112_0607_lwp_04wl2007_lamborghini_murcielago_lp640passenger_side_action_view.jpgYesterday we asked about new cars and which one upsets you the most. Today we'll be discussing which new car makes you the happiest. And don't say your new Honda Pilot, because even if it's true, no one cares. Nope, we're here to talk supercars. New supercars, specifically (so don't answer 959). 'Cause lets face it: 99 percent of us wish we had loads more money for the express purpose of buying a supercar. That same 99 percent is jealous of Jay Shoemaker, too. Speaking of Jay, my favorite supercar isn't the Audi R8. First of all, it looks like a bulimic dolphin, the carbon fiber side panels are lame and even though it's a mid-engined car, it boasts a grill bigger than Goldie's. Second it has the same engine as the RS4, and I like the RS4 better. I'm not going to mention Ferrari, either. Yes, yes: fast, precise, impeccably made, luxurious. It all sounds quite German to me. And no Porsche, either. Maybe at one point in time I could have gone for the Carrera GT, but the world has moved on. So has Porsche. The new Corvette ZR-1 is pretty tempting, but it's still a $100k Chevrolet. The Nissan GT-R is getting warmer but contains too many electronic shenanigans for my taste. Aston Martins are too pretty these days, what happened to the bulldogs? I'm very close to choosing the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR, because it's just so absolutely bonkers. Truthfully, the big Dodge is the supercar I would pick if there wasn't one even more insane: the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. It's not even symmetrical. You?

I’d pick the Ford GT, but it’s no longer in production.

  • avatar
    quasimondo

It would have to be the Ford GTX1. I saw a Top Gear episode where Jeremy Clarkson was ripping around the test track in one, and that exhaust note was simply heavenly.

    autobahner44

It has got to be the Audi R8.
Detroit is a winter wonderland today, and the R8 would be a riot to blast around in-as long as it’s shod with winter skins…
TopGear’s sports car of the year as well.

    Jonny, didn’t you like Flipper?

    Alfa Romeo 8C

Simply the most beautiful car built since the E-type Jaguar. Truly sex on wheels.

I lust after the RUF-modified Cayman.

The Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 is the one car I would buy if I had the cash, assuming a Veyron or a Maserati MC12 don’t count

Actually, the Saleen S7 looks even more outrageous (and better in my opinion) and I think it’s faster too.

    Koenigsegg CCR.

    http://www.koenigsegg.com/thecars/explore.asp?submenu=9

The wrap around windshield. The sheer peformance. The fact that I will never see one on the road in my lifetime!

I think I would risk everything on a 30’s era Alfa, most likely the 6C over the 8C.

Koenigsegg CCX – ~840hp 2400lbs, and boosted with the same SC thats going in my car, so its pretty much like I’m getting one…

Ferrari F430 – Impeccably made? Still plenty of good old unreliability to remind me its an exotic while also having that amazing screaming V8 and still beautiful looks. When I have the cash it will be mine, and I’m not talking about some SMG bs either. I wanna rake those gears through a clanky impossible shift gate.

    Do ragtops count as supercars?

As a guy who likes to be the devil’s advocate, I chose the devil’s car: the TVR Tuscan S.

  • avatar

    Lotus Elise, affordable and flickable.

Maserati GranTurismo, styling is over the top, but it is a much more interesting choice than an Aston.

But a big neg on the Reventon- the most overpriced body kit ever.

Without a doubt, the McClaren F1 – v12 engine, made to be as comfortable a road car as a race car can be. But what really seals the deal is the 3 seater setup. 3 is the perfect number plus the driver’s centered view is awesome.

McClaren F1. I just don’t like the look of the Koenigsegg; it’s just too over the top for my taste, based on what I saw on Top Gear. I would pick the Ford GT, but I don’t know that it counts as a new car, as it’s out of production with no plans to produce any in the foreseeable future.

  • avatar
    Justin Berkowitz

Alfa 8C or Ferrari 599. Sorry Jonny, it’s not at all German. It’s just the least screwed up Ferrari ever made. And Ferraris aren’t inherently supposed to have deep flaws – that’s Lamborghini’s territory.

  • avatar
    mrmcderm

    Please. No contest. 997 GT3.

