In advance of its debut, these pictures from a Chinese website purport to show the Chevrolet Cruze, sans camouflage.
The updated Cruze, which may see a debut as early as the New York Auto Show, gets an updated nose that aligns closer with Chevrolet’s new corporate styling, along with a revamped interior. Power should come from GM’s new modular engine family.
It looks like a focus. Even the grill has the new Ford Faux Aston look going on.
My thoughts exactly. If there was a blue oval in place of the bowtie, I’d have pegged this car for some sort of Chinese Focus variant.
More like the headlights from the Accent and the lower, oversized hexagonal shaped grill from the Sonata hybrid (which the Avalon also used).
Anyway, while maybe a bit generic (as auto design goes nowadays) – think it looks decent enough (the front end looks better than the pre-refresh Focus) and probably looks better in another color than white (as well in a more upmarket trim).
On first glance, I thought it was an Avalon.

It does look like the current Focus sedan.
As long as will still have a Chinese crate motor & 35% Chinese content, 40% Mexican sourced components, 20% Korean content & 5% U.S. content, people can buy this & feel patriotic on their road trip to see the USA in their Chevrolet, because at least it was slapped together in Ohio or Michigan.

That was my first thought. That hybrid is the ugliest car in North America and we were all spared from frequent exposure by its poor sales. If this is the new Cruze, there will be no escaping it.
An upside down Focus grille, even more so when considering the electric Focus.
Thank god they got rid of the awful black plastic triangle on the c/d pillar.
Another generic gaping mouth, looks like a Dart and or Focus. Damn shame, I thought the Cruze was easily the most handsome compact on the market.
“Handsome” is a good adjective for the current Cruze. Understated as it is, it kind of stands out in this era of character lines and “aggressive” front ends. Like, say, the B5 Passat, it’s a design that will still look clean and conservative in 10 years’ time.
I’ve quite liked the three Cruzes I’ve had as rental cars in the past two years, and I hope the General doesn’t screw up the recipe.
The current Cruze is handsome, but I’ve always thought that the front end is the weakest part of the whole car.
I find it striking, and easily the best part of the car styling, especially contrasted to the rear side window DLO fail and the noticeable difference in the shape of rear lighting from front.
I’ve always found the current Cruze to be fairly attractive. A cut above other compacts. Opel/BMW/Audi like understated teutonic handsomeness. This new one seems like a refreshed Korean Daewoo.

Indeed, it seems that as grille area grows, intakes shrink. You can bet that 7/8 of that grille-area is blocked off. We’re getting close to having a repeat of that DaimlerChrysler car—whose name I can’t recall—that had an entirely painted-on grille instead of a real one.

’95-96 Sebring coupe, I think. Had a Mercedes look to the styling, but it was a Diamond-Star car.
Of course, you may be thinking of another car entirely, but that feature always struck me as odd about the car. The Volt is the only other car that jumps to mind in this respect, but obviously it has an excuse.
HORRIBLE. I was just scrolling through TTAC, and there is a pic of a red current-model Cruze just a few posts above this one. It made me again remark at what a good-looking design it is. And then I get to this post. What is GM thinking? First the Malibu and now the Cruze.
Sigh.
It looks like the Dart now at the front, and that huge grille is gonna look mighty stupid with a plate on the front, for states which so require. Also, it annoys me that the gold bow tie is absolutely not centered in the grille. There’s no black space above, and there is some below.
I see Dodge Dart. I agree with the others, the current Cruze looks far better. This look is beyond generic.

Completely looks like a rebadged 2015 Sonata….in all ways. It’s like they decided to platform share or something.

GM styling has run out of ‘unique’ and replaced it with a large helping of ‘me too’.
It seems all marques are using the same designer. Maybe we can just order by size someday: Ford 1,2,or 3. Completely interchangeable with Chevrolet/Toyota/any beigemobile 1,2 or 3.
We can only hope that this is a China only version. This design looks so bad that even the Chevy bowtie doesn’t seem to fit properly.

Seeing how the Cruz sells better than Darts and Sonatas I fail to see why GMs aping them, it hardly fits their new styling.

Wow…you *are* something. The fact that a car shares the same platform with another car (as the Cruze does with the Volt) does not mean that the cars are the same, or that they evolved from one another.

I haven’t seen stats on the Sonata vs the Cruz, but I see so many Cruz’s that its hard to ignore that they sell quite well, I don’t understand why but people do like them.
@Ryoku75 … Have you driven a Cruze? I’ve owned 3 Civics and I’m sold on the Cruze. I can understand your reservations. I think every Cavalier and Cobalt should have been crushed right after it came off the assembly line. The Cruze is a totally different animal.

I see a lot of whining and complaining here “It’s a focus, wahhh”. LOOK AT THE INTERIOR. Just take a good long look at it and think of the interiors Chevy was putting into the Cavalier LESS THAN A DECADE AGO.

True, the interior looks very nice, but it’s a shame they can’t make the exterior styling more distinctive.
The interior does look very nice – but exterior-wise, really not that surprising as more and more cars look the same.
Hey… I like my Cavalier Interior. The cracks in the dash give it character.

I looked at one of those Cavaliers recently for a relative, I can’t believe that the automatic marks were just painted on the side (and smeared from age).

