The mainstream automotive press is all abuzz with the prospect that Chrysler will have a Volt-trumping electric vehicle (EV), or plug-in hybrid, or some damn thing in the showrooms before GM’s highly-hyped Volt. And it’s not just idle speculation; it’s company-fed idle speculation. ChryCo Prez Jim Press did the GM Car Czar Bob Lutz techno trash talking thing with the LA Times. “We’re not advertising a car we don’t intend to sell for five years today,” Press told the Up To Speed (and God knows what else) reporter. “What we’re doing is investing the money to build that car now.” Now as in now? Or now as in later? And will it be the ENVI of GM execs everywhere? The Detroit News can’t answer those questions. But Dan Strumpf reveals the Chrysler reveal will appeal to desperate dealers. His sleuthing indicates there will be a lot of popcorn on polyester come Tuesday. “Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealers across the country will get ‘insight into our business strategies’ Tuesday via videoconference at about 100 movie theaters across the nation, Chrysler spokesman Stuart Schorr said.” In high-def no less. How ironic is that?

I wonder how hard it is to put some batteries and an electric motor into a Dodge Aspen? It’d be akin to sticking sawdust in the tranny… it’s only gotta last until you unload the thing.

I assume you mean Chrysler Aspen, but if you actually mean the Dodge incarnation of that name, then sticking anything into that vehicle would automatically raise it’s value by orders of magnitude. Heck, if you toss a pack of gum in an Aspen, you double it’s value.
If you can find Aspen/Volaré that’s running–or better yet, running and in decent shape–you’ve found the automotive equivalent of Bigfoot. I grew up riding in a 1976 Aspen wagon. I have fond memories of dropping things through the holes in the floor.
My bad. I thought it was a Dodge. At least I didn’t call it a Plymouth.
I remember facing out the back of my grandparents Dodge Aspen as a very young youth. I could never remeber what that thing was called until I saw those pictures. The thing I remember most about it is it couldn’t hold the rear plate on to save it’s very short life. I remember it dropping off the back onto the highway 3 times on one highway stretch. I was the one who yelled the plate fell off, AGAIN.
For all the grief GM got over the Volt, at least GM has something, amirite?
