It’s deja vu all over again.
After we managed to squeeze a few auto shows — Chicago, Detroit/Motor Bella, and Los Angeles — in during 2021, we’re back in a place of scheduling uncertainty and possible event cancellations due to the rise of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Yes, it’s true that we still are learning about Omicron, and there are some reports that it may be milder than Delta, but it also appears to be far more transmissible, and even if a small percentage of folks get severe disease, well a small percent of a very large number ends up being a large number.
More to the point of this piece — auto shows aren’t exempt from local restrictions. With Ontario putting out provincial restrictions that cap indoor venues that can hold more than 1,000 people to 50 percent capacity — and not giving the restrictions an end date as of now — it was likely easier, from a logistics standpoint, for the show to shut it all down now, before any automaker committed resources to building a booth/stand and started shipping cars.
“It is with great regret that we have to make this announcement, but the health and wellbeing of our community needs to be our first priority,” Jason Campbell, General Manager of the Canadian International AutoShow, said in a statement. “What has been clear over the past few months in our discussions with our consumers and our manufacturer partners is how much they all value our in-person live AutoShow event experience, and how hungry they all were for it to return.
“We had been working hard in recent months for the AutoShow to return in a big way, but in light of the recent developments, and in consultation and agreement with our manufacturer and sponsor partners, we have agreed that it’s best to set 2022 plans aside to best support the health and safety of our community. We want to thank all of our AutoShow partners, sponsors, exhibitors and consumers for their interest in coming back in 2022, but can assure them we’ll be back bigger than ever in 2023 for what will be our 50th year.”
Toronto was slated to take place later in February than the Chicago Auto Show, but as of now both that show and January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas are still on.
This is a reminder to get vaccinated if you haven’t done so and to get boosted if you’re vaccinated and haven’t done so. Before you accuse me of getting political, let me just say that I’m not being political when I recommend you get a vaccine that’s safer than COVID and effective against severe disease, if not always against infection. It’s no more political than if I told you to put a band-aid on a bleeding cut.
Hopefully, between continued mask-wearing, more vaccination, boosting, and the advent of anti-viral pills, this show will be the last to be binned.

@ToolGuy – the purpose of the vaccine isn’t to prevent everyone from catching it entirely, but to prevent hospitalization and death. So it IS working. Resistance to the vaccine is inevitable with mutations, but doesn’t invalidate the importance of them.
We arguably wouldn’t even have to deal with an omicron variant if vaccination rates worldwide had been higher, but that’s a whole other issue.

There is some kind of protocol in use now with Remdesivir (the failed Ebola drug) and ventilators which nurses on video have said nearly always leads to patient deaths. Instead of continuing to cancel events and being afraid of living a normal life with the threats of vaccine mandates, mask mandates, and public health directors arbitrarily deciding what businesses can be allowed to remain open (as if you can’t contract the virus in a jammed Costco or Walmart) looming over us — how about getting the elderly and those with health issues vaccinated while taking additional precautions to protect them — while everyone else goes about their business?
Yes, there’s risk involved in contracting Covid by going about your daily life. There’s also risk in driving to work, climbing ladders, hanging Christmas lights, cleaning the leaves out of your gutters, and millions of other things. You could get hit by a bus or a plane could crash into your house. Does that mean you should live in a hole in the ground wearing a bubble wrap suit for the rest of your life? Or were you one of those kids whose parents wouldn’t let you go on a jungle gym or ride a skateboard because you might get hurt? If you were, then you were denied a full childhood — and have a warped sense of security as a result.
As for those who aren’t getting vaccinated, while the ignorant continue to point at Trump supporters and say dumb white rednecks in their trailers are to blame — the breakdown of data by ethnicity shows Asians at 77%, whites at 58%, Hispanics at 56%, and blacks at 51%. Since Hispanics and blacks vote for Democrats in droves — do you mind explaining why that fool in the White House has failed to connect with his strongest demographic supporting groups and persuade them to get stuck? Come on, smart guy, bring it.
At this point, cancelling an event out of fear for public safety is either cowardice or a lie to cover up a lack of ticket sales because millions of sheep are still too stupid to get out and enjoy themselves.
I don’t know. Never doing anything again sure seems like a good way to play it safe. I’ll never have a normal, fully realized life. But that’s a small price to pay for the illusion of safety.

Working at home mostly. Been vaccinated and I’m in good shape. What I do worry about is people that have higher risk factors than I do and my family members in healthcare that have to deal with them dying on a daily basis.
I’m into extreme sports and take a lot of chances, but I take precautions with helmets and protective gear. So far I’ve always been able to get myself to the ER on my own thanks to my gear. Like the protective gear in sports, I take precautions with my health by exercising, eating properly, and getting vaccines.

