It’s deja vu all over again.
After we managed to squeeze a few auto shows — Chicago, Detroit/Motor Bella, and Los Angeles — in during 2021, we’re back in a place of scheduling uncertainty and possible event cancellations due to the rise of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Yes, it’s true that we still are learning about Omicron, and there are some reports that it may be milder than Delta, but it also appears to be far more transmissible, and even if a small percentage of folks get severe disease, well a small percent of a very large number ends up being a large number.
More to the point of this piece — auto shows aren’t exempt from local restrictions. With Ontario putting out provincial restrictions that cap indoor venues that can hold more than 1,000 people to 50 percent capacity — and not giving the restrictions an end date as of now — it was likely easier, from a logistics standpoint, for the show to shut it all down now, before any automaker committed resources to building a booth/stand and started shipping cars.
“It is with great regret that we have to make this announcement, but the health and wellbeing of our community needs to be our first priority,” Jason Campbell, General Manager of the Canadian International AutoShow, said in a statement. “What has been clear over the past few months in our discussions with our consumers and our manufacturer partners is how much they all value our in-person live AutoShow event experience, and how hungry they all were for it to return.
“We had been working hard in recent months for the AutoShow to return in a big way, but in light of the recent developments, and in consultation and agreement with our manufacturer and sponsor partners, we have agreed that it’s best to set 2022 plans aside to best support the health and safety of our community. We want to thank all of our AutoShow partners, sponsors, exhibitors and consumers for their interest in coming back in 2022, but can assure them we’ll be back bigger than ever in 2023 for what will be our 50th year.”
Toronto was slated to take place later in February than the Chicago Auto Show, but as of now both that show and January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas are still on.
This is a reminder to get vaccinated if you haven’t done so and to get boosted if you’re vaccinated and haven’t done so. Before you accuse me of getting political, let me just say that I’m not being political when I recommend you get a vaccine that’s safer than COVID and effective against severe disease, if not always against infection. It’s no more political than if I told you to put a band-aid on a bleeding cut.
Hopefully, between continued mask-wearing, more vaccination, boosting, and the advent of anti-viral pills, this show will be the last to be binned.

Meanwhile, Biden flapped his mouth about Trump’s travel ban from China as xenophobic and racist.
Now more have died under his watch than under Trump as well. He and his staff have no answers, either.
As big a buffoon Trump was — Biden’s worse. Far worse.
The Senate sub-committee releases its report claiming that the former guy focused on getting re-elected at the expense of the lives/health of American citizens.
The Select Subcommittee has uncovered extensive evidence of widespread political interference that degraded every major facet of the Trump Administration’s public health response. Among other findings, the Select Subcommittee has obtained evidence showing that Trump Administration officials:
1. Blocked CDC Briefings and Media Appearances
2. Sought to Sidestep CDC in Finalizing Guidance
3. Purposefully Weakened CDC’s Testing Guidance
4. Instructed CDC Career Scientists to Destroy Evidence of Political Interference
5. Pressured the Food and Drug Administration to Authorize Ineffective Coronavirus Treatments
6. Neglected the Pandemic Response to Focus on the 2020 Election
7. Failed to Heed Warnings and Acquire Critical Supplies in the Earliest Months of the Crisis
8. Exerted Unprecedented Political Interference in the Work of Scientific Experts

Fortunately, the Calgary Moose Show is an ongoing, outdoor event, and so will proceed on schedule.
“but can assure them we’ll be back bigger than ever in 2023”
Are we sure? Omicron is not the last letter in the alphabet. (The virus gets 9 more tries.)
All variants are Xi variants.
Yea, there won’t be an auto show in 2023.
I remember every automotive show issuing press releases saying how excited they were about coming back in 2021.
I like what Governor Polis here in Colorado recently said along this line: the emergency is over, he is done enacting restrictions, get your vaccine or take your risks.
Unpossible, that sounds like an adult speaking and we know none of them are in charge.
Have no fear, in true Polis political two step, he immediately issued a “statement of clarification” and stated further that local officials (unelected bureaucrats that take direct orders from the CO state health department run by Polis’ appointee) will be implementing mask mandates. Pass that buck!
