We (you?) had so much fun with the Ultra Van’s undersides, we’re going to do it again. I’m sorry nobody guessed the Silversides bus, but I’m guessing someone is going to recognize this.

A Massey Ferguson tractor? Who would have inboard drum brakes?
a rope-drive 63 Pontiac Tempest.
Ohhh, good one.
That looks like a torque converter in front of the transaxle.
Bingo!
Unimog?
Or a Pinzgauer.
Lancia Aurelia
1961 Tempest “Rope Drive” (unless someone’s been driving the original show car from 1954)
I have no idea except that the “thing” to the right doesn’t look like a torque converter, the groddy thing in the middle looks like a rear diff of some sort that’s leaking or has leaked, the drive shaft heading up front, based on the U-Joints I see.
That said, I have NO clue. :-)
That is what it all looks like to me but I could be so totally wrong. Can’t be FWD due to the U-joints as most FWD cars use CV joints instead and they are encased in rubber boots to keep the dirt out, that much I DO know.
EDIT: Thinking on it, it may WELL be the front section perhaps of an AWD or 4WD setup of some sort.
Alfetta
Corvair?
Definitely a rope-drive Tempest.
Yup!

Uh oh, you’re going to get in trouble with Paul. You’re not supposed to post links. It ruins the fun…
Juniper, see me after class!
DAF Variomatic transmission looking toward the back of the car?
Swing axles always amazed me – anyone who’s used a “u-joint” adapter on a socket wrench knows how “lumpy” the torque delivery gets off-angle. Also, the torque path in that tranny is very convoluted — along with the “rope” driveshaft, I wonder if there was a noticeable “lag” in power delivery(?)
Wow, a Pontiac Tempest. That trans axle looks like it came out of an early model Corvair.
Yeah, Corvair or rope drive Tempest.
Oops my bad.
But hey, you have editors to edit.
Not quite like you might think. Nobody is going to be keeping an eye out for this type of infraction except me. And it was getting a bit late last night. I’ll let you off with a warning this time :)
Definitely NOT a Corvair. I spent way too many hours under them to know it’s not a ‘Vair, early, late or ’66 6-bolt Saginaw tranaxle.
But I’m stumped too.