If having a generic exterior is this car’s biggest problem, it’s a success. It’s not like you sit on the exterior.

Well they finally managed to get the interior right. Good for them. Took about 20 years to put a decent interior into an otherwhise bland and derivative car. Catching up to the Japanese no doubt. Except the axles still break…
Perhaps in another 20 years, with 1 or more bankruptcies, they can get the axles and ignition FINALLY right? Then they’ll finally catch up to my 2000 Civic SI…
I’m just happy that GM now has a compact nameplate with some equity in it, so that they can keep the “Cruze” moniker instead of changing it. Cavalier…Corsica…Cobalt…they were running out of “C” names. Too, this one appears to bring Impala levels of luxury to the compact class (but hopefully without the Impala’s chintzy imitation woodgrain).
What I’d like to know is whether this car is going to be on the upcoming modular platform, or whether it will stick with the Delta II structure that underpins GM’s current compacts…
But based on what I’ve read, this model is China-only, and even uses its own unique wheelbase.
Kind of hard to have any equity at all in ones products when almost all of one’s entire product line up is in one state of recall or another. With at least another million or so down the pike about to make the news as well before its all said and done
Equity demands Credibility ; Massive recalls as well as five years or more of lying about it negates any and all aspects of credibility .
Age , Wisdom , Success and a bit of money in ones back pocket teaches you that little gem of wisdom . Best to learn it yourself while young . It’ll save you a bundle in the long run

Perhaps the recalls—including the axle issue that resulted in a stop-sale for all Cruzes with the 1.4-liter turbo—took away some of GM’s credibility, but not the equity in the Cruze name. It honestly doesn’t appear that people are as scared of recalled vehicles as news outlets would like you to believe they are. I’ll bet the people that want to buy 1.4-liter Cruzes and can’t right now aren’t thinking, “Gee, I should pick something else since this isn’t safe.” I bet they’re thinking, “Well when will I be able to buy it again?” Moreover, the recalls seem to be doing more damage to people’s opinion of GM as a whole than of individual models, and this is mostly with people who didn’t like GM in the first place…such as yourself.
Think about it: Telling someone that you drive a Cobalt or a Cavalier will probably elicit a grimace. A Cruze? Not so much. People buy unsafe, unreliable vehicles all the time, but sturdy or not, GM’s compact nameplate no longer refers to a *cheap* car…and that’s the important thing.
You know what is chintzy and cheesy is the horrible gold boytie that afflicts all Chevys. Are they ever going to dump the gold?

That *is* a sore-spot for me as well, and I’m a fan of GM. Fortunately, they have colored vinyl stickers that you can put over all of the bow-tie emblems, and they’re hardly noticeable…

That’s true. I honestly think that the 3 would sell better if it wasn’t the smallest car in the class in terms of usable interior volume, and if it wasn’t ridiculously overpriced.

I’ll disagree somewhat with this. The Mazda 3 is great to drive, but I don’t think it’s all that distinctive to look at. Meanwhile, there are good examples of stylish compacts that are very solid sellers – the Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra come to mind. Neither will end up next to the Cistalia at the MOMA, but they both have unique and expressive styling.
I think there is room in this segment for a great-looking car, and GM has no shortage of good stylists, so I find this Cruze disappointing (assuming, of course, it’s going somewhere else than China).
Yes, this screams baby Optima to me too.

So the Cruze looks like every other car in the segment available in North America (if you read above you see it looks like a Dodge, no a Ford, no a Hyundai, no a Kia, no a Honda, no a…)

It’s like the late 80’s-early 90’s where every car was a generic box. Though in Chevy’s case the Nova/Prizim didn’t just look like a Corolla it actually was a corolla.
…or the mid-size sedans from Detroit in the 1970s – Fury/Monaco, Impala, LTD, etc.
The 2nd Gen Volt will also be based on the Cruze. The platform was designed with that in mind I’ve read. The next Volt is supposed to be launched in 2015 as a 2016 model.
Well, it’s not that the Volt is or ever was based on the Cruze. The cars share their basic Delta II platform for cost reasons, but the Volt had to be engineered as its own vehicle from there, especially with all of the features GM had to employ to eke fuel-efficiency from it. The Volt and Cruze are merely structural sisters in the same way that the Cruze and Verano are.

Disagree. The Cruze and the Verano are very similar. The Cruze and the Volt are extremely different. The Volt is built around a battery in the centre tunnel.
They modified an existing platform, the same one as the current Cruze, to build the Volt. It would have been optimal to engineer the Volt from the ground up, but time and money didn’t allow that. The Volt is a great car but there is a lot of low hanging fruit that can he plucked to make the 2nd Gen better. Some of that low hanging fruit is due to the constraints of using an existing paltform. The platform for the new Cruze was supposedly designed with the 2nd Gen Volt in mind.
I didn’t know GM and Chrysler were partnering together.
Maybe it’s like the ignition switches; they know they’re together, but they won’t tell anyone they are for another decade.
The new Cruze looks really boring. I prefer the way the current one looks- it may not be the most exciting design in the world, but it has good proportions.

Pedestrian impact regulations determine the front end proportions, contours, and materials. Efficiency standards mandate maximum aerodynamic efficiency. Designers are left with a standardized box. All they can do is color on it with different crayons.
