A mild case of pedal misapplication left five cars in pieces. An 86 year old woman from Cologne, Germany, vacated her parking spot. She confused gas and brake and smashed into a few cars behind her. Totally shocked, she wanted to extract herself from the scene. She did put her car in gear, mashed the gas, and slammed into a car in front of her, which ended up against a wall. Another driver was waiting for the bigger and bigger parking spot to be come available. The octogenarian slammed into that car as well. After five cars including her own were demolished, an ambulance drove the lady to a hospital.
Auto Bild withheld the makes of the cars.

Sounds like an old (literally old) boss I briefly had who ignored a high water warning and got her car stuck. A local TV station recorded her on camera refreshing her lipstick before getting rescued through the sunroof.
This reminds me of the South Park episode “Grey Dawn.” Stan says something along the lines of “I think old people should have rights; I just don’t want to die.”
That episode was great. But also, that quote is spot on.

What’s to be done in a democratic republic? A NY State trooper was recent bug splatted on the roadside during a pullover outside of Buffalo. No charges – elderly driver “didn’t see” the cop. Alas, German Seniors reliably vote too, so there’s obvious political pressure to keep “experienced” drivers on the road. But what is the current “German” solution to this problem?
Yet if that was done by an inexpierenced teenage driver, that kid would be facing 1st degree murder charges. The expierenced driver should face the same thing. Except instead of going to jail, the plea bargin should take away driving priveledges. And once convicted of a felony, their voting rights are gone too! Kill two birds with one stone.
But really, make people take a driving test every other renewal. That will take people off the road, regardless of age. That will stop the discrimination lawsuits over such a law.

Not Eden-like but there ARE many aspects of Japanese culture I admire while my disgust for what the USA is becoming grows daily.
Five cars tells me that this was likely a road rage problem, not some confused senior. Yes Jimmy, Grandma gets mad sometimes too.

When I was a kid in the late 70s I SAW one of these incidents happen in Lewiston Maine. I can remember it clear as day – little old lady in some HUGE late 60s/early 70s barge trying to parallel park on the main street. She though she had her foot on the brake but of course it was on the gas. That V8 beast took off with tire smoke just ROLLING off the back wheels. She nailed about 10 cars on both sides of the road (one-way street with parking on both sides) before she finally got into one hard enough to stop her. Poor old dear just sat there with the throttle buried until folks rushed up and got her out of the car. I can still hear it WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! And tires just smoking. Amazing she didn’t hit any pedestrians.
This doesn’t just happen to old folks though, my Mom managed to put my Stepfather’s brand new ’77 Grand Prix through the back wall of the garage…. She was probably 28 at the time.
A buddy of mine put his new shiny new (to him) 20th anniversary GTI through his fiancée’s parents’ garage door. Talk about making an impression!
I think I watched her do the exact same thing today in Doylestown PA…took off up the street without the front end of her volvo hehe

It’s probably a simple case of panic. People can do very strange things in a state of panic.
So I’m curious now as to which age group has the fewest accidents (proportionately)? 40-50?
Any stats for 60-year-old farts like me? Hmmm…

As a wild guess I opt for the 1-5 year old demographic.

Yeah, I am a smart a$$ but, I suppose, that’s better then being a dumb a$$.
Actually, I’d be willing to bet that a 5 year old has driven a car or truck somewhere or other (put the car in gear while the parents weren’t watching, or some other such thing), so I’d bet the rate of accidents for that age group is probably very high proportionate to the number of drivers (and remember, I did say “proportionately”).
It is fun to take shots at old people and women…if you are a youngish guy. At the same time, it could be considered ageist and sexist if not downright pig-ignorant.
Maybe we wouldn’t take so many shots if they could drive without hitting us.

So, how many times have you actually been hit by an elderly lady?
I’m not going to pick on women drivers. But it is a fact that the older a person gets, the more diminished their physical and mental skills get. That right there should make you leary of people in their 80’s driving next to you. Like I have already mentioned, make everyone take a driving test every other license renewal. Get all the bad drivers off the road, regardless of age. Although, I would expect that the majority of of 80 year olds would be removed from the roads if the law was applied without bias.
