BMW Group U.S. Reports 10% sales increase in July 2010
___________
As a first time BMW buyer last month, let me see if my micro-experience might explain what BMW had to do to finally sell me a new car.
1) First time since I started following diesel BMW’s (about 10 months ago) that you could get both the eco-credit ($4,500) and incentive financing (0.9% for 24 months) at the same time.
2) $1,000 “Ultimate Drive Event” credit for having attended a BMW sales event in June.
3) Federal Tax credit for diesel ($1,800 on X5, $900 on 335d) that expires at the end of the year.
Throw in a decent dealer discount and I picked up a new 2011 diesel X5 for less than the asking price on 2009 Certified Pre-Owned X5 diesels with 20,000 miles.
If cutting incentives is the key to profitability, I wonder just how little profit BMW made (before currency considerations) on my fairly low-spec X5.

Huge mistake! Everyone knows new cars a bad deal, you should have paid more for the ’09 :-P
Sounds like the taxpayer did most of the incentive spending.
One data point doth not make a trend. Even if sales are (or in the cases of those companies not yet reported, will be) up for July, I’ll wait for August and September sales reports to proclaim the darkest days behind us….if, that is, the numbers can be believed…
Government Motors has all kinds of incentives to….erm….stretch their reporting ahead of the IPO….
I thought VW sold more here in the US than they apparently do.
Oddly enough, Martin Winterkorn apparently thinks VW should sell more in the US than they do!
Wow…another dismal month for Ford…(he he he…)
The Flex continues it’s trend of horrid sales…and was outsold by the ancient Explorer.
The MKS didn’t even break 1K units
The MKT is stuck at around 700.
The Taurus is down almost 2K units from it’s best month.
The Cadillac SRX outsold the WHOLE LINCOLN BRAND.
Mercury…yet again,…outsold Lincoln.
The Malibu and Sonata outsold the mediocre Fusion.
The Mustang beat the Camaro by only 3 units…proving that people were NOT waiting for the 2011 boat anchor engines to drop in the Mustang…and that it wouldn’t murder the Camaro when they hit.
The Transient Connect is proving it’s worthless.
I guess the only bright spot was the fleet heavy Focus, Escape, F-Series and Edge.
Bold moves indeed.
Does anyway find it slightly curious that, of the big six (GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda and Nissan), the two players who spent the least this month in incentives (Toyota and Honda) are the two whose sales declined?
Joe Isuzu died?
Sniff
It looks like my beloved little Suzuki is not far behind.
