I’m passionate about microcars. When I have a real job and some money (har har har) I would love to pick up a Berkeley four-wheeler.

Nonsense! The 50cc 1-cylinder engine produces an ample 2.3 horsepower.
I wonder how it’d go [flying apart] with some crazy Honda lawnmower engine fitted, making like 8 horses.
I imagine it’s hard to smoke a pipe and pedal hard enough to keep up with traffic.

I get the willies just looking at this pic. The vehicle? Crap, like all the 3 wheel microcars of the ’50s, but even more so, as the single wheel is in the front. Betcha it handles real good.

It was just a play on words, I know it has an engine. For the modern world, a vespa is a better solution. Driving these little things among our armored personel carrier like compact cars would be nutty. At least the scooters get seen (most of the time).
Still, I think they are cool. I also think that eventually motorcycle classification cars will make a comeback. Just like you say, what if you put use even a 50hp engine and add the weight necessary for more safety? It would seem there are possibilities.

There was this hilarious part from TopGear where Clarkson borrows a microcar, travels through London, and then actually drives down the corridors in the BBC building to visit some colleagues. The mind likes to boggle when it sees such things.
