The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado HD is getting upgraded – including a bump in max towing capacity.
The maximum towing capacity has jumped 500 pounds to up to 36,000 pounds. That’s on the 3500 HD Work Truck with a regular-cab configuration, dual wheels at the rear, two-wheel drive, the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel and10-speed automatic, and the Max Tow package.
The same new tech available on the light-duty Silverado that assists with trailering is now available. It includes a trailer-length indicator that helps the driver determine if other cars are present, a jack-knife alert that is meant to alert drivers before they jack-knife their trailer, a camera that can zoom in on the cargo bed, a system that helps guide a trailer hitch into place, camera guidelines to help when reversing up to a trailer, and a split view of the sides of the trailer while backing up.
Four special editions (Carhartt, Midnight, Z71 Sport, and Z71 Chrome will be available. All four will be available in late 2020 – production on the 2021 model started last month.
Additionally, some optional equipment will now be standard or available on lower-grade trims than before, and there are two more exterior paint colors available.

Seriously GM a Carhartt and Z71 Chrome edition? How much more tacky can trucks get? I used to be a GM-truck guy and had a couple of Z71’s (when they were tasteful and actually looked like 4×4’s), but have lost interest after the 2003 restyle.
I saw one of these HD’s yesterday and wondered how anyone could choose something that looked like that. Even the slab sided “no-style” Fords look better than this.
Rant over from a former truck guy.
CRT 4
Agreed.
“How much more tacky can trucks get?”
Don’t encourage them…
The “Brodozer” Edition with monster exhaust stacks, huge lift and 24 inch wheels.
They can easily get more tacky!
… And GM wonders why RAM is overtaking them on sales. That truck is even uglier than the previous iteration–and I thought that would be impossible!
That front end, what were they thinking (or smoking?), and that shark fin antenna on the front left corner of the cab roof always looks off to me on every GM truck I see it on.
Lectro
c mon man. They save 14″ of wire on the off center shark fin.
That s good for $0.004 savings per car.
(Can you imagine the savings on stuff you dont see? My nephew ‘s 2018 GMC 2500 diesel is endlessly in the shop. Every 2 3 months. He d go back to Ram but his dad runs the dealership)
LOL go back to a Ram! Two co-workers of mine have the new body style Rams and they spend more time in the shop being told they cannot duplicate the problem or parts are on endless back order than they do in their driveways. Saying a FCA product is better than a GM is like saying black is a better color than white.
@ponchoman49 my anecdotal evidence is at least as solid as yours (gleaned from talking with people at rv campgrounds) and the ram seems to have the fewest problems, particularly trip ending problems. So not going there with your color comparison, but ya I’d take that bet.
@ ponchoman49: Henry Ford said it best: “You can have any color you want, as long as it is black.”
Now, how about keeping politics and social prejudices out of this discussion? We’re talking about trucks, not racism.
Just one man’s opinion, but the least awful variant of this truck is the stripped-out Work Truck trim. It’s a fairly simple blacked-out grill on an (almost always) white truck – and it looks *okay*. All the higher trim levels strike me as ridiculously overwrought.
@eggsalad I completely agree- same goes for the 1500. I was put off by the Chevy’s looks at first but the ones with black grills really arent bad.
@ eggsalad and MrIcky, there are Carhartt seat covers available for the WT.
In particular what the head of styling smoked that morning before the final sign off?
Vulpine – agreed.
@ Vulpine
I think the point was that neither black nor white is a colour.
Phyllis Diller called, she said this truck makes her look too beautiful.
RIP Phyllis Diller.
And in other news, they’re still ugly.
To be fair, a big flat wall o’ steel like that on the front end would be great for plowing through mostly peaceful protestors on your way home from work. It keeps them from scuffing up the hood.
I prefer something low and sleek to scythe them off at the knees. But everyone has their own way of looking at this.
You’d hope that that were so but even the tallest of these death race front ends are made of aluminum foil and plastic and are barely strong enough for a stiff headwind.
The most pragmatic way to deal with Democrat roadblocks is to get out early enough in the day that they haven’t woken up yet.

Before their second latte from Starbucks (purveyors if inferior coffee for those who don’t know any better).
All that would be necessary to disperse them would be to jam all cell communications. I understand that they get the jimjams if they can’t text for more then five minutes.
@ Cicero and company. Yet I have a right to peacefully protest. Magna Carta and some documents based on that have set some precedents Perhaps if I was in a pin-stripe suit with my American flag button or my old military rank on my lapel some of you wouldn’t be so tempted to run me over. Kinda funny how that changes things
The way the front end and windshield are designed the driver wouldn’t see a miata or other low sporty car in front of them.
I think this thing should be called, “Unsafe At Any Speed.”
“wouldn’t see a miata or other low sporty car in front of them.”
Or a toddler.
Ironically, the big truck manufacturers seem to try to keep hood from blocking front visibility as much as possible. But, pickups don’t seem to bother with that.

Mary Barra to the GM truck designers–“Design a new full size truck so ugly that no one will buy it and the Government will give us another loan.” Dealers–“Doesn’t matter how ugly the new Silverado is people still seem to buy it.” GM striving to reach new lows.
Looks are much less important in this class. It’s a little painful to look at, but it gets better from the sides an back.
The interior is the biggest problem. Except for commercial users, the GM HD twins aren’t even on the list.
Enterprise does 50K mile leases, but only Ford and Ram HDs.
