I was hoping the 3.5T would be around 400/400. Their current V6T output is fine but the competition is stepping up their 6-cylinder game so H/K need to as well.
Maybe it will be higher when installed in the cars?
I did a little more research on the 3.5TT. Looks like it is set to be rated at 375hp/390lbft in every application. I still think that’s a little low compared to the last German revisions, but hopefully they’ll keep the pricing low enough to make up for it.
The displacement bump is from increasing the stroke (bore is the same as the 3.3.L) and the power curve looks the same as the current 3.3TT, which is kind of disappointing because I was hoping they’d give the sportier cars using this engine a little more top end.
On the plus side it is getting dual injection and an air-to-water intercooler. Both of which should give improvements over the 3.3TT.
The 3.5T is capable of producing more than 400HP, but automakers usually go for less HP in favor of more torque when tuning an engine for CUV/SUV-duty.
In addition, they’re likely saving some power for whenever they do a Sport variant of the GV80.
I would say “yuck” but I expect no less of Hyundai to put turbo mess in their vehicles.
Don’t worry…nobody is going to park it on your lawn.
I realize this confirms my 70+ age viewpoint but that rig in the dark green paint looks quite attractive. Especially the 3/4 rear view.
Looks better that the corresponding Bentley, for what it’s worth….
I’m in love with that green paint, but then I shed a tear when GM cancelled that emerald green hue they were putting on almost everything in the 90s. I desperately wanted a Mid 90s Bonneville in that shade of green.
RE: The press photo of the big green barge in the desert.
Has Genesis marketing dept. made an intentionally joke-y, or real gaffe showing this thing throwing some roosts. Who on earth is going sideways in the desert with one of these things? These things are grocery getters for the faux-posh posers amongst us, not tweedy off-road enthusiasts!
Nice Q5.
(I’m not even kidding, I thought of the Q5 the second I saw it, though the last bit of window is at least different.
And I’m not complaining, any more than I think it was dumb of Lexus to copy the S-class for the LS for so long; the Audis look good, and Hyundai is wise to go German in their looks.
Beats copying the RX.)
Looks little like the Q5.
Shape of the headlights, taillights, grille, greenhouse and hood are different.
I know it’s early but I think this SUV is going to be a hit. The early reviews show an interior that looks so much more premium than Cadillac, Lincoln , Acura, Lexus and even the Germans. If the Pallisade and Telluride are any indication this thing is going to be really nice. I’m hoping the turbo 6 will migrate to the Telluride since I would prefer the more roomy three row over this but I think this is going to put Genesis on the map for real.
Don’t know if the interior is more premium than the Germans, but the dash (would have done some things differently) is certainly more aesthetically pleasing than the latest BMW dash design which is simply awful.
No chance of seeing the TTV6 in the Palisade or Telluride, but we may eventually see the 2.5T.
That green is gorgeous.
Why Jaguar doesn’t offer it on every vehicle is beyond me.
This is one vehicle that video transforms. Flat pictures do not do this vehicle justice. It has fine detailing but you have to look for it. Cadihack could learn a few things since even Hyundai and Kia already build more luxurious products than Cadihack does.
An interesting luxury SUV. The interior is stunning and the design cues remind me of an Audi interior that fused with a Bentley interior.
These turbo four bangers are the ass cancer of the automotive industry. I doubt any of them will last beyond 100K miles without major problems.
Give me that paint color with the 2.5 turbo and manual trans in the G70. :-)
