Good job, Mr. Farago. “Quagmire,” indeed! And if Government Motors and Chrysler do succeed in increasing market share, then Ford will become a supplicant.
But I’m sorry the Bachmann piece was yanked. It was flame-baiting only for those who think if they disagree with a person on most things they must disagree on every thing. “Czar” is a word from Imperial Russia. So is “ukase.” The more czars, the more ukases.
I believe the Dr. of Carmageddon here got it right. I wish that there were more time in to present the facts in these interviews, but the point is brought across. Now you need to appear on PBS/NPR to balance out ‘Fox’ness of that interview. Maybe there you would actually get time to talk facts and figures that show you are right as opposed to these short interviews, where you are only expressing an opinion.
First the piece from one of the nuttiest people in Wingnutistania (the yanked Bachmann piece) and now this.
Draw your own conclusions.
In all seriousness, see if you can parlay your perspective (not labeled here) and newfound listing on a few cable teevee news producers’s rolodexes to get on Rachel Maddow. Sure, most of the vocal commentariat here will scream and howl but, she’ll give you time *and* she’ll treat you with respect. Watch her with Pawlenty or Buchanan and you’ll see that while she’s a librul lefty like 3-4 of your readers here, she’s got a knack at talking to people on the opposite side of the aisle in a dialogue rather than a shouting match.
The govt. takeover of GM may or may not be a good idea but I don’t understand how Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Porsche, Lotus, VW, Subaru… can make fuel efficient cars that sell but GM can’t? A lot of people seem to be buying them.
The thing is is that GM, Ford and Chrysler stopped developing cars when they took advantage of emission and safety loopholes to make SUV’s. Whatever you think of SUV’s – it was this short sighted business model that is a major contributor to the shambles we now have to deal with.
I think if the economy was otherwise good they may have let things take their course – and let gm twist in the wind . It was a chance they couldn’t take. But as Monty Python said,” Look on the bright side of life” – compared to the bank bailout and 2 wars it really is short money.
I withdrew the Bachman piece after researching her a bit more (thanks to the B&B). And because I—little old winemaker me—had initiated a flame war.
Again, sadly, these days, politics are inevitable here at The Truth About Cars. But I will not hesitate to use the delete button (even on myself) to keep the discussion as civil and far away from stale left – right politics as possible. Again, as possible.

Robert, I like that someone is giving you screen time. Your insight into the auto industry (specifically GM and Fiat/Chrysler) is one that more people should be paying attention to.
I dislike the interviewer, as unlike Al Jazeera, he talked and put words out there, rather than let you make more points.
He (the interviewer) also made suggestions that are most likely not going to happen, (super high gas tax), with the intent to enrage he audience. This is the typical modus operandi of Fox News/Fox Business.
Robert, I enjoyed your interview on Al Jazeera, and I hope that more US based networks give you that kind of screen time, without making suggestions to push your conversation in another direction.
Have you though about trying to get onto the Daily Show? Jon Stewart has been a great interviewer, and I think that you could get a lot of visibility from that.
Too bad the TTAC website addy was only displayed for about a second. :-(
The hard, frightening conclusion to this interview is that the only thing that can save GM is about a $100 billion more AND much higher gas taxes/prices.
Its the end of the world as we know it. But I don’t feel fine.
Best quote: “…and if my grandmother had wheels, I’d be a trolley car”. Awesome.
The conspiracy theorist in me says that the government really does want to push fuel prices higher (war, anyone?) in order to generate demand for ‘green, fuel-efficient’ cars. It’s called the Strategy of the Manufactured Crisis.
The problem is that GM isn’t the only one wanting to produce such vehicles; in fact, they are rather far behind. So even if fuel prices do skyrocket, consumers will simply purchase from someone else, just as they have in the past.
While I may agree with the bias of the Fox reporter, the Al Jazeera reporter was much more ‘fair and balanced”.
Robert, do you have a doctorate as indicated by the interviewer? If so, I’m very interested in details; due in part to my own struggle in deciding how to proceed in my own life. Where, when, etc. What was your area of study and what was your dissertation?
a gas tax to get Americans to buy small green American cars? Hmmm, doesn’t your interviewer realize there are already makers of those cars that buyers would probably go to before ever strolling into a GM or Chrysler dealership?
Nice job. Too bad it was so short.
There may be a market for small, green, polo bluemotion vehicles, but US Auto is so far away from even matching their competition, esp. when besting them is closer to what they’d have to do, that they might as well be a whore trying to sell Bibles.
John Daly could [ed. put down the Maker’s Mark a sec & then] drive a ball across Niagara Falls and he’d still call USAuto’s chances in the green space a long shot.
3. Please let’s jack that gas tax to $7.00 per gallon now so that we can stop this runaway train and wake up – again – in the country to which you, RF, were born.
4. Of course, jacking the gas tax to $7.00 per gallon and building more efficient cars is not good for revenue building…and this is all about that!
5. I’ll continue to Subaru my way around these New England States, regardless what Gummint Motors offers – product or incentive-wise.
When the anchor is agreeing with you, and even helping you make your point, you know you’ve gotten you point across well. Of course, Fox News isn’t exactly hostile to your point of view.
Now wanting to see you go toe-to-toe with a more hostile interviewer, like Olbermann, Matthews or Maddow.
Ok. I think GM and Chrysler both need an enema, sure. The Board Members appointed by Uncle Sam aren’t necessarily equivalent to government bureaucracy, however. If we get lackluster talent on the board, then I’ll be as pessimistic as you (good lord, I hope not!).
I am a supporter of a gas tax. But you’re right, a gas tax by itself doesn’t confer any unique advantage to GM or Chrysler, so it’s a non-sequitur to argue a gas tax would save domestic car production (with or without Fiat).
We need some dramatic culture change in GM and Chrysler. Dr. Robert says no, emphatically. I say, maybe. I’m not ready to argue it’s a foregone conclusion.
I wish to respectfully second the concept of a Farago-Olberman smackdown followed by a Farago-Matthews smackdown.
We’ll see how long it takes before those guys totally cut-off Robert so as to avoid light being shed on their crummy journalism and total misunderstanding of anything associated with free and competitive markets.
Looking good and nice and professional Doctor Farago.
Can you get your own backdrop made with TTAC.com all over it? Not overwhelming, but enough to make it clear where you are (TTAC World Headquarters). I noticed that financial analysts do this all the time making it look like they are at their corporate office.
Did he end by calling you “Doctor” Robert Farrago? Oohlala, how distinguished. Nice! ;-)
That was great. Now I have a face to put with this website!
Thank god there was no “synergy” of Glen Quagmire giggidy-ingly (oy, shoot me now) sashaying across the screen when you called this a “quagmire”.
Suicide averted.
I still think it would be political suicide for anyone in Washington to even say the words “gas tax.” Nobody has the balls to do it.
Nice work, Doc. :)
Go Robert!!!!

