KERO reports that California Sheriff's deputies looking for three suspected drug dealers in the Kern River Valley area ended up searching for their own patrol car instead. Sheriffs said they parked their marked unit behind an abandoned vehicle involved with their investigation. When they came back from searching for the suspects, their cruiser was gone. Sheriff's said it was “tampered with” and then semi-submerged in Lake Isabella, northwest of Bakersfield. One of the men admitted that he was hiding in the abandoned vehicle, but denied he was involved with the patrol car’s immersion. The other two suspected drug dealers were arrested on grand theft auto (amongst other charges). Meanwhile, the “long-awaited fourth installment” of Grand Theft Auto is due to be released on April 29th. Will art imitate life or vice versa?

The police in the small city I reside in ALWAYS leave their keys in the car with the car running…and are gone long enough that anyone with large enough kahunas could drive off.
I’m amazed it hasn’t happened yet in our neck of the woods to be honest.
I guess it would make more sense for officers to take their keys with them and lock the patrol car. That way, it will take longer to get into the car if they need it.
It seems cops are damned if they do and damned if they don’t in this situation. Leaving the car running means it’s ready to go if needed; locking it up means wasted time in a potentially critical situation.
With regard to the video game GTA4, it’s probably going to be enough to make me upgrade to a PS3. That and Gran Turismo are basically the only games I even want to play on a videogame system.
I bought a PS3 back in October in hopes of getting the game come Christmas. I don’t own a PS3, I own a GTA-IV console.
Maybe its time for TTAC to talk GTA-San Andreas before the latest version comes out.

It certainly seems that local municipalities could spring for an extra keyless entry fob so that the cops can have their donuts and eat them too: leave the car running, but locked.
The game will look pretty much the same on both xbox 360 and PS3.
And yes, Forza 2, Gran Turismo, and GTA are must-buy for automotive fans.
I have been waiting for the new GTA and Brothers in Arms game to come out before I invest in an XBOX 360. If they don’t push the release date back again on the GTA looks like I will be getting my wife a 360 for her birthday ;)
Wouldn’t keyless entry and a remote start solve the officers problems. Shouldn’t cost that much considering the price they pay for those cruisers and its practically standard equipment on other cars these days. What ever happen to the Carbon Motor Co. and their purpose built cruiser, they should be able to integrate something like that, if they ever get off the ground.

DUH! Why didn’t I think of that??? {kicks self in ass}