In the internet age, trade shows are becoming passé anyway. There are plenty of other ways to check out what the various car manufacturers are planning.
As for concept cars, here’s what you can expect: Exaggeration of current styling trends: Make the wheels bigger, the windows smaller, the hood higher, the hatch more raked, and put more screens in the interior and more cameras on the exterior.
Canada can do what they think they need to do but I believe anyone expecting the COVID situation to be materially different in 2023 (or 2024) is just wish-casting.

Canada’s COVID-19 death rate per million is 789. The USA death rate per million is 2,413. Florida’s death rate is close to the USA average.

@ToolGuy – the bulk of Canada’s population live in major centre’s within 100 km of the USA border. We have higher per capita rates of COVID-19 and deaths in right-wing less urban/ less liberal regions. Those areas with higher rates line up with lower vaccine rates and less mask wearing.

When people say “follow the science” today, they mean the science which aligns with their views.
@SCE; There is actual science which is peer reviewed and accepted by the vast majority of those with applicable advanced degrees. Then there is science denial, which takes various forms including a) refusal to accept ‘actual science’ b) denying the actual statistics/research often quoting invalid sources, c) accusing the ‘science’ of being part of a conspiracy/political plot, d) dismissing the science for ‘changing’ (which is a normal part of the scientific process). Unfortunately most of those who deny the actual science are from the far right and/or avowed Trump supporters.
Members of the GOP and/or the former guy could have put a stop to this and negated much of the politicization of this issue, by supporting the science and not denying the truth regarding COVID/the pandemic.
Conservative politicians in Ontario and the Federal Conservative Party have taken this approach. With a result that in Canada the COVID related death rates are far below those in the USA.
Arthur, communism was considered to be a science by communist party in USSR. We had “Scientific Communism” classes in Moscow University. Which was laughable, even for us. So you can declare anything “science” but it does not mean it is actually science. It may be just propaganda. You also have to make distinction between science, metaphysics, engineering and philosophy.

As for the USA with the fall of the Soviet Empire the USA reigned supreme. China was still a non-factor economically and internationally. Unfortunately short sighted American government policies have resulted in the USA actually falling behind in terms of infant mortality, life expectancy, social mobility, etc. The political class in the USA is largely bereft of talent or morals. And the population has suffered from a dramatic decline in education levels/accomplishments. Depending upon a strong military without a stronger society to support it has proven time and again throughout history to be a losing strategy.

This suggests his staff were likely the primary authors of the document, and given his background bias the credibility of the document drops to maybe 10% (if he were not the majority of the sources it wouldn’t drop so low)? This might have well been The World According to Jim since he personally/his staff is the primary source of information. While there are a few interesting tidbits and some data which may be of interest, its use should mostly be for toilet paper.

So the FDA *was* wrong, and I’m not sure what Fauci’s comments were but he’s been proven wrong many times so I’m sure he was wrong on this too. So while “the other side” as Dr. Alexander put it allowed an unknown number of deaths by NOT allowing hydroxychloroquine in the summer of 2020, Rep Clyburn’s staff want to argue Dr. Alexander’s repeated disagreements were evidence of: “Trump Administration political appointees attempted to exert pressure on the FDA to authorize ineffective coronavirus treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine and convalescent plasma, over the objections of career “scientists” [WHO WERE WRONG ABOUT HCQ]”. I will say the references cited are *very* interesting reading and recommend them if truly interested in this stuff. It paints a nice picture of the events leading up to the Brandon coup, gov’t really did fight tooth and nail against Trump’s people. So Dr. Alexander, senior adviser to HHS, felt the FDA was wrong in stopping hydroxychloroquine use about June 2020. The Europeans did the same but by the end of the year it was being prescribed as a treatment again per this link:

So the FDA *was* wrong, and I’m not sure what Fauci’s comments were but he’s been proven wrong many times so I’m sure he was wrong on this too. So while “the other side” as Dr. Alexander put it allowed an unknown number of deaths by NOT allowing hydroxychloroquine in the summer of 2020, Rep Clyburn’s staff want to argue Dr. Alexander’s repeated disagreements were evidence of: “Trump Administration political appointees attempted to exert pressure on the FDA to authorize ineffective coronavirus treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine and convalescent plasma, over the objections of career “scientists” [WHO WERE WRONG ABOUT HCQ]”. Sorry Jim, not today and if this is the bullsh!t you’re pitching it makes me wonder how full of lies your “report” actually is… but until you dig into the references, its not easy to refute these somewhat laughable claims.
I will say the references cited are *very* interesting reading and recommend them if truly interested in this stuff. It paints a nice picture of the events leading up to the Brandon coup, gov’t really did fight tooth and nail against Trump’s people. If they were buffoons then they were right to do so, but I don’t think they all were just by examining that reference. But don’t expect State Media to inform you of actual facts.