this host a bit more accomodating than your arch nemesis DeLorenzo.
must say you came across as a “sporty chap” there RF.

The “Fair and Balanced” network has to tell you that ‘fact’ when they have an upcoming segment that actually attempts to hear both sides.
Otherwise, the same old slant.
Success is spoiling you, Bob.
You wore a tie this time.
Next stop, Neil Cavuto.
Look!!! It’s our very own TV star!!!
Very nice, RF!!!!!
And ALL true. And no, next stop Lou Dobbs.
You did a great job, Mr Farago!
Too bad the TTAC website addy was only displayed for about a second. :-(

Fox News Flash:
Farago bags more air time than Michael Jordan in 2009!
Any spike in web traffic after this and the Al-Jazeera bit?

btw, nice to see you in a suit this time RF. ;)
Wow, even when you tell them what they hope you’ll say, they argue with you any way. Very weird.
Nice job. Too bad it was so short.

Good interview, Dr. Farago, and a great sense of humor!
Will you be extraordinary?
First the WSJ (Rupert Murdoch) then FOX news (Rupert Murdoch).
What’s next? The Club for Growth?
Good thing they didn’t ask you how much it would have cost the taxpayer to let GM and Chrysler go Chapter 7.
carlos.negros
In your estimation. how much would would it have cost to let GM and Chrysler go Chapter 7?
Ha! How much would it have cost? Denominated in dollars or votes?
1. Great job, RF. Really, very well done!
2. Great “trolley car” line
3. Please let’s jack that gas tax to $7.00 per gallon now so that we can stop this runaway train and wake up – again – in the country to which you, RF, were born.

Good interview, Robert.
You presented your position well, Doc.
Your effectiveness in this dialogue is evidenced by the interviewer backing down to your presentation of facts.

Nice jacket. Hugo Boss?
Kudos Robert, good interview.
Great job Doctor F……
Great grandma line and quick on your feet like you’ve been doing TV interviews for years.
It’s good to finally see the face of TTAC. Keep up the good work.
Again, well done.
@h82w8: Good Point!
-I would pay money to see a fistfight between RF and Keith Olbermann!!!
You sure purdied up good!
/hey doc, I’ve got this rash back here….let me show ya…..
“Doctor Farago “ indeed
PhD in ‘Mixology’ I presume…
Good show, old boy, good show.
What kind of person watches this network for their ‘business’ needs?
The interviewer was essentially goading their guest to convey the network’s message.
Compare and contrast quality with Al-Jazeera. There’s a lesson there about propagated perception vs. reality.
+ it would make great TTAC fodder for youtube!