Yeah, that’s fine – except for the selfish, non-vaccinated ‘patriots’ who choose to ‘take their risks’ yet still wind up clogging up the hospitals that the rest of us depend on to maintain a functioning society.
Now, if on the other hand we were to start turning away these risk-takers from emergency healthcare…I’d be more on board with that.
As we’re heard in plenty of other contexts: play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
@swester, I see that you have this all figured out. So you probably shouldn’t look at this:
https://nypost.com/2021/12/16/columbia-university-finds-omicron-vaccine-resistance/
@ToolGuy – the purpose of the vaccine isn’t to prevent everyone from catching it entirely, but to prevent hospitalization and death. So it IS working. Resistance to the vaccine is inevitable with mutations, but doesn’t invalidate the importance of them.
We arguably wouldn’t even have to deal with an omicron variant if vaccination rates worldwide had been higher, but that’s a whole other issue.
Swester, Are you a physician, epidemiologist, researcher or someone who has a medical background in virology? Or are you just repeating something you heard someone say and would like to believe?
I’m cool with turning them away. Additionally I’m all for them turning people away that choose not to purchase health insurance (which actually is in violation of the law) unless.they pay up front.
Of course of the Covid people can pay, I’m not sure what the fuss is over
“I like what Governor Polis here in Colorado recently said along this line: the emergency is over, he is done enacting restrictions, get your vaccine or take your risks.”
and don’t come to the hospitals. they’re for people who chose wisely/
“don’t come to the hospitals”
For once you say something accurate, don’t go to the hospitals because there is a very good chance they will kill you. There is some kind of protocol in use now with Remdesivir (the failed Ebola drug) and ventilators which nurses on video have said nearly always leads to patient deaths. If you want to enact a quiet genocide of social security and medicare recipients, that is a brilliant avenue to do so.
Canadian stupidity strikes again. It’s amazing how some large gatherings supposedly spread the very mild covid 19 and then others don’t. Must be that science they demand we trust.
“…the very mild covid 19”
I guess you don’t know anyone who has died from it.
Ignore the troll
@SCE to AUX No I don’t, because it has an extremely high survival rate. The worst symptom with Omicron is fatigue.
“I guess you don’t know anyone who has died from it.”
We’re almost two years into this guano show and it was only last week that I knew someone, WHO KNEW SOMEONE, who died of COVID. And I have plenty of relatives in their 70s and 80s.
I know anecdotes don’t prove anything, but the way we humans are wired, they have persuasive power.
EBFlex, it’s pretty much common knowledge at this point that politicians are not following science what so ever.
$cience.
28, This might be the shortest, most accurate comment ever left on this site.
Apparently Canada still thinks jamming your head deeply up your backside is still an effective way to deal with Wuhan’s mistake.
@MitchConner: Sorry to see your lifelong dream of attending the Toronto Autoshow has been shattered. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and we hope you soon recover from this traumatic experience.

Instead of continuing to cancel events and being afraid of living a normal life with the threats of vaccine mandates, mask mandates, and public health directors arbitrarily deciding what businesses can be allowed to remain open (as if you can’t contract the virus in a jammed Costco or Walmart) looming over us — how about getting the elderly and those with health issues vaccinated while taking additional precautions to protect them — while everyone else goes about their business?
Yes, there’s risk involved in contracting Covid by going about your daily life. There’s also risk in driving to work, climbing ladders, hanging Christmas lights, cleaning the leaves out of your gutters, and millions of other things. You could get hit by a bus or a plane could crash into your house. Does that mean you should live in a hole in the ground wearing a bubble wrap suit for the rest of your life? Or were you one of those kids whose parents wouldn’t let you go on a jungle gym or ride a skateboard because you might get hurt? If you were, then you were denied a full childhood — and have a warped sense of security as a result.
As for those who aren’t getting vaccinated, while the ignorant continue to point at Trump supporters and say dumb white rednecks in their trailers are to blame — the breakdown of data by ethnicity shows Asians at 77%, whites at 58%, Hispanics at 56%, and blacks at 51%. Since Hispanics and blacks vote for Democrats in droves — do you mind explaining why that fool in the White House has failed to connect with his strongest demographic supporting groups and persuade them to get stuck? Come on, smart guy, bring it.
