As we were walking home through the Lane Events Center parking lot, where a Tattoo Convention was in high gear, I noticed the 1970 Caddy in the distance, and as soon as I saw the big dubs, I kept walking. They generally just don’t do it for me. But then I thought, what the hell, it might mike a good Outtake. And as I walked around the other side of it and raised my camera, I realized I’d stumbled into another two-fer. With matching dubs, no less.

Not only that, but the Escalade was of the very first generation ones; a veritable Curbside Classic in the making. And my appreciation of the Coupe De Ville was quickly growing, being a relatively tasteful mild custom.

On a coupe that big, huge wheels don’t look completely stupid. This example in particular is a nice car. While any customization, by definition, isn’t for everyone, this car is tasteful and clean. Even the vanity plate doesn’t bother me.

I agree, looks decent, normally can’t stand those kind of wheels. People around here would have jacked that coupe up higher than a 4X4 and put bigger wheels on it.

Seeing these two together reminds me how things have changed, one is a true Cadillac and the other a factory rebadge job.

The wheels look OK on a car this size. It is tastefully done, but something about the two toning on the door looks off to me. Are they following a body line crease, or just trying to make a point?

The “dip” in the line looks off to me too, because there is no dip in the body line crease. Other than that, I think it looks gorgeous.

The Escalade is the most traditional Cadillac the brand currently makes.

Big, bold, powerful, and supremely comfortable in the traditional American way.

I just wish Cadillac made a real car equivalent of that in the lineup as well.

What, you wished they made a rebadged G8 with a tacky nose job?
Sorry, but there’s nothing traditionally Cadillac about the Escalade.
It’s hideous and ludicrous and is perhaps the worst thing they’ve done to damage the brand since the Cimarron.

    Jeez..

    Um wow.

I remember EXACTLY the year that Tahoe for Caddy was built.

They didnt have the new front end — Art and Science b.s. It was literally a rebadge of a Tahoe / Yukon for Caddy. It could easily be confused with the Yukon Denali for GMC.

    Now..
I’m not sure which vehicle I have more dis-taste for. The 70s Caddy.. with the monstrous wheel and tire package.. paired with the awful SILVER and Black paint job.

    Christ..
I think I favor the old Caddy by about 10% more over the Tahoe / Yukon for Caddy. But.. both are hideous and I can see why they are both left out in right field.

    Heck..
Id almost bet MONEY that the same stereotypical driver operates both.. and wouldn’t know the difference if they got into either. (Or the similarly badged vehicle of the makes and model’s time)

Before you slag the first generation Escalade too badly, remember that this is one of those times when GM actually did something right and had it backfire on them. About six months before the Lincoln Navigator came out, GM publicly announced that they had no intention to do any kind of an SUV under the Cadillac label and all Cadillac-level luxury would be sold under the GMC badge. I applauded.

Then the Navigator came out. Within six weeks the Cadillac dealers were screaming bloody murder . . . . . . .

Of course, at that point the next move was obvious, and done on incredibly short notice with absolutely no pre-planning. Not that the Cadillac dealers cared. All they gave a damn about was that they had a Cadillac to put up against the Lincoln.

      SYKE..

This b.s example of an also-ran for GM is another in their blunders of just one re-BADGE of a single vehicle.

      This isn’t a outstanding example.

This isn’t even something they did right.

This is just another example of another short termed FUCKUP G.M perpetuated at the cost of their screaming dealer body.

      When in actuality..
It doesn’t matter.. what is produced, who for GM produces it.. The dealer body will take any mess of crap GM decides to give them. Like a underfed horde of bird children.. staring up squawking at their mother for the next morsel of food. They want anything to sell.

I can go on.. for PAGES of the fuckups they’ve manage to perpetuate just to get the dealers to STFU.

      And that..
Yukon / Tahoe / Denali garbage is just another rotting heap of crap on the G.M pile. The Tahoe / Yukon for Caddy.. is just another attempt at a badge job.. a hole to fill, while the other one is right around the corner.

As for as SILVER.. with the black.. on the DeVille
Ya couldnt find another COLOR to put on this damn thing?

The “street creds” are literally oozing out and piling up around those conveyances.

Paul, you should’ve stuck around and gotten a shot or two of that C De V with the hydraulics running. That always gets people fired up.

I like the Coupe De Ville, except for those reedonkulous wheels. Silver and black looks fine to me.

I like big Caddies with 20s of that generation and the one before (24 or more is just freaking wagon wheels)and they’re especially nice if they have an airbag suspension to raise and lower the ride height without the inane hydraulic dancing.

Oh jeez, that Coupe De Ville is gorgeous. That is a timeless American car, especially so because Cadillac was able to work the tailfins into designs long after the trend was new and fresh.

I’m usually more into restored/maintained classics than customs like this, but in the case of the ’70 Caddy, this one is a definite keeper. Very well done.

This car looks beautifully done, and judging from the number that I still see on the road, the ’70 design has well withstood the test of time. I have one of these. Those dubs on a stock suspension will loosen fillings on anything less than a smooth surface. I sure hope that the suspension has been bagged or otherwise massaged.

Typical Caddy driver’s parking job in that picture, as well. Lines? What lines?

So, uh…. which one of ’em weighs more?

A real car made in USA with quality parts although I don’t get why anyone would spoil the ride with those cartoon wheels. Last night I drove behind a 1969 lincoln Mark III which looks so good on the road in contrast to today’s appliance cars. The Escalade however is basically a junkpile of Chinese and Mexican parts. My boss has an ’07 Escalade which is on it’s 3rd tranny, 2nd engine, 2nd steering rack and the “check engine” light has been on for 2 years. The GM dealership’s service department makes the Three Stooges look like Carol Shelby and crew.

I think this is my old Caddy. Anyone know how to track it down. My dad got it for me at 16 and i kept it 18 years and then regretably sold it. I’d love to buy it back some day. That car’s like a piece of me!
