Think of all the money they could have saved by just importing the 1er hatch. WTF BMW. No niche left unfilled. Hopefully MB and Audi don’t follow (further) down this dark road too.
Cute-utes offer a pretty nice blend of utility and practicality. You get the high seating position of an SUV that so many people want, pretty darn close to the fuel economy of a midsize sedan, and the cargo space of a wagon/hatchback. Granted, road manners are generally less lively than a midsize sedan/wagon/hatchback, but as 90% of the driving public doesn’t care about cornering or oversteer/understeer (just make it quick on the throttle and eliminate any grotesque body roll) you have a model that will roll off the lot.
At my dealership Escapes and Mariners are some of our best sellers. People still love their SUVs, they are just being more practical about the ones they buy. While on average we may sell one Expedition per month, we will average about one Escape or Mariner per day.
I really am shocked at the tack BMW is taking with all these redundant, overlapping vehicles. I think they’re convinced that anything they make will sell, if only for the badge. I’d much rather have a 3-series wagon, or even a 1-series hatchback over this thing.
I FINALLY (in DC of all places) saw an X6 on the road a couple weekends ago, and haven’t seen one since. Does BMW really think that thing is long for this world?
Redundant much?
I’ll openly admit I do not understand many models offered for sale today and how the marketing works (which it does).
Burn the cute-utes!

Looks like some kind of psychedelic hearse!
The turn signals on the side mirrors look like they are off a Mercedes-Benz.
i think Mercedes and more so BMW will destroy themselves in their quest to create and fill as many niches as possible.
i miss the days of BMW when there was just the 3-5-7 series & a convertible. mid-late 90’s BMW was the best BMW
1 series SUV?
DAMN!!!
What for?
Yet another redundant bland Asian cute ute…
Unless we see the badge we won’t have any clue what were looking at.

Thanks for that. Until now, I hadn’t known that BMW was a Japanese company.
Cannibalize wagons much?
