Carlos Ghosn’s escape from Japan seemed an epic affair, but the man who was reportedly smuggled out of the country in a musical instrument case by mercenaries posing as a Gregorian band wants to make one thing clear.
The former Renault CEO and Nissan chairman added to the story via a statement released Thursday.
As reported by CNBC, Ghosn claims his wife had nothing to do with the hiring of the ex-special forces members or the plotting of his escape from Japanese house arrest. Earlier media reports stated that Carole Ghosn orchestrated the clandestine op.
“All such speculation is inaccurate and false,” Ghosn said of those reports. “I alone arranged for my departure. My family had no role whatsoever.”
While this statement could be seen as a way of preventing legal trouble from landing on the doorstep of family members, given the criminal nature of his escape, that’s also speculation. As it stands, Lebanon has received a warrant for Ghosn’s arrest from Interpol.
Reportedly, Ghosn made the decision to become a fugitive from justice (or injustice, as Ghosn claims) after hearing that one of two trials scheduled in Japan was pushed back to April of 2021. That, plus the lack of contact with his wife, forced the former auto executive’s hand.
Just how Ghosn managed to single-handedly orchestrate such an elaborate escape to Lebanon, via Turkey, is an question Ghosn will have to answer. Under his bail conditions, the former auto giant was barred from accessing the internet and his phone records were regularly checked. The Tokyo home in which he was interred was under constant surveillance, hence the need for the Gregorian band ruse.
In addition to the escape, which Japanese authorities would very much like him to answer for, Ghosn is charged with several alleged crimes pertaining to income reporting and breach of trust.

It appears one is trying to protect the other; but which is which?

Has Netflix, Disney+ or AppleTV grabbed the movie rights yet?
I’d watch it. This is pretty interesting real life stuff. When has there ever been a movie of international espionage involving a automotive CEO?
I’m thinking Antonio Banderas as the leading man…? Don’t know what the wife looks like, though.
After a wild chase through neon-lit Tokyo, crashing more Kei cars than a Jason Bourne movie… cut to Japanese cops in their Toyota Coronas futilely chasing down a sleek white Gulfstream down the runway on some impossibly picturesque airport somewhere in Hokkaido.
It would be a boring movie- but Carlos looks just like Mr. Bean. Only Mr. Bean can bring Carlos to life.

So like Limp Bizkit, he did it for the nookie.
(I don’t know if the author meant for that last sentence to sound so dirty)
I know, right? If he had broken free to get to his hot mistress we’d understand, but his wife? ;-)
So how small is this guy? Did he sneak out in a bass fiddle case or was the kettle drum a recent addition to the ensemble?
Are there any nice places left to live in Lebanon? The only pictures I’ve seen make the whole place look like Fallujah.
How do they say sajonara in Japan?
“Smell ya later.”
Adios Carlos
They smuggled him out in one of the Jatco transmission crates. There are so many replacement Nissan CVT transmissions being exported that the police would never be able to find him.
Good move Carlito. Japanese [so called] “justice” system sucks. They would find you guilty because they had an order to find you guilty.
I think the only real thing we can complain about him is that he used the internet – he impersonated on of Hillary Clinton’s 33k missing emails. Only he has been found.
If it was a Hollywood movie he would be greeted as a hero escaping from the hands of corrupted Government officials. And then being former US army ranger he would kill them all one by one.
Casey Ryback portrayed by Steven Seagull?
yeah, Seagull would be great as a Carlito Ghosn. Will give him some substance.
Presumably, the SEC press release detailing his sins, where old Carlos paid up a million without a plea for being a naughty boy, and was forbidden to be the CEO or on the Board of Directors of a public company for five years, is near enough the truth. No doubt he felt the Japanese should give him the same sweet deal. But faced with being stuck forever in Tokyo while the police take their own sweet time to unravel his past personal dealings, he decided to scarper. Oh well, there still remains a very upscale part of Beirut for the moneyed to swan about in. Not a bad retirement compared to having the Japanese eviscerate him for sh*ts and giggles over years. Of course, he is a crook if he felt it necessary to pay the SEC fine. At least the $140 million he gerrymandered to be hid and to be his future pay was never actually paid out. So that’s a lot of Versa profits that won’t have to be recovered. Meanwhile, hands up all those who see a nice new Nissan in their immediate future. Man, what a lineup to choose from! Make mine a Kix for $800, Alex.
Maybe Carlos should call Best Quality Vacuum and ask for a new dust filter for a Hoover MaxExtract PressurePro model 60
Japanese probably don’t mind Carlos being gone. It spares them the embarrassment of trial and detention of Ghosn. They achieved their objective: Ghosn is gone, has nothing to do with Nissan corp anymore.
Ghosn tells Japan to pound sand by Ghosting….
