Inside is nice, but ugh, the outside is bloated, bulbous dung pile.
It really does not matter how it drives or what it can do. What it needs to do is carry four well-off people to the golf course and have the trunk close over the graphite/carbon fiber clubs.
It was designed to answer the question ” All the partners/hedge fund traders/senior managers have S class, or the big Jag. How do *I* stand out, even with that guy with the new Aston Martin at the end of the row ?”
More cars are sold on a basis of “parking lot parity” than any other reason. This is a shining example.
Oh, I’m sure it drives well. I can’t wait to see my first example blocking the left lane.

Not that I’d drive one, but I was thinking something more like $85k for the S.
People have started to nickname this oddly styled vehicle “the pickle” for some reason I noticed. I’m not sure though…Maybe if I saw it in green…
For $80K I’d have stretched… at $95K or thereabouts, with the usual Porsche load of “standard” equipment, no thanks.
$9,999. Tops. (and that is one dollar less than ten thousand)
You can get a car from the 500-hp class (XFR, E63, M5) for $5,000 less than Porsche’s car in the 380 to 420-hp class. Enough said.
It’s less expensive than I thought it’d be. No doubt the Turbo version (4.0s 0-60!) will be the volume seller. It’ll kick the Rapide’s ass on a track and still cost much less.
It’s nice to see them having finally come up with an updated interior, and it looks good.
jybt: they’re not in the same category. If you were to want a Panemera S, you’d not consider an M5. Don’t forget that Porsches are pretty much always significantly more expensive relatively.
That turbo8/PDK combo really have to be a smoothie to make this thing worth passing up an S for. ‘Performance’ in a big 4 seater is kind of pointless if it comes at the expense of comfort in the rear. Especially as there’s nothing fundamentally different about the car compared to any number of Bimmer pretenders.
They should’ve made it rear engined, RWD. With steering like a 911. Then it’s be worth every penny they could charge for it. As it is, other than perhaps >155mph top speed for Germany, I just don’t see the point.
Well… at the end of 5 years I will have paid $24K for my Altima so I’d be willing to pay that much to own this Porsche.
BUt they have to throw in the tints for free. I don’t want people to see me driving it….
The 507 hp CLS63 AMG is around $95k and is no doubt equally desirable, while one can get a well equipped (relatively speaking) E63 AMG Wagon at around $86k and have both the ultimate sleeper and a 500 hp station wagon for far less than the Porsche.
I’d guess in good times, they would sell pretty well. It’s a decent looking car, and Porsche really doesn’t build turkeys. Nowadays, this is going to be a tough sell…
The S is roughly $30k lower than the rumored based price. Several “sources” had it starting around $120k.
Not that I’m in a position to buy, but isn’t that more expensive than everything in the field given comparable power numbers?
I don’t think there’s going to be enough people with that much cash flow just willing to drop 92K just to be the rich guy with the ugly car. Those people already bought Quattroportes. I’d wait for the Rapide
There is no doubt in my mind that the Panamera will blow the Quattroporte and Rapide into the weeds. Even the M5 doesn’t stand much of a chance.
The Sultans of Stuttgart know they lost their mojo with the Cayenne. This vehicle will kick ass. It could well be the world’s fastest, best handling four-door.
The doesn’t mean Porsche should have built it, or made it so damn ugly. Actually, it’s the second bit that’s insurportable. And I’m willing to suspend my nausea until I see one in the flesh.
Let’s wait and see.
The only 4-door car that ever really interested me was the previous M5. Other than that, I couldn’t care less. Give me a Ferrari 612…

I am in a position to buy, but no way. Porsche doesn’t live in a parallel world. Nice car, but $100K?? Not these days.
I don’t want to sound like a Porsche apologist (i.e. I’m about to sound like a Porsche apologist) but full-on 911s have been breaking that price point for quite some time.
I’m willing to bet that there will be a LOT of discord in Porsche households. The wife will NOT want to surrender her Cayenne command seating while the husband won’t give up his 911. Three car garage? Not as prevalent as you might imagine, even in this rarified air.
Believe it or don’t, but I bet this will mean a large number of Cayennes will sleep outside. Anyone thinking about buying a 2009 Cayenne in 2011 should keep that in mind. Did I just say that?
Now, conquest sales…
Bentley GT. Tough, tough call. BMW M5. Definitely. That SMG gearbox is effing nasty. Mercedes AMG. For sure. Audi RS4. Yup. Aston Martin Rapide. Different audience. Maserati Quattroporte. Different audience. But they may be fed up by now. Ferrari. Addition.
So, yes, the Panamera will find an audience both within and without Porsche. It was destined to be a hit from day one. But why Lord why is it so ugly?
I disagree that the Quattroporte is aimed at a different audience…that seems pretty much dead-on the Panamera’s demographic. There are a fair number of Quattroportes around here, and the people driving them pretty much represent what I’d expect Porsche sedan buyers to be.

me too. i think most porsches look better in three dimensions than they do in two.
Does anyone care that the Canadians get raped once again on car prices?
I would pay all of the money in the world to purchase and melt every Panamera.
Compared the the 911 range, the prices don’t seem completely ridiculous. I would have liked to seem the prices mirror the Cayenne, with a base Panamera starting at around $65,000. Oh well, I wasn’t planning on buying one soon.
TBH I’d take the Cayenne over this as I’d probably kill myself in this thing because it’s that powerful, and hopefully, easier to drive than a real Porsche.
And I’d most likely have more headroom in the Cayenne.
And quite honestly I don’t think any car-guy’s opinion matters anymore on how nice a car looks. For instance, go to any car enthusiast site and every car guy there hates the Bangle designs. Yet, he’s the most copied designer out there right now. And it’s apparently selling!
So. park this thing in the lot full of BMW’s,Lexii & AMG’s, the ever so dull XF and even a Quattroporte or Aston Martin and you will stand out because the only other Porsche’s in the lot are the dime-a-dozen Cayenne’s. And the importance of that uniqueness has already been stated.
But that uniqueness is not worth another $10,000 to $20,000 combined with a dock in specs.
I wouldn’t be seen dead in one, for any price. But what do I know, I thought the Cayenne would be a huge bomb.
Robert – the buyers of the vehicles you mention with conquest sales are all fashionistas in addition auto enthusiasts. Nobody with a sense of style will be caught dead in this atrocity.
Its a redundancy – you can have your Cayenne (for far less $) which has the identical drivetrains and not have to suffer through the hideous ugliness.