At this point, cancelling an event out of fear for public safety is either cowardice or a lie to cover up a lack of ticket sales because millions of sheep are still too stupid to get out and enjoy themselves.
I don’t know. Never doing anything again sure seems like a good way to play it safe. I’ll never have a normal, fully realized life. But that’s a small price to pay for the illusion of safety.
“Nice LinkedIn profile pic, mcs:”
Shows what level of maturity you’re at.
“es, there’s risk involved in contracting Covid by going about your daily life. ”
Working at home mostly. Been vaccinated and I’m in good shape. What I do worry about is people that have higher risk factors than I do and my family members in healthcare that have to deal with them dying on a daily basis.
I’m into extreme sports and take a lot of chances, but I take precautions with helmets and protective gear. So far I’ve always been able to get myself to the ER on my own thanks to my gear. Like the protective gear in sports, I take precautions with my health by exercising, eating properly, and getting vaccines.
“At this point, cancelling an event out of fear for public safety is either cowardice”
It’s common sense, which apparently you lack. Who cares about an auto show anyway. Yeah, touching all those surfaces in or on the car. Like that’s a good idea. Oh, yeah, whiney little bithces like you miss them. So sad. You missed your little auto show. Did you want to sit in a car like the big boys do and pretend to drive? Vroom Vroom.
“There’s also risk in driving to work, ”
Mostly commute from home and the car has safety systems. Sort of like a vaccine for a vehicle. Good brakes. great tires etc. I suppose a big brake kit is cowardice. Be a man and go with bald tires.
“, climbing ladders, ”
Don’t do that, pay other people. But if I did, I’d make sure it was on a level surface and I’d wear proper footwear. Like vaccine for ladder climbing.
” hanging Christmas lights”
Don’t do that.
” a plane could crash into your house”
The yard and street are big enough for them to land safely and miss the house. But, not many planes fly over my house anyway.
“Or were you one of those kids whose parents wouldn’t let you go on a jungle gym or ride a skateboard because you might get hurt? If you were, then you were denied a full childhood — and have a warped sense of security as a result.”
Sounds like first-hand experience on your part. Sorry your parents did that to you. No wonder why you’re so dekcuf-up.
“or a lie to cover up a lack of ticket sales because millions of sheep are still too stupid to get out and enjoy themselves.”
Again, it’s really pathetic if you have to go to an auto show to enjoy yourself. Maybe you can hang on and wait until you see the latest subaru in traffic. I know, you’re dying to see the next sentra. Mommy, Mommy, guess what I saw at the auto show?
How does attacking someone with whom you disagree convince them that your way is better?
Seriously.
“Apparently Canada still thinks jamming your head deeply up your backside is still an effective way to deal with Wuhan’s mistake.”
Hey if it’s good enough for sleepy jo and nearly every democrat politician in the US then it’s good enough for Canada.
Or they could “follow the science” and do what Florida has done. Focus on the most at risk and treat those infected early. Naw, do it the Cuomo way. Kill 16,000 elderly just to avoid giving Trump any credit. You will get away scott free and only be pushed out of office by Dim voters for harassment.
The last thing we need to do is follow Florida’s lead with Covid…we already saw how that worked…Cuomo didn’t “kill” anyone, though his behavior was reprehensible and he paid the price for it, just as he should have. You want to blame anyone for not working to minimize covid deaths though, look no further than the Trump Administration. His politicization, denial, and manipulation of his disciples have allowed Covid to spread early on and still drives a not-insignificant portion of the population to refuse vaccination.
“Cuomo didn’t “kill” anyone”
Oh ok, we can charge him with manslaughter then.
“though his behavior was reprehensible and he paid the price for it, just as he should have”
His “reprehensible behavior” didn’t have anything to do with his, um, manslaughter. Like all Uniparty members, the dirt on him was exposed after someone gave the green light. Either they had enough of him or they wanted him out of the way.
