lincolnmkr_6498.jpgGet out yer shovel, Ford is exhuming Lincoln. The Motor Authority reports that the 415hp "TwinForce" V6 engine featured in the Lincoln MKR concept car is actually going into a Lincoln. (The "twin" part of the moniker refers to "improved efficiency and performance," not double forced induction.) But wait, there's more! Ford claims it's developing "TwinForce" four and eight cylinder engines, the latter destined for high end cars and Mustangs. Keep in mind that Ford has disappointed us once or twice before (Interceptor, 427, Shelby GR-1, every Lincoln concept in the past ten years, etc.). I'm expecting to drive a cool-looking 400-horse V6 Ford, along with the promised six-speed dual clutch transmission, about the time geneticists engineer airborne swine.

Woo! I can’t wait to stomp me some 415 hp worth of luxurious torque steer!

    Well, rear wheel drive.

Which “Lincoln”? The tarted up Expedition (Navigator)? The recycled Edge (MKX)? The warmed over Fusion (MKZ)? A hot engine isn’t going to do anything unless they have a distinctive car to wrap around it. The only way they’ll be able to “resurrect” Lincoln is to give it UNIQUE vehicles, not things that look like Mercuries that have been dipped in an aftermarket parts bin.

That’s funny, some other website said the Twin Force would NOT be in the MKS, rather it would have a N/A V6 derived from the MKZ/MKX/Edge/Taurus.

The MKS looks decent, even if its too tall, un-American and dorky with its Volvo chassis underneath. Add the Twin Force and well, its gonna appeal to many people. With AWD, its gonna be the car WRX owners grow up and lust for.

I think the flying pig will arrive first. They can’t build it if they don’t stay in business.

Exactly what is so great about this powerplant that makes it a big deal. And if it’s such a great design why the realization NOW that building a 4 and 8 would make good business sense.

Update: I found the link that disagrees with this one.

If they can get something out that had the detailing and surfacing that the MKS had then they’ve got a winner on their hands, sounds like they have done it too with what ever engine inside.

autoblog actually said recently that the MKS will be getting the winged grill from the MKR concept. I think it looks hot. Also, the MKR needs to be put into production, if for anything but the looks.

I don’t know but that winged grill looks like a porno mustache to me.

I do suppose now that Ford has busied itself with dumping the PAG albatrosses, they can actually devote more of their engineering efforts toward making Lincoln the great car that it once was.

Never mind I found out what makes that twin-force so great, nothing. From the specs and discription I found it’s Ford’s copy of VW/Audi’s direct injection turbo that has been in production for 2 years now. Nothing new here just looks like they are trying to keep up with the Jones’, late to the game as usual.

Ford/Lincoln marketing at its finest. From the article above:

(The “twin” part of the moniker refers to “improved efficiency and performance,” not double forced induction.)

So, um, yeah. About that lack of supercharger AND turbocharger… I hardly call the direct injection force, but to each his own.

How is the poor whale they stole that grille from going to strain krill from the ocean?

    Redbarchetta:

I’m guessing it is based on the same turbo direct injection engine technology that they developed with Mazda. That engine has been in production for 2 years now and they decided to green light the tech for Lincoln. Seems to me like they might be keeping up fairly well.

Mullaley drove a Lexus before he came to Ford and loved it—-me thinks Lincoln has a better shot at revival than it did before he arrived.

contrary to my expectations, Mullaly is keeping a low profile these days… perhaps mark fields should learn from him. anyhow, This article from autoblog is my source for my above comment about the MKS adopting the “split bow wave” grill from the R. Also, the article claims that it will be the new corporate face of Lincoln, this grill.

The car in the pic needs brought to market as is; minus those atrocious side mirrors.

Those mirrors kind of remind me of a T. Rex’s front legs (arms?). A bit out of place on such a beast…

    What a gorgeous car

It will never happen, but it would be kind of cool if they created an uber-Lincoln with a bored and stroked 460 (after all, they do make the SVO block). The car pictured here packing 532 or 557 cubic inches would be kind of a hoot.

No doubt someone in Dearborn is figuring if they re-named the MKS the “LS”, all of Lincoln’s problems would be solved. Why not actually build the LS again with a series of powertrain options a la BMW 5-series. That was a decent car which simply needed a little development money to bring it into the big leagues.

  • avatar
    Orian

While I’ve never really been a big fan of Ford, I loved the LS. Edgett is right – they should have invested more into that vehicle and gave it more options.

Having spent time in the MKS, let me be the first to say that it will not ressurect Lincoln. In fact, I belive it will be the final nail in the coffin. As I drive it I can’t help but envision the future TTAC review!
