Automotive News [sub] reports that GM is claiming to have 10k pre-orders for its neo-pony car. Too bad they might not arrive on time. Still, that’s about 5k commitments per year of relentless hype. Not too shabby.

I saw one last weekend on I75 in Ohio. Somebody got to take a test mule home for Christmas :)
How many of these pre-sales are simply from the pent up demand of not being able to buy a new Camaro for the past 6 years? Is Chevy actually bringing in any new customers with this car? Between this, the Challenger, and the refreshed Mustang, are there enough existing customers to go around? All of these questions lead me to believe this car won’t make it to the next design cycle.
redrum:
This car won’t make it to the next design cycle because GM won’t make it to the next design cycle.
I see GM stock is up today. Who in the world is buying this stock, and what kind of drugs are they taking? I want some, because it must dull the pain of all the bad news in the economy….
As a benchmark how many orders did they have for the Solstice/Sky at this state of the product cycle.
There were 10K pre-orders on the Solstice, too. Funny, that.
Too late. I would say there is money better spent in bringing other vehicles here from GM Europe. There could be be better profitability with other vehicles that have been mostly paid for in development, etc. I wonder if an El Camino is next from GM.
Wait six months. By then, the boomers who still have money will have gotten theirs, and (if GM is still with us) GM will put a bunch of money on the hood to move them out the door.
I never understood people who preorder stuff in order to get it the first day.
If its a good enough product, don’t worry, they’ll make more. If its crap… Good luck getting your money back.
If the feds have veto power over major GM decisions, I don’t think the Camaro will last one model year, if that…
10k seems rather low for a car that is supposed to save GM’s (reputation/ bacon/ virginity/ Ferris). The smart had at least 3x that many deposits before the first buyer took delivery.
How many of these are bonafide customer sold orders as opposed to cars ordered by the dealer for inventory? In my former life as a car salesmen, I recall dealers who I worked for submitting bogus orders with fictitous names just to get the cars. I predict that when all the hype passes over and magazines like Car and Driver pick the Camaro over the Mustang, the Mustang will remain king in sales and will remain an icon, while Camaro and Challenger will not make it to the next restyle.
Yup, it’ll have a typical GM order cycle. The thing will go from being impossible to find to piling up everywhere like firewood in about six months. Of course, assuming GM still exists in six months.
It’s called Hype.
Apple would have you believe there were people camping out overnight (despite the bear attack risk) and that supplies would definitely run out even if you survived.
My colleagues wanted a release day iPhone too, so they just went down to the store that afternoon and got one…..
Will the Mustang’s new engine(s) be ready before the Camaro hits the showrooms?
Both look to be decent products.
Well, my dad wants to put down a deposit if there is a chance it will see the light of day. Compared directly to a Challenger R/T it’s a pretty good deal – for a few grand more, you get an SS with LSD, manual, Brembo brakes, and 420hp, versus the R/T with open diff, manual a 2K option, corporate bin brakes, and 375hp (and probably a lot more weight). I think he would do well to get either one of them, they are pretty good bargains – even if the Camaro is only a good deal in theory with the caveat of potentially never being made.
One thing that makes little sense to me – the G8 GT is about 41K here in Canerduh. There are no incentives or financing deals, despite what the GM advertising would lead you to believe (we checked and got blown off by a surly sales guy). The SS is listed in the mid-to-high 30s if you put down your deposit now. So the flagship Chevy product is undercutting the flagship Pontiac product by a fair margin and giving even more bang for your dollars. That seems odd, and indicative of the mess GM has on its hands. Ok, so it’s not a fair comparison, but it still makes me wonder what is going on at GM HQ.
