Earlier this year, when sales were down almost across the board, Subaru was usually Hyundai’s only company in the sales-increase club. Subaru didn’t come close to Hyundai’s percentage increase in September, recording only one percent growth, but it’s still up ten percent year-to-date. Impreza tanked by 42 percent after the Clunker crowd binged on Suby’s smallest model last month. Tribeca also stunk it up, falling to 358 units. Otherwise things were all cheddar and gravy (so to speak). Forester, which carried Subaru’s strong showings through most of the year, edged up by one percent. But that was more than offset by a 63 percent boom in sales of the new Outback, which hit 4,268 units. Legacy added 2,762 sales, a 24 percent increase.

They are butt-ugly, but they are solid and drive well. Esp. the turbo (although it is too thirsty)
I doubt they would cost much more if SUBARU went someplace where they know at least a couple things about styling and automotive beauty.
One of my neighbors recently replaced his 2nd-gen Legacy with a new one, and it’s looks are starting to grow on me – it looks way better in person. Not to mention, last year, his significant other replaced her Jeep Liberty with a new Forester, so I see that they have their ducks in a row.
Subaru: “We dare you to ignore the looks of our cars, because otherwise they’re pretty awesome.”
Solid value, honest cars. Better paint than Toyota’s. The new winners are emerging.
Great vehicles. We’ll be getting another Outback, hopefully the 2L diesel model. The new one is growing on me.

The new Legacy/Outback look so much better in person and video than in photographs. I hated the new Legacy initially, but it looks quite good in motion. I’d be on my 3rd subaru had they not killed off the Legacy GT wagon w/ a stick in 2006.

I heard a cop talking openly at a non-cop event with friends and he is stationed in the yuppie county north of mine. He said that they can easily make their quota for DUI’s – just watch for females (single or usually couples) in Subaru station wagons weaving a tad. Bingo. DUI’s. All of them lesbians.
Obviously a lot of other folks are enjoying the virtues of the Subaru. Either that, or the future of the human race is doomed (given the uptick in sales of the Subies).
But why do so many females who sex females adore these things? I have to surmise/wonder if it is something to do with lacking a man to make them feel secure. Perhaps AWD is like Linus’s blanket while driving for them, who knows, I don’t.
It’s the Affordable, reliable AWD.
If you actually drive them, they feel much better, and in addition when you drive them you don’t get to see the gawd-awful exteriors of some of them.
After actually seeing the new outback in person… I question where they went with it… its essentially a Forester now. It actually looks like a reincarnation of the AMC/Eagle wagons.
I know I really like my STi outside of the fuel mileage. I can’t say I’ve ever seen one woman driving an STi although I’m sure they must exist :)
@kaleun : the head gasket problems have been absent since they redesigned the heads in ’03. The 2.5 has been solid since.
I have no clue why Subaru had to make the performance-oriented WRX an ugly little sedan with 4 doors, or even a wagon. Such vehicles should be aerodynamic, elegantg COUPES instead. But Lesbaru would not know elegant or beautiful if it bit it in the ass.
I have had 5 Subaru since 1993. Two of them were 4-cyl models. The first was over 90k when I traded it, the second is now @ 72k. No head gasket problems to report. My last H6 (Outback VDC) had over 142k when I sold her. Not one whiff of an issue with that engine. Totally bulletproof.

Did the problem linger that long? I thought it disappeared in MY2000. AFAIK the head gasket issues were particular to the EJ25D DOHC motor which wasn’t offered after the 1999 model year until again a few years later (2003 maybe?) where the DOHC block had been redesigned for the STI. The 2.5L 4s in the early 2000s were SOHC motors that never had the same issues with the head gaskets.
It’s been a while, but I did research it. I have a 1999 Legacy SUS EJ25D…head gaskets blew nearly three years ago.