  • avatar
    blautens

Definitely the Koenigsegg CCX. I just don’t know what color I’d order, silver, or the requisite supercar color – red.

  • avatar

    I second mrmcderm: 997 GT3.

  • avatar

The Studio Torino RK Coupe, hands down (my pants). First runner up: Nissan GT-R. Honorable mentions: Alfa 8C, the Aston DBS. These cars are all way past the limits of any road you’ll ever drive them on, so you might as well spring for the styling. I’m a life long Porschephile, but that Nissan has all the right boyhood poster sharp angles to hit all of my buttons.

  • avatar

F430 Scuderia anyone? I’ll probably see as many as I’ve seen 360CS and Enzos (1 and 2 respectively), so they’re about as exclusive as any modern car gets, and man oh man do they play the supercar part, unlike the overweight beasts that dominate this price range now. Plus the engine is in the right place :)

    Veyron

I vote for the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Screaming V10, looks like sex, won’t kill you, and the orange seats come standard.

As usual , I read it wrong….If I were to choose a “new” supercar it would have to be RF’s excellent choice- RUF’s
    Cayman.

  • avatar
    osnofla

is nissan gt-r a supercar? if not then a 911 GT2 always made me pitch a tent

  • avatar
    Edward Niedermeyer

It has to be the 599…

  • avatar
    Lichtronamo

The McClaren F1 has to be THE supercar of all-time.

However, I’d take the GT-R regardless of price because it has the ability to transform anyone into Schumacher and probably won’t get you killed driving it either. No other car makes such performance so accessible to so many.

    Easy one…Porsche 997 GT2. I lust after this car.

Take a ridiculous rear engine layout, combine it with two big turbos and loads of 21st century technology, then mix well. It’s like a prescription drug…probably safe, but don’t push your luck and take too much at once.

Plus, it’s a 911. It’s got the history, yet it’s not so crazy looking as to warrant unwanted attention. There is space for luggage, the driving position is rational, and you can see out well in every direction. You could drive it every day or throw some bags in the trunk and drive cross-country with your S.O. As supercars go, it’s the best of both worlds.

  • avatar

Ferrari F430. Because just the way it sounds gives me goosebumps.

  • avatar
    Mike S

Has to be the McLaren F1. It’s beautiful, insanely fast, insanely expensive, totally impractical and costs the GDP of a small country to maintain.

    The perfect supercar.

  • avatar
    whatdoiknow1

In recent memory there has only been one “so-called exotic/supercar that has lived up to its promise and that car is the Ferrari Enzo.

Outside of the Enzo, like it or not the Nissan GT-R will be the most significant performance car of this era. Nevermind the name and the price this car is truly an achivement at a time when the glorified names in the industry are basically building so-so exotics, many using a “parts-bin” approach.

  • avatar
    KatiePuckrik

Well, for me, it’d have to be the Aston Martin DB9! It looks stunning, it’s a cool marque and it’s quick as hell!

It’s all things to all petrolheads!

I also agree with whatdoiknow1. The Nissan GT-R will be responsible for loads of 30 something men moving back in with their parents so they can afford a GT-R! I’m seriously contemplating it! lol

  • avatar
    Jordan Tenenbaum

You nerds, the F1 hasn’t been produced for what, about a decade? Move on.

As for me, I’ll take a bloody Morgan Aero Max. Figuratively, or literally.

If that’s somehow not considered a supercar, then I’ll take a Pagani Zonda C12 F.

  • avatar
    incitatus

A shelby aero super car. Stunning, affordable and the keeper of world top speed record for a production car (on the roads of washington state, practically here in my backyard).

Nissan GT-R (It has back seats… and two drive shafts)

I’m a traditionalist, and a nonconformist. DeTomaso Pantera.

  • avatar

If it was still in production, I’d say Ford GT. I’ve seen a couple driving around and they are nice. After that, the F430.

  • avatar
    whatdoiknow1

I must also admit that the Ford GT has a street presence that puts any of the “new” Lamboghinis and Aston Martins to shame. The Ford GT looks like the body was shrinked wrapped around the wheels, unlike the Lambos, ZERO bloat. It also looks like it is only 3 feet off of the ground.
    Ah, Beauty!
If you have ever seen a older Lambo Miura in person you will understand what I am talking about.

    Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Spider.

    Sanman111

The Ford GT, THe Alfa 8C, or the Aston Martin DBS for a supercar on the street. To simply drive a supercar as it was meant to be dirven there is only one answer for me: The Lotus Exige S240.

  • avatar
    SherbornSean

I’d probably go for a Cayman and accept your ridicule for choosing something that’s not quite a supercar.

Given that I will never buy a car like this, I would have to say the Veyron.

That thing is a machine. Even without ever utilizing it near it’s limits, one would have to admire the shear capability. It’s a rolling jet plane.

  • avatar
    wmba

Mercedes Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series.

Because I like to be comfortable giving Ferraris a hard time. And have a warranty that might actually be worth something.

    That would be super.

For supercar, I read wildly impractical car. They are pretty much synonymous in my mind. And in that spirit, make mine an Ariel Atom. I don’t think there is anything on that car that isn’t related to the act of driving. Six way power seats, AC, radio, heater – nope (what are you, some sort of wussy?) Windshield, doors, windows, roof, who needs’em? Also, its actually affordable (not saying its a bargain) and in a pinch could be serviced by Cletus down at the local GM service center.

  • avatar
    HEATHROI

its a toss up between the the GT3 or the GTR

  • avatar
    AuricTech

New supercars, specifically (so don’t answer 959).

I guess that leaves Gerry Anderson’s Supercar out….

ALFA ROMEO 8C – beautiful sheetmetal.

Shelby Super Cars – SSC Ultimate AERO TT – 256+ mph beast

I haven’t driven anything resembling a supercar, but from what I’ve read I’ll take an F430 Spider with a manual transmission.

  • avatar
    BuckD

Alfa Romeo 8C. Not the fastest, but definitely the sexiest. And only 500 of them. Ever.

  • avatar
    Lumbergh21

Okay, if I have to pick one actually still in production, Porsche GT3 RS. As super cars go, (based on my limited 911 experience) it’s reliable, civilized, and practical. I love the Ariel Atom, but it’s not outrageously expensive (in the supercar world), and I could conceivably own one one day (if my wife divorces me and I inherit a lot of money afterwards). These two “realities” rule against it being a supercar in my mind.

P.S. I still love any car like a McClaren that has a cd player custom built to save weight, uses the exhaust system as part of the crumple zone material to save weight, and uses gold leaf as a heat reflector to save weight (and keep the thing from catching on fire).

    Pagani Zonda F on ice

The classic old-school styling and details of the Aston Martin DB-9 coupe or the more edgy styling of the Ferrari F599 GTB Fiorino? I’ll have one of each.

  • avatar
    TeeKay

    The criteria being a new, in-production car…

    I’ll take:

1a. F430 Spyder (gated shifter, if they still make those)

    1b. Aston DB9 (the auto-paddles)

    2. GT3 in white or yellow

  • avatar
    MBella

IF concepts count, the R8 from the NAIAS with the V12 TDI. If not then the Koenigsegg CCX.

  • avatar
    Phil Roast Beef

You said new so the Intermeccanica Murena and McLaren F1 are out. It would have to be the GTX1 (Gennadi will still make one for you until August of this year) the 8C (sex on wheels and sooo beautiful) the Vantage V12 RS (pretty but packs a punch) or an R8 TDI (not pretty or sexy but you can’t argue with 738 ft-lb of twist and 23 mpg!)

  • avatar
    bfg9k

Alfa Romeo 8C. What a beautiful car.

Failing that, I’ll take a 911 GT2. Exotic yet somewhat practical.

  • avatar
    casper00

Lexus just announce that the Lexus LF-A Roadster is going into production so I guess I’ll pick that one, V10 with over 500hp.

  • avatar
    kovachian

Zonda man, Zonda. I want it in 650 horse ‘F’ guise, the body completely naked in bare carbon fiber with the cockpit slathered off-white ostrich leather.

Gimme that and I’ll die a happy man. No really. I’ll die. But happy.

  • avatar

sorry, let me respell that – Pagani

oh, and its the Zonda F Roadster
