The French-Japanese relations continue to bloom. Here is the latest tie-up. Forget former on-again, then off-again relationships. This time, it’s serious. The Nikkei [sub] reports that Mitsubishi Motors and France’s PSA have tied the knot and will jointly breed new sports utility vehicles.
New SUVs for the Peugeot and Citroen brands will be based on Mitsu’s RVR compact SUV. The car is also known as ASX in Europe, and should arrive in the U.S.A. as Outlander Sport anytime soon.
European buyers can expect the offsprings of the happy couple in early 2012. The target is to make 50,000 SUVs a year and sell them as French.

It’s an attractive compact SUV–not overly trendy as some are–but gosh those things don’t have much “utility.” One large suitcase can fill up the diminutive luggage space unless the second-row seats are put away. Trailer hitches should be standard equipment.
Actually Mitsubishi has been making regular Outlanders for PSA for a few years now.
I only wish they hadn’t slapped the Lancer Evolution mug on this car… really doesn’t suit it… On the Lancer, it gives it a nice, chunky, masculine look. On a vehicle which doesn’t suffer from being dainty, it just makes it look heavy.
The previous Outlander was conservatively handsome. While it could have used some flash, they could have done better than this.
I wonder if they will will label it at Peugeot as the 4007 like the actual Outlander is.
Which engines will each brand will offer?
I agree with niky, also I prefer the equipment and look of the Peugeot one.
From this angle, it’s looking very BMW snout-like
OFN. The Outlander-based Citroen C-Crosser has been out for a while:
