It seems obvious that I’m making the CC Clues too easy. So we’re going to do something else here: a replay of a very difficult Mystery Car Identification contest that ran on another site back in the day when they still did such mundane things. And what made me think of it? It ran for several days, and yours truly finally nailed it; my life’s greatest achievement. It gave me the inspiration for the CC Clue a few years later. We’re going to have to use the honor system: if you actually remember it (I doubt you will), please refrain. Because the guesses alone are going to be fun. And we will duly acknowledge said author and web site when the contest ends.

Hint: This is a production scoop, not an aftermarket or custom item.

Update: This car was not necessarily found on the street!

Contest Over: We have a correct guess: Dave Shulze, who said 1954 Fiat 8V. Excellent job!

I realize in retrospect that this may not have been such a brilliant idea given the how easy it is to find everything on Google. Oh well; seemed like a good idea at the time.  BTW, I gave away the Mazda Rotary Kit to the first ever CC Clue winner. Sorry about not having prizes. It’s for the honor!

Here’s the link to my cyber-buddy Murilee Martin’s contest at Jalopnik:

Ironically, I thought it was the front facing hood scoop I was identifying; I didn’t realize it also had two smaller rear facing extraction scoops too.

Well, the TR-6 must have been way too easy. Revver had it before my hand fully returned from hitting the “publish” button. I hope this one is going to be a bit more challenging, but you guys are amazing.

It’s yellow! The recent Ford EXP win probably goes to rocketrodeo, who said “Mercury LN7”. Since to the best of my knowledge, the cute little twins shared the same tail light, there would be no way to distinguish. Unless someone raises an objection, it will be so. Stay mellow!

I apologize for the late hour of this Clue. I work rather, um, organically, and often don’t decide until late in the day or even in the morning what CC I’m in the mood to do. Today’s Corvair inspired this, although I don’t think that’s much of a clue.

Styles79 cried “Austin Devon” first, and for that he is to be congratulated. See you soon!

Last week’s Checker Marathon tailgate was tough enough. And then Dr Lemming has to go and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with this comment: I’m not remembering a wagon with such a pronounced horizontal character line right above the bottom of the tailgate. For example, I don’t think it is a Checker wagon. Oi veh! Congratulations on your certainty anyway. Have fun!

Long time regular TTAC reader/contributor Chuck Goolsbee wins his second VW CC Clue. He nabbed the ’75 Rabbit, and now the Bus/Kombi. I guess it takes a lifelong VW driver to know one when he sees one. Congratulations. I don’t think I’ll be giving away too much to say that if Chuck is the VW master guesser, he may come up short with this one. Lots of luck!

[Update: it’s a hard one, so I’ll throw you a bone to at least keep focused: it was built in Michigan]

Regular TTAC reader and prolific commentator (in the best way possible) Robert.Walter gets the win for his guess on the Bonneville. An honorary mention goes to 153624 for his guess of a similar vintage Grand Prix. For all I know, their hoods are identical.

I’m sorry for the size and low resolution of today’s clue, but them’s the brakes! Have fun.

No, the rusty pair of pliers is not a hint. Or is it?

Kudos to one of my favorite CC readers geeber for correctly catching the 1962 Ford Fairlane. Sir, your comments inspire me to try harder, and you never fail to notice when I’ve had the inspiration, time or energy to do better than average. For that and your other insightful comments I am most appreciative.

Well, this looks very familiar to me. Take that as a (rare) hint, if you like. Time to recognize our winners of the last Clue, wich was a two-fer. tklockau was the first to guess both the Prelude and Colt. But let’s recognize hotdogmaki for the first Prelude ID; and Shoichiro B. Hara as the first Colt recognizer. Congratulations, and happy guessing.  Sorry about the lateness.

Ok, today is a two-fer. Not by design, but this little gold car happened to pop up in the background as I was looking for my Clue. The CC is in the foreground, though. My goodness, what bulging taillights you have! A very hearty hurrah to SFO in training for the absolutely superb guess on the center headlight kit of the 1950 Ford. Awesome!

By on March 22, 2010

The last clue was a a bit tricky, what with the old round Chevy taillights grafted onto the ’76 (or whatever year) Nova. But Don C came through, and nailed it. Congratulations. Some folks’ creative impulses can make the CC Clue a bitch. Anyway, this one shouldn’t cause any head scratching; or will it?

Once again, last night’s clue went too quickly. Within minutes, yoribe called out the MB 240D. Commentator sfdennis1′s correct guess actually appeared on the front page first, but what happens is that first time comments get held up a bit in the back end. But they have a time stamp on them which is what we go by.

Anyway, in hopes of stymieing you id wizards, this car is not quite original; a mild custom actually. But its not something far out like the Envoy Epic, if you get my drift. Anyway, GI will only get you so far. Have fun.

Sorry about the lateness of tonight’s clue. You Easterners are probably in bed by now, but the left coasters will take up the slack. Speaking of slack, Loser guessed the Ford cop car on the first comment. That makes you a Winner! Hopefully, it won’t go quite so quickly tonight.

The paint scheme is a big but obvious clue, but today’s cop car theme makes this irrepressible. Today’s Rampage guessing turned into a rampage of correct right guesses, within minutes of posting it. Steve Campen jumped in first. I’m guessing someone’s going to guess this one even faster.

Good work! majo8 won quadruple points in yesterday’s Clue. No bonus points today, though; just the glory of being the first to id this car. Ready, set, go!
