Here’s a totally practical daily driver I spotted on the south side of Denver a while back.
My sources tell me that this Svenmeister Hardcore Kustoms creation, which appears to be a ’49 Ford pickup, was driven to the salt flats and back immediately after completion. Must have been a rough ride, but who cares?
The only disappointment about this fine machine is the small-block Chevy, though the cop-enragin’ straight pipes compensate somewhat. If ever a truck needed a Lincoln 462, this is it!

Man, a REAL hotrod – not one of those fiberglass, automatic-transmissioned abortions that proliferate at the Friday night cruise-ins anymore. With REAL hotrod wheels: steel with baby moons.
I’ll disagree on the engine. What that truck really needs is a Ford flathead V-8. Or, at most, an Oldsmobile Rocket. Keep it completely early 50’s.
+100 on the Flathead. Add an Edelbrock or Offenhauser intake for three 3-bolt single barrel Stromberg 97s, and we are really talkin’ da bomb!!!!!!!! Or add the Canadian Mercury 6050 aluminum heads to raise the CR to 7.5 ….. or maybe go to the aftermarket for a pair of Offenhauser or Edelbrock heads. Don’t forget the Iskenderian cam!!!!!!
This could be way too much fun.

+1 on the Flathead. I once had the privilege of hearing one started up for the first time in decades after being pulled out of a wrecked old Ford truck. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Twas a bit like this.
All V8s sound wonderful to my ears guys and V6s too with the right mufflers. I’m the sort of guy who can tell the muffler is starting to rust out on my old F150 cause the 4.6V8 sounds just a little throatier (which isn’t exactly an incentive for me to fix it till it gets obnoxious.) Of course the replacement will be “cat back dual exhausts.”
BTW shouldn’t it be the law in America that V8 power vehicles be factory equipped with dual exhausts? At least from the catalytic converter back.
@Syke: you sure this one doesn’t have a girlie transmission? Those look like cooler lines at the bottom of the radiator.

It’s actually a ’63 Dodge Polara, and yes it’s mine. I’ve got an earlier comment still hung up in “awaiting moderation” because it has some links to photos and videos of my ride. Hopefully they will be “approved” soon!!!!!

I, too, am missing PN’s Curbside Classics. These finds of Murilee’s are fun, and I wouldn’t want to lose them, but Paul’s are a different thing, and one of my favorite aspects of this site.

Overall I like the look. If it was mine, I would shorten the box and power it with either a 50’s Hemi, a Buick nailhead, a big Caddy mill, or maybe a Chrysler 413 with Golden Lion badging.
I saw something very simular (or the same?) in Seymour Indiana last week on the corner of E 9th and N. Ewing St
Mmm, green; nice to see that color on something besides a new Subaru.
With no other visual cues for it, I’m guessing the hole in the bed is for fuel cell access.

I’ve seen a couple of similar rigs around here, but with older cabs and much smaller pickup boxes. And add my +1 on the flathead too.
Give me a blown 392 Hemi (the original) and you can call it sold!

Too bad it was left out in the elements and the engine was allowed to rust. Those headers look to be hand bent and one of a kind.
I’m not digging the way the bed was done but then again I’m not an open wheel enthusiast.
+1 on a period motor, Rocket 88, Flathead or 392 Hemi in that order.
The rust is intentional and a big part of the ratrod aesthetic.

If that’s on a Denver city street it must be trapped on the block; it would high-side on the run-off gutters at every intersection.
