The way the chrome is connected on the lower left of the rear window makes me think of an older (70s) maybe Mercedes-Benz. 240D, perhaps?

1987 BMW 6 series- I’m looking at mine right now!
I’d guess, based on the chrome & crease it is a W123 chassis Mercedes. That could be anything from a very late 240D or early 300D, or if gasoline powered, a 230 or 280E.

BMW 633/635 CSi. Looks like a BMW symbol on the glass. And it’s the only model that the crease is not indented under (hard to explain).

My dad had a beautiful Graphite Grey 1968 220D with red interior.
I was also thinking Mercedes, but immediate instinct was W124 series S-Class?

I’m going against my initial hunch as the W123… but this is definitely a German car. It’s not a vintage Volvo sedan… they all have a panel gap where the C pillar joints the beltine, and the beltline in the image doesn’t flare out like an old Volvo.
The BMW 6-series is a good guess, but I doubt that the Bimmer has baroque chrome trim surrounding the rear window.
I’ve seen this car before, it’s Mercedes’ W116 type, or a variant thereof. My boss had a ’79 350 SEL that was rebuilt as a 300 Diesel. wgmleslie, MadDutch and YYYYguy are on the right track.

Yep–has to be the BMW. The Volvos and Benzes that had the correct C-pillar and rear window angles would have had some sort of trim along that quarter panel crease. Plus Volvos of that vintage had the ventilation extractors at the bottom of the rear window. I think all three brands used those exact same window moulding clips tho!

Judging by the mint condition, it seems to be a car worth restoring. The 80’s 6-series or rare 70’s MB model could be it then.
I’ll go with rev who said it was an 87 BMW 6 series and he was looking at his when he posted. If you magnify the lower left glass it does appear to be the BMW roundel.

How did the expression “2-door coupe” come into use anyway. A coupe is a 2-door car, period, splat. Probably from the same folks that gave us “vin number”.
Nope, two door coupe vs two door hatchback.
The hatchback is technically not a door… but a hatch. It irritates the hell out of me when people refer to a hatchback as a three door.
But then again, some busy bodies consider a hatch to be a door. If it is, then a trunk on a coupe with a back seat that folds down should then be considered a door as well.

I agree that it’s likely a BMW 6-series coupe or possibly a first-generation 7-series sedan. All Volvos of that type (both 140 and 240 sedans) had air extractor slots beneath the rear window.
