Agreed, although as I’ve already stated, I don’t mind the looks of this.
Honda fans are generally a pretty loyal bunch, but Honda is really putting that to the test with monstrosities like this and the ZDX. Is it possible to make vehicles so ugly that even Honda fanatics are turned away from the brand? They are going to find out.
I really don’t understand why Honda has to follow Toyota down this road. They have other very competent CUVs and if they want to sell a wagon in the U.S., why not be a little different and offer a wagon? I’d bet that there are enough people out there that want a midsized wagon to make a business case for it, especially if theirs was the only on available. I can’t see this thing having enough appeal to make it worthwhile. Maybe I’m wrong, but it’s just hideous, and the sloping back cuts its utility quite a bit. The point escapes me.

If I were really in the market for a crossover, I’d sooner pick up a used Aztek. Even one with cladding.

This new Honda is beyond fugly.
Every time I think Honda can’t possibly outdo the Pilot in pure ugliness… they prove me wrong. First it was the new Acura snout, now this monstrosity.
This is hilarious. I saw this in the morning, commented quickly and moved on, thinking it would end there. Then it hit Jalop, Autoblog, and the moving shitstorm that is Digg. I’d say this probably qualifies as a very very bad day for their marketing department.

I couldn’t agree with that more. The funny thing is, it isn’t really a daring move to sell a mid-sized(ish) wagon if your talking about VW, Subaru or Honda…these are the brands that have a screaming audience for that kind of product. Both VW and Subaru have shown that it still works for their customers, even now. I think Honda’s been seduced by the numbers war between the Accord and the Camry, and they think that they’ve left behind the quirky, not-quite-mainstream branding that is the source of their fan’s respect.
The best part is that you can’t comment on the Crosstour until you become a “fan.” Then you can bash it all you want on the official page! Check out the picture section spam too for some laughs.
My 2002 Accord will last a while longer.
I agree with most others this is hideous. I just bought a brand new civic si. It may not the best looking car on the road, but this is ridiculous. The whole front end is a freak show.
Ahhh, Honda, removing reasons for me to not buy domestics with each styling decision.
i actually quite like the Venza having seen them in real life.

You sure about that? The Legacy wagon is dead, and the Outback gained several inches in height so as to appear a lot more crossover-ish and a lot less wagon-ish.
At first, I saw the name Accord Crosstour and got excited. A midsize wagon with sporting intentions, and more reliable than a Saab! Where do I sign up?
Then I saw it was this… Thing. Sure, Azteks and Sebrings may be ugly, but this takes the cake.
I guess it’s back to looking at used 9-5’s.
Uh oh. Just about every website I’ve seen so far has greeted the new Grosstour with nothing but unmitigated scorn. Honestly, a) who was the designer of this bad Picasso on wheels, b) which executive thought it would do and c) where is a car crusher when you need one?
As a Honda devotee, owning fun cars such as the Civic Si, Integra GSR and AP1 S2000, I began noticing Honda’s steady decline ever since they killed the Integra/RSX/Prelude. The new Si’s are nice, but I can’t help but notice all the fun, family and luxury cars coming from Nissan/Infiniti. That’s why I bought an Infiniti G37, which was an easy choice considering its fun factor, (Acura’s botched surgery also had something to do with it). I still have respect for Honda, but my next car purchase may be a 370Z.
The only thing that can help this ugly duckling is a reasonable price and the availability of colors that can mask the styling (the color they’re showing ain’t it).
This is the Nissan Quest of Hondas, I guess.
If this car comes complete with a full set of the black vinyl cladding they use to camouflage them during the prototype testing process, then….MAYBE. It is a Honda, afterall.
I’d just keep the lights turned off in the garage…..

I hear you on that one. I hesitated before including Subaru in the mix there, but I think that on the whole they’ve pulled a mini-Saab by ditching the pure wagon. They sell the Forester and Outback on the strength of the undeniably wagonish previous models and the loyalty those models have created. I don’t know anyone who has a new Forester and is happy with it (I’m sure they exist somewhere, but the 3 owners I know are old Subaru buyers who thought they were getting more of the same and won’t make that mistake again). VW has the Jetta wagon obviously which does quite well.
It’s fugly. And this is from a guy who owns an 09 Pilot. It reminds me of the Kia Rio station wagon from a few years back. Looks like there is less room in it than the sedan, so I don’t see the point.
Who is going to buy this? I read somewhere that car companies are not introducing station wagons in the US, because they would steal sales from the small SUVs. If that’s the case then Honda can pat themselves on the shoulder. CR-V sales are not threatened at all. Not by this car.
But then why build it at all?
I’m sure Honda did a focus group on this – they showed the car to its “literally” blind followers and described the features. They thought it looked great.
I’m normally a supporter of Honda (do more with less ideals) but as of currently – they’ve dropped the ball in styling and technology. Acura really needs to be put out to pasture as it has not grown or evolved and has no clear message besides being a slightly nicer Honda. Now they took most of the lineup and hit them with an ugly stick. Seems the same design gurus are now taking a whack at all Hondas too.
