farago1.jpgThe mighty Farago has taken ill. As our editor in chief is even more of a tenacious bastard in real life than he lets on here, we predict Robert will be back to full strength within a few days. Unfortunately for you, dear TTAC reader, that means no updates for the next couple of earth rotations. Until then, enjoy the archives.

Well… He shouldn’t sniff on that insecticide he uses to get the bugs out of the servers…

  • avatar

Oh no!!! What am I going to do to waste time at work now!???

Hope you are well soon, Mr. Farago

Heh, I might actually have a productive week at work now.

  • avatar

Best wishes to Cap’n Farago for a speedy recovery.

See you in a few days…

Hey Johnny or Sajeev or Michael – how about posting some sort of ‘article topic’ and let us comment whores have at it for the 2 days? How about something like “What’s the most overpriced car under $100k out there right now?” or “what’s the most disappointing vehicle you’ve driven lately?” or something to that extent (can you tell I’ve got a torch to burn here?)

Perhaps we can impress Mr. Farago enough to let a few of us be new writers when he returns…

Is this the first episode of the Farago death watch?

  • avatar

    You’re right…I apologize…

But don’t you think that the timing on that is bad? Like it would be funny when he comes back, but right now it’s a bit of poor taste, don’t you think?

Then again, maybe I’m just touchy today – ESPN radio has been doing a fundraiser for the Jimmy V foundation for Cancer today, and they keep playing that damn 1993 Espy Awards speech with the “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up” and they had Dick Vitale on, who gets choked up everytime he talks about Jimmy V…and they’ve been playing it ALL DAY, and it’s really sad and inspirational at the same time…

I spoke with Robert’s wife — he’s going to be fine.

As soon as I know more, I’ll let you all know.

I know Farago’s family appreciates the kind words, even though they are drenched in sarcasm.

  • avatar

The rest of us have no power to post. So you’re out of luck there.

As for writing for TTAC, Robert accepts submissions from anyone. So I suppose you can use the time you’d usually spend reading TTAC writing something for TTAC.

    Ronin-
Sorry if that offended you or anyone else. I wouldn’t make that comment if I thought it was something serious.

Is it just a coincidence that you guys show a Chevy truck being worked on? C’mon, hasn’t the General taken enough of a beating on your website?

  • avatar
    Jonny Lieberman

It is more of “a little work being done under the hood” metaphor.

No frame-off restoration or anything like that.

Robert, have a speedy recovery for your sake and your family’s! Lastly and least, for us – we need the best automobile site back with new articles as your health will allow.

I second those who will be more productive at work, however. It is tough to be the boss at work – there is no one to tell you to get off the laptop and get to work! Except for my wife – fortunately she works part-time.

I’m sick too, but that’s because I’m a Cubs fan. Get better, RF!

Write for the TTAC? Well, that would mean that I have to learn what the hell passive construction is, and how to avoid it.

    Get well soon Mr. Farago.

As for the rest of y’all: I noticed some articles from the “vintage” TTAC now have comment sections. Spread the smarminess!

  • avatar

I bet he’s lying. He just doesn’t like us anymore.

It’s alright. I can take it. You can tell me the truth. I’m used to rejection.

Get well very soon, RF; we miss you. Forced TTAC withdrawal symptoms are not easy for the rest of us.

    Get better sir!!

Hope it’s just a bug, nothing serious. I enjoy following your rants and raves since the old Robb Report days!!

I thought he sounded sick on the Jalopnik podcast yesterday.

Get well soon, Robert. I promise the piece on how underappreciated the Chevy Monza is will be done soon . . .

Otherwise the doctor might want to examine you…

    A few things:
1.) Can we get an icon for the site? I love having my navigation toolbar dealy-bob in firefox all icons and no text (saves room). Maybe have a “Design a TTAC Icon” contest…
2.) If you want this to be a pay site, you can’t afford to have down time like this. I already sense you’re kind of a “control freak”, not that there’s anything wrong with that… But you need to find someone you trust enough to make 2nd in command to help with the editing should you be out of town (likely) or sick (not as often / likely)
3.) Please tell the Karesh guy to quit spamming autoblog. His articles are very well written, but I cringe every time I see his name, because of the relentless spamming he does on autoblog.
4.) Learn to see “both sides” of things. It’s interesting when you hate everything about a car, and gives the site a edgy teenage angst feel that makes us all snicker. But still, at the end of the day, I refuse to believe that so many cars exist with no redeeming qualities (including the new sebring!). So much of what’s wrong with the internet in general is this feeling that it’s “cool” to hate everything. “OMG THAT CAR IS A TOTAL RIPOFF OF THAT OTHER CAR THAT HAD HEADLIGHTS AND STUFF!” or “OMG AMERICAN POS!!!”… Sure it makes the adolescents feel warm and fuzzy, but I think being “balanced” and telling the “truth” about cars has to include something other than blinding hate. (Yeah there was a freestyle review that pointed out how bad it was but then said “I love it!”, this isn’t what I mean)
5.) Get rid of the 3 second delay / screen darken picture popup thing. It was fine before, I don’t like having to wait for anything, most tech savvy people do not either.
6.) For your thumbnails, have a separate RESIZED image. It’s painfully amateurish to show a full-size image and use the browser to shrink it down. There’s no interpolation or any other niceness, just a jaggy low quality scaled down pic.

    Sir!

I hope you feel better very soon. For your family (I loved hearing from your daughter on some of the Jalopnik precasts. Those bits really made my day.) and for those of us who really do appreciate your work. Besides, I’m hoping to beat Mr. Hasty to the punch with my “Appreciation Of The Mighty ’73 Jeep Commando” article.

    Your pal,

    bob

Well, glad as I am to have some more time to work on the rewrite of the 2006 Pontiac Solstice review, I am genuinely sorry to hear you’re “down”, Robert. The stress of trying to keep the site going must have worn you down. Being in a similar place myself – speaking figuratively – I can sure relate. Of course, “downtime” – to use the phrase long-distance truckers and others who use machinery to make a living have for decades – gets costly; since as a freelance writer and Internet entrepreneur yourself, you need to be up-and-running, to make that cash flow work in a positive way. But the important thing is to remain healthy and keep at it. The rest of things work themselves out, one way or another, if one’s health is there and you keep slugging.
I hope you are in good hands. I know that those of us who read TTAC and pray will be praying for you – even those of us who are agnostics. What harm can it do? And it may help.
Keep in mind, these words from Robert Browning: a man’s reach must exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?

Ahh, now it makes sense why there was no Jalopy pre-cast yesterday…

All the best Farago, get well soon!

All the best RF. Look forward to your return and the continued development of TTAC.
I do agree with the comment about the picture thing mentioned above. I enjoyed the separate pop-ups. Allowed you to view all photos while reading.