“His politicization, denial, and manipulation of his disciples have allowed Covid to spread early on and still drives a not-insignificant portion of the population to refuse vaccination.”
Trumpo blew himself regularly for his “Operation Warp Speed” and AFAIK has never disavowed the “vaccine” – please correct me if he has. Unless you’re pushing 70 with comorbidities have fun with your enormous risk for nearly zero reward. Oh and be sure to get the 666 additional injections since they keep changing the definition of “fully vaccinated”. I hope you enjoy the SD/NKVD police state you are helping to implement.
In the internet age, trade shows are becoming passé anyway. There are plenty of other ways to check out what the various car manufacturers are planning.
As for concept cars, here’s what you can expect: Exaggeration of current styling trends: Make the wheels bigger, the windows smaller, the hood higher, the hatch more raked, and put more screens in the interior and more cameras on the exterior.
Canada can do what they think they need to do but I believe anyone expecting the COVID situation to be materially different in 2023 (or 2024) is just wish-casting.
Odd how all of a sudden those south of the 49th parallel are experts on Canada.
Canada’s COVID-19 death rate per million is 789. The USA death rate per million is 2,413. Florida’s death rate is close to the USA average.
@Lou_BC,
a) I haven’t said anything about Canada.
b) How much do you think population density plays into this? Serious question. (Population density is 9X higher in U.S.)
[We also have our share of dense people, but that’s a different metric.]
@ToolGuy – the bulk of Canada’s population live in major centre’s within 100 km of the USA border. We have higher per capita rates of COVID-19 and deaths in right-wing less urban/ less liberal regions. Those areas with higher rates line up with lower vaccine rates and less mask wearing.
Thank you sir.
I wonder if the more urban/ more liberal areas are ‘healthier’ in general. Just thinking out loud.
@ToolGuy – That is also a factor. There is a higher incidence of cigarette smoking in more rural less urbanized areas.
I have never smoked, but I have radon working for me. :-(
@ToolGuy – In Canada radon has surpassed smoking for the main cause of lung cancer. On a side note, HPV has surpassed smoking for a primary cause of oropharyngeal cancers. (Kirk Douglas for example)
The states with the highest covid deaths are:
1 – California
2 – Texas
3 – Florida
The state with the highest deaths over the last 7 days is New Jersey.
Not sure we can take much from any of that.
@jkross22 – with all due respect, you need to look at a per capita death rate or deaths per 100,000. If you look at deaths per 100,000 the worst three are:
1.North Dakota
2.Alaska
3.Tennessee
If you stratify your list by deaths per 100,000:
California = 43/50
Texas = 33/50
Florida = 17/50
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1109004/coronavirus-covid19-cases-rate-us-americans-by-state/
Research demonstrating that those electoral districts which Trump won also have much higher rates of death and hospitalization from COVID.
As to how to ‘handle’ COVID, the USA particularly under the former guy largely demonstrated what not to do. Death rates in the USA far exceed what they should have, if the federal government had acted in a more responsible manner.

I agree, but today we live in an era of pitting ‘my science’ against ‘your science’.
When people say “follow the science” today, they mean the science which aligns with their views.
@SCE; There is actual science which is peer reviewed and accepted by the vast majority of those with applicable advanced degrees. Then there is science denial, which takes various forms including a) refusal to accept ‘actual science’ b) denying the actual statistics/research often quoting invalid sources, c) accusing the ‘science’ of being part of a conspiracy/political plot, d) dismissing the science for ‘changing’ (which is a normal part of the scientific process). Unfortunately most of those who deny the actual science are from the far right and/or avowed Trump supporters.
Members of the GOP and/or the former guy could have put a stop to this and negated much of the politicization of this issue, by supporting the science and not denying the truth regarding COVID/the pandemic.
Conservative politicians in Ontario and the Federal Conservative Party have taken this approach. With a result that in Canada the COVID related death rates are far below those in the USA.
Arthur, communism was considered to be a science by communist party in USSR. We had “Scientific Communism” classes in Moscow University. Which was laughable, even for us. So you can declare anything “science” but it does not mean it is actually science. It may be just propaganda. You also have to make distinction between science, metaphysics, engineering and philosophy.
And we already know that Canada and European and Asian countries are superior to USA in most aspect so there is no need to mention it in every post.
The distinction was made ‘peer reviewed’ by people with ‘applicable advanced degrees’.
And now another study demonstrating that mask mandates reduce mortality rates.
https://www.ajpmonline.org/article/S0749-3797(21)00557-2/fulltext
As for the USA with the fall of the Soviet Empire the USA reigned supreme. China was still a non-factor economically and internationally. Unfortunately short sighted American government policies have resulted in the USA actually falling behind in terms of infant mortality, life expectancy, social mobility, etc. The political class in the USA is largely bereft of talent or morals. And the population has suffered from a dramatic decline in education levels/accomplishments. Depending upon a strong military without a stronger society to support it has proven time and again throughout history to be a losing strategy.
Scientific Communism was also “peer reviewed” in USSR and other communist countries. It nevertheless did not make it a science.
I recommend you to read this piece:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method. Simply put it:
Phenomenon -> Hypothesis -> Mathematical theory -> Calculated prediction -> Experimental confirmation or disproval.
E.g. I do not consider the String Theory a science. It is just a hypothesis and is not a theory. It cannot be confirmed or rejected by experiment. It is just a theoretical construct that have no relation to reality.
NPR, The Guardian and the NYT. Insert snarky comment here.
As for peer reviewed science, if you think that the peer review process is somehow as pure as the first virgin snow, you should be a bit more skeptical and less trusting.
The name of the game in the US has been regulatory capture for some time.

First thing that jumps out – democrats.coronavirus.house – says to me many facts will be of the alternative nature. Secondly I can’t seem to find an author(s) but I have noted Representative Clyburn (Chairman of the Subcommittee) mentioned 86 times in the 46 page document (nearly all in the references). This suggests his staff were likely the primary authors of the document, and given his background bias the credibility of the document drops to maybe 10% (if he were not the majority of the sources it wouldn’t drop so low)? This might have well been The World According to Jim since he personally/his staff is the primary source of information. From 41:
“These documents show that after FDA revoked its emergency use authorization (EUA) for hydroxychloroquine on June 15, 2020, Dr. Alexander repeatedly reached out to top Trump Administration officials to promote the drug as a treatment for coronavirus. For instance, on July 19, he wrote to Dr. Hahn and another top FDA official about a study purporting to show benefits of hydroxychloroquine when used in combination with other treatments. Dr. Alexander stated that he was sharing the study prior to publication, explaining, “I want to help the administration,” and complaining, “we are being fought by the other side and media which is horrendous.”29
On August 18, Dr. Alexander wrote to Mr. Caputo to chide Dr. Fauci for
publicly stating that there is a lack of evidence to indicate that hydroxychloroquine is an effective coronavirus treatment. Dr. Alexander wrote: “he is very wrong. He misspoke. He knows it.””
So Dr. Alexander, senior adviser to HHS, felt the FDA was wrong in stopping hydroxychloroquine use about June 2020. The Europeans did the same but by the end of the year it was being prescribed as a treatment again per this link:
https://www.nature.com/articles/d43978-020-00035-w
So the FDA *was* wrong, and I’m not sure what Fauci’s comments were but he’s been proven wrong many times so I’m sure he was wrong on this too. So while “the other side” as Dr. Alexander put it allowed an unknown number of deaths by NOT allowing hydroxychloroquine in the summer of 2020, Rep Clyburn’s staff want to argue Dr. Alexander’s repeated disagreements were evidence of: “Trump Administration political appointees attempted to exert pressure on the FDA to authorize ineffective coronavirus treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine and convalescent plasma, over the objections of career “scientists” [WHO WERE WRONG ABOUT HCQ]”. Sorry Jim, not today and if this is the bullsh!t you’re pitching it makes me wonder how full of lies your “report” actually is… but until you dig into the references, its not easy to refute these somewhat laughable claims.
I will say the references cited are *very* interesting reading and recommend them if truly interested in this stuff.
