President Obama concludes his remarks on the auto industry:

“But there is something I want everyone to remember. Remember that it is precisely in times like these—in moments of trial and moments of hardship—that Americans rediscover the ingenuity and resilience that makes us who we are. That made the auto industry what it once was. That sent those first mass-produced cars rolling off assembly lines. That built an arsenal of democracy that propelled America to victory in the Second World War. And that powered our economic prowess in the first American century.

Because I know that if we can tap into that same ingenuity and resilience right now; if we can carry one another through this difficult time and do what must be done; then we will look back and say that this was the moment when America’s auto industry shed its old ways, marched into the future, and remade itself, once more, into an engine of opportunity and prosperity, not only in Detroit, and not only in our Midwest, but all across America.”

Wake up Obama, this ain`t 19th century when any invention consisting of 3 parts made a deal. It also wouldn`t help if you played basketball for free, or invented new rules for it. Every prosperity is built upon development of technology. Who do you think will develop this techonolgy ? A janitor from Kmart who got fired last month, and out of not much to do invented a time machine? This is actually 21st century, where raptors of precise engineering, and velociraptors of industrial agility rule the post-jurassic period. And those who have practised their muscles not on basketball courts but on drawing boards and natural sciences, are most likely to proliferate. Mister Obama, how about at first restructuring education system of techical sciences? What is the hurdle to make PRECISELY FIT products all across America? Jesus Christ, I even can`t tell you how far away you are from the REAL presidential candidates……

I liked the commercial with the dog operating it’s own ball throwing machine, even if I think the Ridgeline is a stunned design. Oh yes, the guys fighting…well, more YouTube fodder I guess.

The gap isn’t as big as it may seem. GM has been called upon to implement revolutionary change to survive and revolutions are rarely bloodless. I dare say this is only the beginning.

I agree with Jurisb. It’s one thing to be an optimist, but it’s a whole other thing to continue with these meaningless vagaries Obama has become reliant upon.

    Wake up indeed.

Details of the GM dealership fights:

It appears that alcohol was a contributing factor.

Substance abuse at a dealership? I’m shocked, shocked I say.

    Gosh.. That’s really sad.

I want to see how the Pres. Obama manages to bring all the conflicts of interests and make GM work.

    1. Environmental Group
    2. Statists Groups
    3. The union and its associative costs
    4. GM, the entity.

The real deal is the Pres. Obama won’t make GM to work. Because GM is at the 4th priority. The current GM’s problem is the makings of 1, 2, and 3. How can he possibly solve GM’s problem. How can anyone really? Maybe, the government can force GM to nullify contract between GM and the union, like they did it with AIG for the statists’ arbitary “greater good’ clause. However, Unions are bigger in numbers than AIG employees.

    GM isn’t solvable without unloading 1, 2, and 3.

Right. I often hear the following when “leaders” get up to speak – “I really didn’t prepare for this situation (though I did fire a guy for his bad attitude when he told me what was about to happen), or even work that hard to come up with a plan for getting us out of it (though we spent a lot of energy covering my ass), but I know that if YOU all really work as hard as you can, then we can get out of this mess.”

It’s the same whether they need a flat, threadbare tire changed without a jack or are trying to save a below sea level, flooded city without anyone who can make a tough decision having been tolerated in their organization.

Johnny Canada: thanks for the link about the details. I clicked on it…it was loading… then I realized it was from Fox News.

Without a second thought I calmly closed that tab and returned to the TTAC thread, not wasting my time on Fox News drivel.

As with the D3, when you’ve consistently worked hard to establish a (bad) reputation and have lost credibility over a long period of time, it is a long uphill battle to gain it back.

    Sometimes you don’t.

So, your saying it didn’t happen because Fox reported it or you hate Fox so much (for whatever reason) you won’t even go there?

By contrast, what would you consider a valid source for a story like this?

Obama is right, the aura of America is that historically it overcame each challenge and usual came out stronger. Can Detroit and by extension America do it again? Odds are not great but there is plenty of precedent for it.

Fox gleefully highlights stories that focus on the downside of the administration’s actions.

A blind man could see it with a cane (thanks Dr. McCoy).
