Just days after the 2015 Hyundai Genesis was spied in the flesh, these renderings were revealed. The car will get its official debut at NAIAS in January, 2014. Unlike the last generation, the new Genesis will have AWD.

Fancy Lexus LLL-style brake lights.
Nice side profile of a GS.
And a special grey area at the front where the Mercedes logo should have gone.
Fail^3
When I saw the grille, I thought: Studebaker Hawk. It may not be possible for a car to NOT have some design cues that resemble others. The “four door coupe” may have reached the same point as the three box concept: all the defining details have been done before. Maybe it’s time to take another look at the AMC Pacer?
What’s fail is that the rear light pattern is little like what’s on Lexus, which on the LS460, is just the same as the one on the 5/7 Series but flipped over.
The side profile/greenhouse is more Infiniti M, A7, Fusion, etc. than the GS, which has a side/profile GS that’s much straighter up traditional BMW with a more upright Hofmeister kink (and btw, the rear/taillights of the GS can be confused with the rear/taillights of the Sonata).
And the Lexus grill (before they went all “predator”) was more Mercedes-like (just needed a center divider) in shape and there’s a reason why Lexus has been the only brand to be called out by Mercedes for copying (particularly the LS430).
I like it.
My favorite rental in Naples is the current edition. I flogged it and got 24 mpg. I babied the GMarguis and got 18.
That is a beautiful MY 2015 Mazda 929. When will it hit dealerships?

You know, I still think that was a good looking formal Japanese saloon.
+1
Ya’ know, we have come to expect automakers and their stylists to “borrow” design elements from each other, but it looks as if a Hyundai employee literally stole the front end of a Mazda 6 in this case.
Over due for your new glasses prescription?
Front fascia/grille doesn’t look anything like the Mazda/KODO design, except in its monolithic singularity… ‘of a piece’.

Nahhh….
The image of the Six, makes my point.
As somebody already mentioned here, the Genesis rendering’s grille, does look like a Studee Hawk grille, several of which I have hanging on the shop walls along side early 2nd gen Camaro RS grilles and others.
Regards.
The Genesis’ grill shape is more of a hexagonal design (which Hyundai originated nearly a decade ago) while the Mazda grill shape is a pentagon and shared by Acura (even after they added the “beak”).
Anyway, the renderings look a little better but overall, the design is still too bland.
A lot nicer than the current car, but they should have gotten their cousins over at KIA to do the design. The new Impala looks better, sadly wrong-wheel-drive though.
Definitely more stylish than the current generation. The side looks very 5series like (especially the door handles embedded in the side crease.)
I have said it elsewhere, but I think Peter Schreyer is a modern-sedan-designing genius. It is not easy to make cars look this good with all the current safety regs and aerodynamic/packaging constraints.
It will be interesting to see how Audi fares without him.
Schreyer has not worked on any Audi since the original TT, which debuted in 1999. It appears that the company is managing to keep its head above water without him.
Ah – fair enough.
You know who really needs him?….Acura.
They’ve been photocopying his old designs since then. copy of a copy of a copy
Audi knockoff…bleh..its as original a design as the kia amanti..koreans dont get style.
They do, it’s just other people’s.
I like it. I’d even go as far as to put it on my short list.
Audi A7 knock-off.
Nuff said.
Well they had to do something, especially since the Accord basically stole the entire current Genesis’s design. From 100 yards, I can hardly tell them apart from behind.
I also agree it’s Audi-esque, but VAG are probably the most knocked-off car designers of the past 20 years.
I like it.
When someone in my apartment complex parked their new Accord near me my first thought was wow, why would you still live here if you have money for even a Genesis? Once I got closer I laughed at the Japanese copying the Koreans. Oh how those two have traded.
If you’re going to accuse Honda of copying the Genesis (OK, let’s say they did), you have to accept the uncanny resemblance of both cars to the previous Lexus LS.

Nice looking, but clearly borrows a lot of cues from Audi: the nose and the nice sloping rear/C-pillar in particular.
The oversized grill maybe (tho arguably, Chrysler was the one who brought it back to non-ultralux sedans), but Audi has since copied Hyundai’s hexagonal grill shape on some of their models (esp. the newer ones).
The nose with the protruding snout and set back hoodline is something that everyone is doing these days due to Euro pedestrian safety standards and was 1st started by Maserati (Quattroporte) and followed by BMW, Volvo, Audi, Mercedes, VW, the Japanese, etc.
The sloping rear/C-pillar isn’t anything specific to Audi since Chevy (Impala), Ford (Fusion), Infiniti (previous M), Toyota (Avalon), Jaguar (XJ), etc. – all have a sloping roofline (and besides, Audi didn’t originate the fastback).
Hope the next Sonata is a smaller version of this.
There sure is a lot of hand wringing going on about this car. Does it look good? Well, to me it does and I really don’t care where they got (pilfered) their inspiration. Roguish Hyundai/Kia designers don’t bother me one bit. If you need money you rob a bank, not a liquor store, so I’m kinda glad they didn’t model themselves after Toyota or Acura.
But that’s just me.
Totally agree. I think such people have a bias (that favors the European) anyway. The MB E class headlights are a shameless copy from the previous Lexus G. How many would acknowledge that?
Just to add. If there is substantial copying, the victim’s lawyers should work harder having the offender convicted. We know the big guys have huge legal budgets. So, if there is no conviction, there is no stealing, for me.
Please re-evaluate your understanding of the legal system and trademarking, and how they work within business.
You might want to re-evaluate your understanding of art and design and how there’s not much “genuine” design out there.
Some “borrow” lightly others are a bit more heavy handed but you’re fooling yourself if you think most things just magically pop into a designers head.
But its not just art. It happens in industrial settings too. I love the way the United States is able to project power through our Navy, particularly our aircraft carriers.
Thing is, many of the innovations that have made our carrier program so successful we’re originated by the Royal Navy. Innovations such as the angled flight deck, steam catapult, and optical landing systems.
I wouldn’t call the U.S. carrier fleet a fail because it cribbed those technologies. I’d call that smart but then again that’s just me.
Bottom line–When something works you use it regardless of where it was developed.
Not my cup of tea, but I’l *really* happy to see some design competition out there in from the Asian continent.
The pressure from cars like this will keep my preferred car company worried and moving their designs forward.
This is just Hyundai doing what it does best, stealing styling elements from other cars and adding them to their own.
Hmm, not bad. A lot of folks guessing Audi, but the first thing I thought was 2013 Fusion. Not necessarily a bad thing…
its a pastiche
but saying that there’s a limit to how daring 4 door luxury saloons can be
i see a lot of jaguar mazda 6 audi sportbacks etc.
but i do like what i see
with a small v8 and a zf 8 speed i can see great things
Its too risky to be unique… stolen or not (well yes, it’s very stolen from several makes), the car does look quite attractive.
The new model looks great to me, but I’ll hang on to my current Genesis V-8 for at least a year or two more. Of the dozens of cars I have owned in over 60 years of driving, my 2009 Genesis is my best car ever on balance. That list includes Mercedes, Audi, Accura, BMW, Buick, and a lot more makes.
