Good guy, a good person and an example to many. Rest In Peace Paul Newman…
Paul was class personified, and someone to emulate.
Besides being a really good actor (and race car driver), Paul Newman was of an era that defined the laid-back, cool persona to which, to this day, most American males aspire and can only dream about.
His passing, although inevitable, is still quite sad to those of us that grew up during a time when Newman made immortal the names of Cool Hand Luke, ‘Fast Eddie’ Felson, and Butch Cassidy.
Paul Newman was just an actor, nothing more.
He was cossetted and coddled his entire life.
His race car passion was merely a symptom of egotism.
His charity food products likely provided many tax advantages.
No actor is a saint. Quite the opposite.
Limmin:
Wow, talk about your nattering nabobs of negativity. I’ve always had a good deal of respect for Paul Newman. Many will, I’m sure, stand up for him more fully, but since he was not born into great wealth and he served in the military during WWII I think at least at those points he wasn’t cossetted or coddled. RIP Paul.
So limmin, what do you do to help the needy… Axsxoxe
If flaming is not allowed, then obvious flaming-baits like Limmin trolling the board should be severly reprimanded. Because there is no polite way of answering that without bitchslapping the SOB. I mean, he is trash-talking Paul Newman? You can’t have it both ways, Mr Farago. Either you allow us to retort with extreme prejudice, or you’ll have to edit the whole board…
Anybody like Newman who served as a crewman on an Avenger torpedo plane in WWII is not likely to be on most people’s “coddled” list.
And I’ll bet PN himself would have laughed at the idea of being considered a “saint”. I’m sure that Joanne Woodward, the lady who stayed married with him for 50+ years would have plenty to say about his weaknesses.
But more people will remember him for his accomplishments than will ever forget those who would snark at him after his passing.
Here is a more positive story.
Years ago when a friend of mine and I were (single, had money, and were) racing open-wheel cars, we were working on our car in the pits at Lime Rock. A guy stopped by and started asking some questions about what we were doing – it was Paul Newman. He was just a normal guy, asking to be treated like that, which I respected about him. After that, he just strolled down the pit, looking in at what was going on, by himself, no entourage or anything like that.
Some men you can look at and tell they’re putting on airs; others, you can shake their hand and know they’re the real thing. Paul Newman was the real thing.
Paul Newman is the best of Hollywood and America personified. Unfortunately those qualities are slowly dying out and the worst are coming out and ascending to the top.

Paul Newman and his wife were regulars at a restaurant where I worked as a valet parking cars back in the late 1970s. He would always come out to shoot the breeze with the valets and talk about cars of whatever.
He wasn’t just cool, he had class as well. Good tipper too.
Great Actor and everything else he did was hobby.
I never heard him say anything about politics and he was in a position to do whatever like the governator.

My personal #1 hero. Always loved him and was inspired by his life, integrity and talent. The fact that we shared a birthday was icing on the cake.

He was one of the best at what he did, yet still devoted time and effort to give back. His 50-year marriage defied the Hollywood “norm”.

Another loss of a great person and one we all or most of us on here really liked as both an Actor and a great human being,the one negative comment should be off this list, being in War service is not being what I would call being coddled either, I know having been there too, not in the Second War but long after, its no joy at any time. A Hollywood actor with a 50 year marriage–that says a lot.
One of my favorite actors. I did not agree with his politics but that never stopped me from enjoying his performances. His race car driving took balls, he was entitled to spend his money any way he wanted. He set an example by donating all proceeds from his food products to charity. A class act.

I just bought a bottle of Balsamic Vinagrette in his honor. Also, my old bottle was empty. I once saw Paul Newman at Elkart Lake, WI. It must have been around 1985. He was standing on the lawn near turn 5, surrounded by an entourage. I thought that was cool. I wasn’t expecting to see a Hollywood celebrity at this dirty old racetrack in Wisconsin.
