I’ve long resisted being the kind of person who could have The Simpsons “old man yells at cloud” jpeg thrown at me. Figuratively speaking, of course, since you can’t really throw a jpeg.
My reaction to the announcement that the unveiling of the 2022 Honda Civic will take place on Twitch is dangerously close to putting me at risk of having that meme used against me. If I had a lawn, and you were on it, I might start to form the words “get off.”
Proving that I’m not totally out of touch, I know what Twitch is. I’ve even used it a time or two to watch my favorite sports-radio yakkers dish out hot sports takes. For those who don’t possess the level of knowledge I have, it’s a streaming service, mostly used to watch video gamers play video games. Fans of those gamers can even interact with them, and each other, live by chatting.
Honda will be using to showcase the next Civic on its Head2Head channel on Tuesday, November 17, starting at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. The wraps come off the car at 6:45 PST, and musical artist Cordae will be part of the proceedings. This is where I embarrass myself by admitting I don’t know who Cordae is, and I try to keep up with current music. I guess I was once with it, then they changed what “it” is. It will happen to you.
There will be two hosts, Rachel Seltzer and Monster DFace (I know, I know) and four Fortnite players who are considered top performers, along with four popular Twitch streamers. These eight will duke it out in a game of or games of Fortnite (I’ve only played once, on mobile, so I don’t know how long games take). Honda will also have a presence on Reddit and Twitter among the communities of video-game players.
I’d love to tell you more about the car, but that’s all Honda has given us so far. Unless other news comes our way sooner, we’ll be tuning in with you.
Or is it Twitching? Is that a thing? Do the kids say that?
Hey, cloud, get off my lawn!

Well if Honda is cool with “Twitch” then Honda is cool with me
See, I’m down with all my fellow kids ;-)
I’ll be coming here to learn about the 22 Civic. Thanks for taking one for the team, Tim.
I can’t imagine that the Civic’s actual market (not the ‘target’ market) will be tuned in to Twitch. But wait, let’s remember that product reveals are for the media – not buyers.
Pretty sure a Fortnight lasts two weeks.

“it’s a streaming service”
OH!
“mostly used to watch video gamers play video games.”
oh….
Ajla, this is just further confirmation of Clown World.
I’m optimistic that the civic design cannot get any more harsh…but if the industry trend tells us anything the grill is going to be massive.
Actually, the Civic is supposed to soften up a bit. Which is generally the case with the Civic and Accord. An initial bold transition for one generation is followed by refining that design language for the next.
Here are some leaked patent drawings:

I’ve seen those Car and Driver images. Not bad but the new Civic looks like most Hondas always have: inoffensive. Perhaps that’s damning it with faint praise. But that’s quite an improvement over the current generation.
The entire car will be the grille. Possibly the Civic Baleen Edition.
This has “upper management” written all over it.
OnlyFans?

And all under 18.
There’s a town I know
Where the hipsters go
Called Bedrock…twitch! twitch!
If only Lux Interior covered this.
How do you do, fellow gamers and car enthusiasts?
So this means that Acura ILX is now two versions behind the Civic?
Nine months ago, I had never heard of Zoom. I had no reason to know such products, as Zoom had/has no applicability to my world. Now Zoom is a household word. Twitch is a new thing for me as well, with no connection to anything in my orbit.
Fun political tie-in, without saying a word.
Now that we’ve broken that fourth wall– This is a totally organic offshoot of our current YouTube/content consumptive culture. We’re going to see a lot more of this stuff.
My 7 year-old Niece introduces tiny home video snapshots and always welcomes ‘you guys’ to join. Its flippin’ hilarious.
I know kids are Honda’s target and preferred customer, but hopefully for 2022 they come up with something that adults aren’t embarrassed to be seen in.
From the spy shots I’ve seen on auto enthusiast sites, it seems more conservative to me.
is this the car they are talking about?

If so, that would be nice. I’m no fan of today’s science fiction version.

#youth
#influencers
1. Good god this event sounds awful, and teens who play Fortnite don’t buy new cars.
2. I wonder if this means the *long overdue* death of the half-hearted ILX, which will now be a full two generations removed from the current Civic.
I realize the auto oems have always played “youth” in most of their models in order to sell it to… I guess me at this point. Here’s the thing though, if I have no idea who the **** these people are how am I going to know to buy it?
If this is is the start of a trend, then I’ll look forward to seeing the 2022 Kia Sportage’s reveal on Crunchyroll.
Honda is trying way too hard to be cool to that demographic. Seriously, why not just concurrently live stream it on YouTube for the rest of the world who has no interest in using Twitch?
“Twitch” Is that something that happens after too many Tweets on Twitter? :-)
I think it’s brilliant. Since auto shows are dead and Honda needs to pull the wraps off a new Civic why not? Right now Twitch is seeing some high growth. Higher viewership than CNN. Closing in on ESPN.
I’ve never used it but seen my 20 something son and all his friends use it for years now. Anyone under 30 probably knows exactly what Twitch is. They have the money for a Civic.
