General Motors is looking into using artificial intelligence — AI — as part of its vehicle-inspection process.
GM has made an investment in Israeli startup UVeye, a company that makes vehicle diagnostic systems.
The diagnostic systems use AI and sensors to identify broken parts or issues that require maintenance. GM Ventures, which is the automaker’s venture fund, made the investment.
This isn’t the first AI-focused startup GM ventures has invested in. The amount hasn’t been disclosed.
GM will sell UVeye’s tech to its dealers, so that they can use it to improve their vehicle-inspection systems. In fact, the tech is already being used on a trial basis at a few stores.

In addition, GM and UVeye will work together to use the tech for other projects that revolve around vehicle inspections — fleet operations and used-car auctions, for example.
Pictures show a system that uses a large piece of machinery — the sourced link from The Verge compares it to airport body scanners — that scans the car and produces a report showing what’s wrong. Supposedly, it can drill down to small details like tire pressure, and it takes just a few minutes to produce the report.
AI, high-definition cameras, and machine learning work together to inspect the car and find damage, defects, or missing parts.
The system will eventually be made available to 4,000 dealerships across the country, according to GM. UVeye already has a deal with an unnamed “major automotive retail management system” used by 15,000 American dealerships.
UVeye also closed $60 million in series C funding from a group of investors including CarMax last year.

This is a good application for Artificial Intelligence.
As a former dealer service grunt who didn’t participate directly in PDIs but was aware of how they worked — I agree.
Hmm.. I see that instead of the Toyota of the week shoved down our throats with every access of a page on here, it’s now some no-name Chinese tires!
Will wonders never cease!!!
No comment about the AI doing quality inspections on GM vehicles..that’s not even worth the effort!
AdBlock works most of the time
GM is making Honda and Acura EV SUV’s for North America…time to update your biasness.
I think F35 uses system like that to predict failures and order spare parts before the failure reveal itself.
Why doesn’t GM concentrate on its lousy market share. It is second to Toyota in the States and 6th place internationally.
A lot of GMs issues can be traced back to an excessive focus on market share.
market share is something GM hasn’t known how to increase since the duPont’s divested. the leadership of the last 40 years has been a combination of ineptitude and corruption.
Saying their managerial ineptitude has only been for the last 40 years is pretty generous. I’d go back 50+ years, when they decided to chase the almighty market share by lowering the price of a Cadillac and cheapening all interiors. They took their eye off the ball of innovation and quality.
jmo2 has the wisdom.
There is some truth to that. However, going from first to sixth place is pretty pathetic. I never thought I would see the day when GM had only 13.5% of the US market.
I’m not surprised in the least. Owned GM vehicles for years but my 2020 Silverado broke me of ever touching another GM again.
I should have learned my lesson on the 2012 it replaced.
AI inspection report:
“All components likely to fail soon.
It’s another cheaply made GM vehicle.
Recommendation: Replace with something better.”
3 were shot at WeatherTech Saturday morning.
Thank God he had his 2nd Amendment rights. I’d hate to think how bad this would have been if he’d gone in there armed with only rage and fists.
As you have gone off topic, would a massacre with a machete have been preferable? No silly 2nd Amendment to get into the way to cause consternation.
UPDATE: The incident referred to by Ol Shel occurred in in a Chicago, Illinois, suburb. The 2nd Amendment does not apply in that location as current state and local laws there do not permit firearms possession outside the domicile of the perpetrator.
Will this also scan and measure panel fit? GM has gotten much better with fit but there is still some room for improvement.
